Children’s wallpaper is a broad category, not a standardized material or safety class. Choose it by matching the design and format to the room, the wall surface, how long you expect to keep it, and whether you plan to install it yourself. A cute pattern is only a good fit if its adhesive works with your wall and its care and safety claims suit your needs.

Choose an installation type that suits your plans

Spoonflower’s wallpaper-type comparison distinguishes formats by factors including DIY or professional installation, removability, permanence, and textured-wall suitability. Do not assume those characteristics apply to every brand or product.
Check wall compatibility before buying
Wall surface and paint can determine whether wallpaper adheres reliably. Spoonflower’s peel-and-stick guidance calls for a smooth, clean, dry wall and warns that textured surfaces, high moisture, and certain washable, scrubbable, or no-VOC paints may interfere with bonding. Its instructions say new paint or primer should dry for at least 30 days before application. These are Spoonflower-specific directions, not universal rules; read the exact product’s installation instructions before preparing the room.

If the wall is textured, recently painted, damp, or finished with a coating the instructions warn against, pause before ordering. Ask the seller whether the exact material is suitable for that surface. A sample can show color and print appearance in the room, but it cannot prove that an entire wall will bond to an incompatible surface.
Evaluate safety and fire claims by their scope
Ask for product-specific documentation covering the wallpaper material, adhesive, inks, and finish. Wording such as “VOC-free,” “PVC-free,” or “GREENGUARD certified” is not, by itself, enough to establish that every component or the complete installed system has been assessed. Confirm what was tested, which product or component the documentation covers, and whether the certification is current.

The U.S. EPA’s building-products guidance discusses GREENGUARD certification and the CDPH method among emissions frameworks. An emissions certification provides evidence within its defined scope; it does not establish zero emissions or guarantee that every aspect of a product is safe.
Some brands publish material-specific claims. Buffalo Bunny reports water-based VOC-free inks, flame-retardant materials, and an EN 13501-1 classification, while noting that ratings vary by material. Livettes lists different specifications for its peel-and-stick and commercial finishes. Hello Circus markets its wallpapers as GREENGUARD certified, PVC-free, and VOC-free, and Spoonflower says the inks it uses are GREENGUARD Gold certified. These are seller statements; check the exact product and relevant documentation rather than applying a claim across an entire catalogue.

A fire rating is not the same as fire resistance. Spoonflower explains that its Class A rating compares burning characteristics in a laboratory and states, “No wallpaper is fire-resistant.” Treat that as an explanation of Spoonflower’s own rating, not a general regulatory statement or a guarantee that a room is fire-safe.

Follow the instructions for the wallpaper you buy rather than transferring steps between formats. For peel-and-stick, Spoonflower lists a cutter, straight edge, and squeegee or hard smoother among the installation supplies. Its installation instructions also explain wall preparation. Pre-pasted paper uses water-activated adhesive and has its own preparation process; permanent products may require paste and different seam or removal techniques.

Before ordering, compare cleanability and suitability for the room’s traffic, and calculate the quantity from the actual wall dimensions and the product’s coverage or panel-sizing rules. Include pattern matching or mural layout requirements where applicable. A sample swatch can help assess color, finish, and scale under the room’s lighting; availability varies by seller and design. Neither a swatch nor a sample replaces checking surface compatibility.
