Yes, ChatGPT image generation is available on the Free plan, including creating images and editing existing ones. Image generation has a separate usage limit, and OpenAI does not publish one universal free image count or reset interval. If you reach your limit, ChatGPT notifies you and you must wait until later to use the tool again.
What can you do with ChatGPT Images?
OpenAI’s Images in ChatGPT help page says you can create a new image in a conversation or choose More and then Images. You can also ask ChatGPT to edit an uploaded image, add text or details, or make a background transparent. Generation may take a few minutes, depending on the complexity of the request.

OpenAI says ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers. A December 16, 2025 release-note entry described an improved Images experience and listed Free, Go, Plus, Edu, and Pro as available plans at that time. That dated rollout information does not mean every feature or limit is identical across plans today.
How to create or edit an image
- Open ChatGPT and start a conversation, or choose More and then Images.
- Describe the image you want, including important details such as subject, layout, and any text to include.
- To edit an existing image, upload it and describe the changes you want.
- Wait for the result; generation can take a few minutes depending on complexity.
- If needed, follow up with a more specific request to revise the image.
How do the Free plan limits work?
OpenAI’s Free Tier FAQ says image creation has a usage limit separate from the main chat limit. It does not publish one fixed number of free images or a universal reset interval. When you reach an applicable tool limit, ChatGPT notifies you; OpenAI says you must wait for a later time to use the affected tool again.

In the OpenAI Help Center’s words, “If you reach a rate limit for any of these tools, you will need to wait for a later time to use any of these tools.” Check the notice in your account for guidance about your own access; do not rely on a fixed daily quota or reset time.

If you only create images occasionally, Free may be enough; you can wait if you reach its limit. Go or Plus may be relevant if you regularly hit the available allowance and want higher or expanded limits. OpenAI does not promise unlimited image generation on these plans.

When does the ChatGPT image limit reset?
OpenAI does not publish one universal reset interval for image generation. Its Free Tier FAQ says that after reaching a tool limit, you need to wait until later to use the affected tool again. Follow the notice shown in your account.
Do Go or Plus offer more image generation?
OpenAI describes Go as offering higher usage limits than Free for eligible features and extended image generation, and Plus as offering extended limits. The public pages do not promise a universal quota.
