A pivoting door needs more than a pivot set if it must return to the closed position. A floor-spring door closer combines the pivot arrangement with hydraulic closing control. The historical GCC notice examined here describes versions for timber, aluminium and toughened-glass doors, three strength options for 700–1300 mm opening leaves, 90-degree hold-open or non-hold-open operation, a 130-degree maximum opening, and single- or double-action swing. Those specifications were published in February 2009, so confirm the current model, ratings, installation details and availability before ordering.

A pivot set carries and guides a door around a pivot point. It can support the leaf and allow it to swing, but a pivot by itself does not necessarily bring the door back to centre. A closer is the part that controls the swing and supplies the return force. The Yale Security/ASSA ABLOY catalog excerpt used for this distinction states that pivots support or hang doors, while a door closer is required for door control.
In a floor-spring arrangement, the closer is recessed into the floor below the door. A spindle or bottom shoe connects the mechanism to the door, while a top pivot or complementary fitting guides the upper edge. When someone opens the door, hydraulic resistance controls the movement; when the leaf is released, the spring returns it toward the closed position. The exact pocket, spindle, top pivot and cover dimensions depend on the current product and door construction.

What the historical GCC system was specified to provide
An Architecture & Design product notice dated 19 February 2009 described a GCC floor spring door closer as a self-closing system for pivoting doors. It identified several configurations rather than one universal unit.
| Reported feature | What the 2009 notice says | What to verify today |
|---|---|---|
| Door construction | Packages were offered for timber doors, aluminium doors, or patch fittings for toughened-glass doors. | That the current closer body, spindle, shoes and top fittings are approved for the actual material and fitting system. |
| Door width and strength | Three closer strengths were listed for opening leaves 700–1300 mm wide. | The present manufacturer’s size chart, including door mass, height, wind exposure and traffic conditions. |
| Hold-open choice | 90-degree hold-open and non-hold-open versions were reported. | Whether a hold-open device is permitted or desirable at the installation location. |
| Maximum opening | Maximum opening was stated as 130 degrees. | The current stop arrangement and the angle allowed by the door, wall and hardware. |
| Closing action | Hydraulic control was described as providing slow, controlled closing. | Adjustment method, closing-speed range and latching performance for the current model. |
| Swing type | Single-acting and double-acting operation were listed. | Whether the selected body and pivot set match the required swing direction. |
The width range is not a promise that every 700–1300 mm leaf uses the same strength. The notice specifically says that opening width matters when selecting the closer size. A wide or heavily used leaf can impose more demand than a narrow, light interior door, and the current rating must be checked against the complete assembly.
Understand the swing options before specifying hardware
Single-acting doors
A single-acting pivot door is intended to swing through one side of the doorway and return to its closed position. This is common where the frame, stop, seals or adjacent wall define a preferred direction. Specify the handing and the permitted opening angle, then confirm that the top and bottom pivot hardware is made for that movement.
Double-acting doors
A double-acting door swings in both directions through the opening. The closer and pivot geometry must return the leaf to the centre from either side. The GCC notice listed double-acting operation, while the related KABA 503 notice described a double-action floor or heel spring for kitchen entries and traditional home servery doors.
Hold-open versus non-hold-open
A 90-degree hold-open version keeps the leaf at approximately 90 degrees until it is moved away from that position. A non-hold-open version continues to return the door after release. Choose based on how the opening is used, not simply on convenience: a door that must close reliably should not be specified with a hold-open function unless the site’s safety and operational requirements allow it.

The reported GCC maximum opening was 130 degrees. That is a limit, not a target. A wall, stop, adjacent leaf or item of furniture may require a smaller practical opening, and the current installation instructions should define how the opening is stopped without damaging the closer.

Timber doors
Timber packages generally require a bottom fitting and top pivot that can be securely fixed into the leaf and frame. Check the manufacturer’s permitted mortise depth, fixing locations and reinforcement requirements before cutting the door. A hollow or lightly built leaf may need specified reinforcement; do not assume that a timber package suits every slab.
Aluminium doors
Aluminium leaves and frames use different sections and fixing methods from timber. Confirm that the closer shoe, spindle and top pivot suit the profile, and establish where the floor pocket can be positioned without interfering with thresholds, drainage or embedded services.
Toughened-glass doors
The GCC notice referred to patch fittings for toughened-glass doors. Toughened glass cannot normally be drilled or altered after manufacture, so the glass must be ordered with the correct holes, cut-outs and edge clearances through the approved fabricator. Verify the complete patch-fitting system, glass thickness and door mass rather than combining an unrelated floor spring with existing glass hardware.
When the pivot point must move inward
For wider doors, the GCC notice describes counter-pivoting: moving the pivot point inward from the frame. This changes the lever geometry and can make a wide leaf workable where a traditional edge pivot would place excessive demand on the closer or frame. It also changes the clear opening, swing path and floor preparation.

- Measure the leaf width, height and thickness, then record the intended pivot offset from the frame.
- Check the resulting sweep on both sides of the opening, including walls, adjacent doors, rails and furniture.
- Confirm that the closer manufacturer’s current instructions permit the proposed offset and provide a rated strength for it.
- Coordinate the floor pocket and top pivot so the upper and lower centres are exactly aligned.
Do not select a stronger unit solely because a door is wide, or move the pivot by guesswork. The width and geometry must be evaluated together using the current technical drawing.
A related option: the KABA 503 floor or heel spring
A separate Architecture & Design notice dated 13 May 2009 described the KABA 503-00/Boyd 503 as a double-action floor or heel spring. It was presented for restaurant kitchen doors and traditional home servery doors, where traffic may pass in either direction.
| Reported KABA 503 detail | Qualification |
|---|---|
| Mechanism | Fitted into the bottom of the door, with a top pivot assembly supplied. |
| Door mass | Up to 40 kg, according to the 13 May 2009 notice. |
| Door thickness | 35–50 mm, according to that notice. |
| Action | Double-action operation. |
| Hold-open | Non-hold-open or 90-degree hold-open versions. |
| Finish | Satin chrome. |
These are historical specifications, not a current certification or availability statement. Compare the KABA 503 figures with the present door weight, thickness, pivot layout and closer instructions before treating it as a replacement for another floor spring.
How to select a pivoting-door closer
- Define the movement. Decide whether the leaf is single-acting or double-acting, whether it must return from both directions, and whether a 90-degree hold-open function is actually required.
- Measure the complete leaf. Record width, height, thickness and weight. Include glass, rails, patch fittings, locks and decorative panels in the weight.
- Identify the construction. Select the package intended for timber, aluminium or the specified toughened-glass patch system. Do not mix fittings simply because their finishes look similar.
- Map the pivot geometry. Mark the top and bottom pivot centres, any counter-pivot offset and the full swing arc. Check the 130-degree limit reported for the GCC system against the current drawing.
- Choose the strength from current data. Use the manufacturer’s present size chart. The historical GCC notice lists three strengths over 700–1300 mm widths but does not provide the individual strength thresholds in the notice.
- Check the floor and threshold. Locate services, heating, waterproofing, drainage and structural edges before forming a closer pocket. Confirm finished-floor height and threshold details so the spindle is not left too high or low.
- Confirm approvals and documentation. Obtain the installation template, adjustment instructions, compatible top pivot and any required test evidence before purchasing or cutting the door.
Installation planning and commissioning
Installation should follow the current product template rather than dimensions inferred from a 2009 notice. The work normally requires coordinated preparation of the floor, door bottom and head, but the exact sequence varies by model.
- Set out the centres. Transfer the approved pivot centreline to the floor, frame or head. Recheck the offset and swing clearance before drilling or cutting.
- Prepare the floor pocket. Form the recess to the current closer body dimensions and provide the specified support, drainage or sealing treatment. Keep the body level and accessible for adjustment.
- Fit the door hardware. Install the bottom shoe or heel fitting and the top pivot using the supplied fasteners and any required reinforcement. Glass doors must arrive prepared for their patch fittings.
- Hang and align the leaf. Engage the lower spindle and upper pivot without forcing the door. Adjust the clearances and centreline so the leaf is not rubbing the frame, floor or seals.
- Set the closing action. Use the current adjustment procedure to obtain a controlled closing movement and reliable final seating. Do not remove or substitute hydraulic components.
- Test every permitted position. Open to the intended angle, release from several points in the arc, and test from both directions where the door is double-acting. Check that a hold-open version releases as intended and that a non-hold-open version does not remain parked.
A door that slams, fails to latch, drifts past centre or binds near the opening limit is not ready for handover. Recheck alignment, pivot geometry, seals, floor level and the selected strength before increasing adjustment force.

Fire doors and code-sensitive installations
Do not transfer a historical product description to a fire-resisting door and assume compliance. The cited code excerpt, reproduced on a secondary document site, emphasizes application-specific selection; its current edition was not established. Fire performance belongs to the tested door assembly, including the leaf, frame, closer, pivots, seals, glazing and installation method.
- Identify the required fire rating and the jurisdiction enforcing it.
- Ask for current, assembly-specific test or certification evidence from the manufacturer or responsible supplier.
- Confirm that the pivot arrangement, hold-open function, glazing and threshold details are allowed in that tested configuration.
- Have the responsible building professional or authority confirm the specification where approval is required.
The 2009 GCC and KABA notices do not establish present-day fire compliance, accessibility compliance or code approval.
Troubleshooting common problems
The door will not close fully
Check whether the leaf is out of alignment, the pivot centres are not plumb, seals are resisting movement, or the selected closer is outside its rated range. On a double-action door, inspect the centre position from both directions. Correct the mechanical cause before changing hydraulic settings.

Use only the adjustment range and method specified for the current closer. A damaged valve, contaminated mechanism or incorrect installation may require service or replacement; forcing an adjuster beyond its stop can create a safety failure.
The leaf stops at the wrong angle
Verify whether the unit is a 90-degree hold-open model, a non-hold-open model, or a system with a separate stop. Compare the actual obstruction and stop position with the permitted opening angle. The historical GCC figure of 130 degrees should not be treated as permission to strike a wall or adjacent door.

The floor spring leaks or feels weak
Hydraulic leakage, a bent spindle, loose fixing or excessive door weight can prevent controlled closing. Record the door dimensions and weight, stop using the opening if it is unsafe, and obtain the current service or replacement procedure from the supplier.
What to verify before buying a historical or replacement model
Because both product notices are from 2009, current availability, dimensions and performance cannot be assumed. Ask the supplier for a dated technical sheet and check:

- Current model designation and whether it is still manufactured.
- Rated door width, height and mass for the exact swing and pivot offset.
- Compatible timber, aluminium or glass fittings, including the top pivot.
- Hold-open angle, maximum opening and any required external stop.
- Floor-pocket dimensions, finished-floor limits and adjustment access.
- Replacement parts, warranty terms and installation support in your region.
- Current code, accessibility and fire-door documentation where applicable.
If a listing gives only a finish and a nominal width, it does not establish compatibility. A complete specification must account for the door’s construction, weight, geometry, swing, opening angle and regulatory obligations.
Practical decision guide
| Your requirement | Specification direction |
|---|---|
| Interior pivot door that must return to centre | Use a floor-spring closer matched to the leaf width, weight and pivot layout; a pivot set alone is insufficient. |
| Door must swing both ways | Specify a double-action closer and confirm centring performance from each side. |
| Door must stay open for service | Consider a 90-degree hold-open version only after confirming that the location permits hold-open operation. |
| Toughened-glass leaf | Use the approved patch-fitting package and order factory-prepared glass; do not drill or alter the glass on site. |
| Wide leaf or counter-pivot | Provide the exact width and pivot offset to the supplier and obtain a current rated selection. |
| Fire-resisting or regulated opening | Specify only an assembly with current, jurisdiction-relevant evidence and professional approval. |
The GCC notice is useful as a historical outline of the configurations a pivoting-door floor spring may offer: hydraulic self-closing action, three size options over 700–1300 mm leaves, single- or double-action operation, 90-degree hold-open or non-hold-open choices, and a 130-degree maximum opening. Treat every one of those figures as a reported 2009 specification until a current supplier confirms the model and its suitability for your door.
