Choose a barrier security door or shutter by the opening it protects, the threat it must resist, and evidence for the complete tested or certified assembly—not by the product label alone. A pedestrian security doorset, a rolling shutter, and a vehicle crash barrier are different product families with different standards and code duties.
Start by separating burglar resistance from fire and smoke protection, safe egress, windstorm performance, access control, and vehicle impact protection. Then verify the exact construction, dimensions, hardware, fixing method, and installation conditions covered by the supplier’s assessment.

“Barrier” is an ambiguous term. In an architectural opening, it may describe a burglar-resistant pedestrian door, grille, window shutter, or rolling shutter. In a site-security brief, it may mean a fixed or movable device intended to stop or control vehicles. Those applications cannot be specified from the same checklist.
A pedestrian doorset or shutter is normally selected to control unauthorized entry through a building opening. A vehicle barrier is selected for entry-control facilities, access-control points, or a protected perimeter where vehicles may pass. The anticipated attack, operating cycle, geometry, foundations, controls, and life-safety obligations are different. State the opening type and intended use in the project documents before asking for products.

- Pedestrian opening: a door, window, grille, curtain-wall opening, or shutter used by people.
- Rolling opening: a rolling shutter or similar opening construction that may be openable or non-openable.
- Vehicle route: an active or passive barrier controlling or resisting vehicles at a perimeter or entry point.
Do not describe a vehicle barrier as a burglar-resistant pedestrian door, and do not treat a burglar-resistance classification as proof of vehicle impact resistance.
Which standard applies to a security door or shutter?
| Product or performance question | Relevant reference | What it covers | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burglar resistance of pedestrian doorsets and shutters | EN 1627:2021 | Requirements and classifications for burglar-resistant pedestrian doorsets, windows, curtain walling, grilles, and shutters, including rolling and non-openable constructions. | It classifies the assessed construction product and configuration. It does not classify standalone hardware, directly assess lock or cylinder resistance to picking tools, cover electronic access-control requirements, or apply universally to vehicle and goods barriers. |
| Fire and smoke protection, egress, and related opening protection | UL Solutions Doors, Windows and Related Hardware Application Guide | A reference for locating, specifying, or verifying certified doors, windows, and related hardware for fire and smoke protection, egress, and windstorm resilience. | Certification and installation must match the project’s applicable requirements. Fire/egress evidence is separate from burglar-resistance classification. |
| Vehicle security barriers | ASTM E3335-25 | Design, selection, and application guidance for vehicle security barrier systems at entry-control facilities, access-control points, and protected-area perimeters. | Selection still depends on owner requirements, site conditions, and applicable code restrictions. It is a vehicle-barrier path, not a pedestrian-door classification. |
EN 1627:2021 is the relevant European classification reference when the opening is within its stated scope. The Swedish Institute for Standards records SS-EN 1627:2021 as valid and approved on 8 June 2021, replacing the 2011 edition; confirm the national adoption and current status for the project jurisdiction at the time of specification (SIS record).

What EN 1627:2021 actually tells you
It is a classification of an assessed assembly
The useful unit is the complete construction that was assessed: door or shutter leaf, frame, glazing or infill where applicable, hinges, locking points, fasteners, guides, and the specified installation arrangement. A supplier should identify the assessed configuration and any permitted variants. A lock sold separately does not inherit the classification of a door, and a grille or shutter component cannot be assumed to perform like the assembly in which it was tested.
Its scope includes more than swinging doors
The standard addresses burglar-resistant pedestrian doorsets, windows, curtain walling, grilles, and shutters. Its scope includes rolling openings and non-openable constructions, so a rolling shutter can be relevant when its construction and use fit the standard’s definitions. Confirm that the proposed product is being offered under the correct opening category rather than relying on a generic term such as “security shutter.”
Its exclusions matter
EN 1627 does not cover walls or roofs. It also excludes certain doors, gates, and barriers whose main intended use is safe access for goods and vehicles. Requirements for electronic access-control systems are outside its scope. Those exclusions prevent a broad claim that an EN 1627 classification secures an entire façade, controls a vehicle lane, or validates a card reader and its software.
Picking resistance is not directly classified
The standard does not directly assess the resistance of locks and cylinders to picking tools. Ask separately what hardware security, key control, restricted-key arrangements, or electronic controls the project requires, and document how those controls interact with the tested opening. Do not convert a door classification into a claim that every cylinder or access-control device has been tested to the same level.

Keep the performance questions separate
Burglar resistance
Define the anticipated threat in the project brief and request the corresponding classification for the exact opening assembly. The sources establish the classification framework but do not provide a universal class recommendation for every building. The correct level depends on the site’s threat assessment, occupancy, exposure, and owner requirements.
Fire and smoke protection
Fire and smoke performance requires its own certification and code review. Use the UL application guide to locate or verify certified opening protectives, then check the listing, rating, hardware, glazing, frame, and permitted installation details for the jurisdiction. A burglar-resistant shutter is not automatically a fire-rated shutter.
Safe egress
Security hardware must not defeat required escape. Some projects need special locking arrangements that maintain security while allowing egress. Verify the direction of travel, releasing method, fail-safe or fail-secure behavior where applicable, occupant load, emergency power assumptions, and the authority having jurisdiction. Treat the egress review as a separate approval from the security classification.
Windstorm and environmental loads
Windstorm resilience is another independent question. Confirm the required design conditions, exposure, opening size, substrate, and approved assembly. The UL guide addresses windstorm-related opening protection as a certification topic, but its guidance does not turn an EN 1627 classification into a wind rating.
Vehicle impact
If the objective is to stop, delay, channel, or control vehicles, use vehicle-barrier criteria and site-specific design requirements. A pedestrian shutter may resist forced entry yet be unsuitable for a vehicle route, foundation, crash load, or operating cycle.
Access control and operations
Electronic access-control systems are outside EN 1627’s scope. Specify readers, credentials, intercoms, sensors, alarms, monitoring, power, fire-alarm interfaces, and emergency release separately. Confirm that the controls do not alter the tested door or shutter configuration or create an egress conflict.

How to choose a security door or shutter system
- Define the opening and use. Record whether the opening is a pedestrian door, window, grille, curtain-wall opening, rolling shutter, or vehicle route. Note whether it is openable, non-openable, manually operated, powered, or normally held open.
- Write the threat and performance objective. Describe the anticipated attack or operating hazard, the protected area, occupancy, exposure, and owner-required outcome. Do not select a class before this statement exists.
- Identify the governing standards and jurisdiction. Check the national adoption and current edition of EN 1627 where relevant, then review local building, fire, accessibility, electrical, and security requirements. For a vehicle route, review ASTM E3335-25 guidance together with owner requirements and local restrictions.
- Request assembly-level evidence. Obtain the classification or certification document, the tested or listed configuration, dimensions, hardware schedule, permitted variants, glazing or infill details, guides, fasteners, substrate, and installation conditions.
- Check dimensions and interfaces. Compare the proposed width, height, weight, clear opening, headroom, sill, jambs, adjacent wall, lintel, slab, and guide or frame geometry with the assessed assembly. A change in opening size or fixing method may invalidate the evidence.
- Review fire, smoke, and egress separately. Confirm the fire or smoke listing, rating, labels, closers, latches, hold-open devices, releasing hardware, and emergency operation. Verify installation requirements, including applicable NFPA 80 provisions where they govern the project.
- Integrate access control without changing the tested product. Coordinate locks, cylinders, readers, key switches, sensors, alarms, power supplies, and fire-alarm interfaces with the manufacturer and code consultant. Document who releases the opening during an emergency.
- For vehicle routes, change the design path. Classify the device as an active or passive vehicle barrier, establish approach speed and lane geometry, coordinate foundations and drainage, and obtain the owner’s operational and code criteria before selecting equipment.
- Assign installation responsibility. Name the installer, the person checking substrate and anchors, the party witnessing commissioning, and the authority accepting fire, egress, or security evidence. Require installation photographs, as-built dimensions, and commissioning records where the contract demands them.
- Set maintenance and change control. Obtain the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions and define inspection, lubrication, testing, cleaning, replacement-part, and software responsibilities. Prohibit unapproved drilling, hardware substitution, rewiring, or field modifications that could change the assessed configuration.
Documents to request before approving a product
- The current classification, test, or certification document and its issuing body.
- A drawing or schedule identifying the exact leaf, curtain, frame, guides, infill, glazing, hinges, locks, cylinders, fasteners, and controls.
- Permitted dimensions, tolerances, clearances, substrates, anchors, and installation details.
- Evidence that the proposed variant—manual or powered operation, vision panel, grille, emergency release, or access-control hardware—is included in the assessed or listed configuration.
- Fire and smoke listings, labels, hardware requirements, and installation instructions where those duties apply.
- Egress analysis showing how occupants release the opening during normal and emergency conditions.
- Windstorm or environmental-load evidence where the opening is exposed to those demands.
- For vehicle barriers, the owner’s criteria, site layout, operating sequence, foundation information, control logic, and applicable code review.
- Manufacturer installation instructions, commissioning procedure, maintenance requirements, and a process for approving future changes.
UL’s application guide gives a practical installation warning: “Care should be taken to verify that the doors, frames, glazing and hardware are installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions, and in accordance with NFPA 80 requirements.” Apply that discipline to every opening, not just the door leaf.
How to compare two proposed systems
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask of every proposal | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Scope and intended use | Is it a pedestrian opening, rolling shutter, grille, or vehicle barrier? Is the stated use consistent with the governing standard? | Product description, opening schedule, site plan, and standard reference. |
| Tested or certified configuration | Do the dimensions, frame, guides, infill, hardware, controls, substrate, and fixing details match the assessed assembly? | Classification or certification, drawings, hardware schedule, and installation details. |
| Threat objective | What threat or operating hazard is the system intended to address, and who approved that objective? | Owner brief, threat assessment, and design review record. |
| Fire, smoke, and egress | Is there separate evidence for fire or smoke protection? Can occupants release the opening as required? | Listing, labels, egress calculations, release sequence, and authority comments. |
| Access-control integration | Will readers, cylinders, sensors, alarms, power, and emergency interfaces preserve the assessed configuration? | Control schematic, hardware approval, cause-and-effect matrix, and commissioning record. |
| Installation constraints | Can the existing wall, slab, lintel, jambs, guides, anchors, drainage, and clearances meet the instructions? | Survey, substrate approval, anchor details, installer method statement, and photographs. |
| Lifecycle responsibility | Who inspects, maintains, tests, repairs, and approves modifications? | Maintenance manual, service plan, spares list, training record, and change-control procedure. |
Compare like with like. A proposal that supplies a higher-sounding label but omits the tested dimensions, substrate, or installation conditions is less useful than one with a clearly bounded, verifiable assessment.

Vehicle barriers require a different specification
ASTM E3335-25 is a guide for vehicle security barrier systems at entry-control facilities, access-control points, and other protected-area perimeters. Its intended users include facility owners, military commanders, security personnel, planners, specifiers, designers, and engineers. The guide addresses active and passive barriers, including fixed and movable examples.
Begin a vehicle-barrier brief with the route, not the product name. Show the approach lanes, stopping or control point, sight lines, pedestrian segregation, emergency access, drainage, foundations, power, communications, and maintenance access. State whether the barrier is normally open or closed, how an authorized vehicle is identified, what happens during power loss, and how emergency responders pass.
Non-DoD projects may need to investigate their own owner requirements and code restrictions. Obtain written confirmation of the required vehicle performance and operating sequence; do not infer it from a pedestrian-door classification or from a manufacturer’s generic “security barrier” wording.
Installation and commissioning checks
Before installation
- Survey the opening and compare actual dimensions with the assessed product drawings.
- Confirm wall, slab, lintel, jamb, and guide substrates can accept the specified anchors and loads.
- Resolve interfaces with fire stopping, insulation, waterproofing, finishes, thresholds, drainage, and adjacent glazing.
- Freeze the hardware and control schedule before fabrication; substitutions require documented approval.
During installation
- Use the manufacturer’s sequence, approved anchors, fastener spacing, shims, clearances, and tolerances.
- Protect labels and certification marks, and record concealed anchors and structural interfaces before closing finishes.
- Check that guides, locks, closers, sensors, emergency releases, and power or control wiring are installed as specified.
- Do not drill, weld, trim, or add devices in the field unless the manufacturer and approving authority confirm the change.
At commissioning
- Operate the opening through its normal cycle and verify alignment, latching, release, obstruction sensing, and manual override.
- Test the documented emergency and fire-alarm sequences with the responsible code and security parties.
- For vehicle barriers, test authorized passage, denial, power-loss behavior, emergency release, controls, warning devices, and recovery after a fault.
- Deliver as-built drawings, test records, labels, manuals, training, spare-parts information, and the maintenance schedule.

Fix: Name the opening, objective, governing references, assessed configuration, and evidence required for approval.
A lock is treated as the rated product
Why it fails: EN 1627 classifies the assessed construction, not standalone building hardware, and does not directly classify picking resistance.
Fix: Specify hardware security and key or credential control separately, then verify compatibility with the tested assembly.
Burglar resistance is used as a fire or egress claim
Why it fails: Fire, smoke, and escape performance have separate listings and code requirements.

A concise specification brief you can issue to bidders
State the following in the request for proposal:
- Opening location, type, dimensions, operating mode, and surrounding construction.
- Threat or vehicle-control objective and the owner’s required outcome.
- Applicable edition and jurisdictional requirements for burglar resistance, fire, smoke, egress, windstorm, access control, and vehicle security.
- Required assembly-level classification or certification, including permitted variants and installation conditions.
- Hardware, cylinders, controls, sensors, emergency release, power, and alarm interfaces.
- Submittals: certificates, test or listing documents, drawings, calculations where required, installation method, commissioning plan, manuals, and maintenance schedule.
- Change-control language stating that substitutions or field modifications need written approval from the responsible designer, manufacturer, and authority where applicable.
This format forces bidders to answer the same questions and makes it harder for a generic “security” label to conceal a mismatch between the opening and the evidence.

Bottom-line selection rule
Select the system only after the project team has identified the opening and threat, chosen the correct standards path, verified the complete assessed assembly, and separately approved fire, smoke, egress, windstorm, access-control, vehicle, and installation requirements that apply. The best product is not the one with the broadest marketing description; it is the one whose documented configuration fits the opening, the jurisdiction, and the way the building will actually operate.
