A certificate of appreciation is a customizable way to recognize someone’s contribution, service, or creative work. For a painting project, it can thank an artist, volunteer, student, crew member, or community contributor for a specific effort. Choose an editable template, make the recognition personal, proofread it, then print or share it digitally. If the certificate represents an organization, use that organization’s branding and production instructions.
What to write on a certificate of appreciation
Make the wording specific enough that the recipient can see what their contribution meant. There is no single required formula: the right details depend on who is issuing the certificate and what is being recognized.
- Recipient: use the person’s or group’s preferred name.
- Recognition: state that the certificate is presented in appreciation or recognition.
- Contribution: name the service, project, or quality being acknowledged.
- Issuer and date: identify the organization or person presenting it and add a date if appropriate.
- Optional sign-off: include a signature, title, logo, or other identifying detail when the issuer’s format calls for it.
For example: “Presented to [Name] in appreciation of your thoughtful work on [project or contribution]. Your care and creativity helped make this project possible. Presented by [Organization] on [Date].” Treat this as a starting point, not required wording; adapt it to the recipient and the issuer’s style.

How to make one
- Decide what you are recognizing. Identify the recipient and the particular contribution or service, such as helping complete a mural, supporting an art workshop, or contributing to a community painting project.
- Choose an editable template. Microsoft and Canva describe customizable certificate-template workflows. Select a design that suits the occasion and, for organizational use, follows the issuer’s branding.
- Personalize the text and design. Add the recognition wording and any required issuer details. Check names, dates, logos, and signature information against the organization’s instructions; these are useful checks, not universal legal requirements.
- Proofread the finished layout. Adelphi University’s template guidance specifically tells users to proofread a customized Word template before printing. Check spelling, alignment, and whether the text fits its space.
- Choose how to deliver it. Print a presentation copy, share a digital file, or do both if that suits the occasion.

Neither route is universally better. The choice depends on whether a physical presentation, a shareable file, or both will serve the recipient best.

Do not assume every certificate template uses the same paper size or printer settings. The University at Buffalo offers editable horizontal and vertical templates designed for standard 8.5 × 11 inch paper. Check the actual template’s dimensions and orientation, then confirm printer compatibility before using certificate stock.

For an institutional certificate, the issuer’s instructions take priority over general advice. Adelphi University’s guidance, for example, describes ordering its official certificate paper, using the Word template corresponding to the selected paper, and printing with a department color inkjet or laser printer. That is an example of an organization-specific workflow, not a general requirement to buy special paper or use a particular printer.
