Chaitra Navratri is a nine-day spring observance honoring Goddess Durga and her forms. It begins on the first day of Chaitra in the Hindu lunisolar calendar, so its Gregorian dates change each year and panchang timings depend on location. In 2026, it was observed from 19 to 27 March, concluding with Ram Navami.

What is Chaitra Navratri?
Also called Vasanta Navratri, Chaitra Navratri is a nine-day festival dedicated to Goddess Durga and her nine forms, collectively known as Navdurga. It falls in the spring month of Chaitra in the Hindu lunisolar calendar. Drik Panchang’s calendar page describes its calendar position and connection with Ram Navami.
The festival’s date on the Gregorian calendar is not fixed. The month’s beginning and local panchang calculations determine when the observance starts, so a date or auspicious time for one location should not automatically be applied elsewhere.

When is Chaitra Navratri?
In 2026, Chaitra Navratri began on 19 March and concluded with Ram Navami on 27 March. News On AIR’s report of 19 March 2026 said the festival had begun that day and would conclude with Ram Navami. These are the dates for the 2026 observance, not dates that apply every year.
To find dates and ritual timings for another year, check a calendar or panchang set for your location. The cited Drik Panchang calendar, for example, is specifically presented for Sehore, Madhya Pradesh.

How does Ram Navami relate to Chaitra Navratri?
Ram Navami usually falls on the ninth day of Chaitra Navratri, and in 2026 it marked the observance’s conclusion, according to News On AIR. The festival and the concluding day are therefore closely connected in the calendar, although local calendars determine the applicable date and timing.
How is Chaitra Navratri observed?
Practices vary by household, community and region; fasting is not an obligation followed by everyone. News On AIR reported devotees observing fasts and eating satvik food, as well as offering prayers, singing bhajans and performing daily aarti. It also reported morning aarti at temples, including in New Delhi.

For someone observing at home, the source-reported practices offer a general picture rather than a required checklist. Follow the customs of your family or community, and consult a local panchang for time-sensitive observances.
What is Ghatasthapana, and what might be prepared?
Ghatasthapana is a puja associated with the start of Navratri. The Maharashtra Tourism guide to Ghatasthapana describes an earthen pot or urn and materials that may include barley, soil, water, rice, leaves, coconut, flowers and fruit, along with other ritual items.

That list is practical reference material, not a universal prescription: requirements differ by tradition and household. If you are preparing supplies, confirm the items and local timing with your family or community practice. A Ghatasthapana puja kalash may be one item to look for, but the cited guidance does not establish that any particular kit or bundle is necessary.

Calendar associations and celebrations differ across India. Drik Panchang connects the beginning of Chaitra Navratri with Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh. This describes associations noted by that source; it does not mean every community observes the same New Year or follows identical rites.

Regional examples often mentioned in general descriptions of Navratri also need context. The Incredible India overview discusses garba in Gujarat, Durga Puja in eastern India, Ramlila in northern India and kolu displays in southern India, but chiefly frames the autumn celebration. Those examples should not be treated as a universal list of Chaitra Navratri customs.
Is Chaitra Navratri the same as autumn Navratri?
Both are Navratri observances, but Chaitra Navratri takes place in the spring month of Chaitra. The cited Incredible India overview chiefly describes the autumn celebration and its regional expressions; it does not establish a comprehensive, shared set of rituals for the two observances. When comparing customs, identify which Navratri and which region a description refers to.
