A check mark is a symbol that can signal completion, confirmation, selection, or correctness—but its meaning depends on where it appears. The plain check mark (✓), heavy check mark (✔), emoji-style check mark button (✅), and checked-box symbol (☑) are separate Unicode characters, not interchangeable versions of one character.
What does a check mark mean?
A check mark often indicates that a task is done, an item is selected, or an answer is correct. The meaning comes from the surrounding interface or document, not from a universal rule. Unicode’s emoji annotations associate related symbols with terms including “checked,” “complete,” “done,” and “tick”; those are conventional associations, not a guarantee of what a mark means in every context.
For a paper checklist, the mark commonly records that a listed task has been addressed. A digital form may use a check to show a selected option, while a review or quiz may use one to indicate correctness. Look at the label, surrounding text, and interface to determine which meaning applies.
What is the difference between ✓, ✔, ✅, and ☑?
These characters look related, but Unicode assigns each a distinct identity and name. Their appearance can vary with the font and the way a device or application renders them.

Choose the plain or heavy mark when you want a standalone check glyph. Choose the checked-box character when the box itself matters, and the emoji-style button when that presentation fits the context. Do not assume any of them will look identical across fonts, platforms, or applications.
How to insert a check mark in Microsoft Word
Microsoft documents the Symbol menu as a way to insert a check mark in Word. The exact labels can vary by platform or version. Its instructions cover Word for Microsoft 365 and listed perpetual releases through Word 2016.

- Windows or the standard desktop route: Select Insert > Symbol, then choose a check mark from the available symbols.
- To browse more symbols: Open More Symbols. Browse the available characters and, if needed, change the font selector; Microsoft notes that different font sets contain different symbols.
- Supported Mac versions: Select Insert > Advanced Symbol > Symbols, then choose the check mark.

A graphical check mark on its own may not communicate important information to everyone. W3C’s F26 failure technique for WCAG 2.0 Success Criterion 1.3.3 identifies relying on a graphical symbol alone as a failure pattern, giving a check-mark glyph among its examples. The concern is not that check marks are forbidden; it is that a visual cue should not be the sole way to convey necessary meaning.

- For a status or checklist item, pair the mark with a text label such as “Complete” or “Selected.”
- If the mark is part of a control, provide an equivalent accessible name and state so users can understand what it does and whether it is selected.
- Keep surrounding labels clear enough to distinguish completion, correctness, and selection when those meanings matter.
