If you are deciding between green and black linen draperies, the wall color should be chosen with the entire sightline in mind—not in isolation. In Kristi Linauer’s February 10, 2016 account, both options were attractive, but black ultimately fit her particular dining room better because it coordinated with nearby black-and-white elements and left room for the very light green walls she preferred.

That conclusion belongs to her room, palette and priorities. It is not a universal rule that black curtains are better, that green curtains require neutral walls, or that one color performs better. Use the same decision points—adjacent rooms, how much green you want to repeat, your wall-color goal, and the contrast you want from the windows—to make the choice for your own dining room.
The short answer: choose the color that supports your wall plan
Green linen draperies make sense when you want the window treatment to be a major color statement and to echo green elsewhere. Black linen draperies make sense when you want a strong neutral textile that can carry a graphic accent and leave more freedom for a pale green wall.

Linauer’s original post narrowed her own decision to solid green linen or solid black linen, with a black-and-white Greek key accent along the leading edge of either panel. She was leaning toward black. Her dining room was small, had eight-foot ceilings, opened to a kitchen with green cabinetry, connected visually to a black-and-white music room, and sat near a coral buffet in the entryway. Those relationships—not a decorating formula—drove her reasoning.
Her stated preference for green was personal and vivid: “I love the green because, well, green is my favorite color and I think it breathes life into a room.” She also worried that repeating green on another large surface could make the kitchen’s cabinetry feel less distinctive. Black, in her view, would coordinate with the music room, work with the planned Greek key detail, avoid competing with the coral buffet and allow the very light green wall color she wanted.
What each drapery color does in this specific decision
Green linen: a deliberate color echo
Green linen would bring the homeowner’s favorite color directly to the windows and create a visual bridge to the green kitchen. That can be the right move when the goal is an intentionally color-forward room. The fabric would not merely cover the glass; it would become one of the largest colored surfaces in the dining room.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe complication in this room was repetition. The adjoining kitchen already contained extensive green cabinetry. Linauer was concerned that green draperies could make the color feel overused or reduce the sense that the kitchen’s cabinetry was special. She also anticipated that choosing green panels might push her toward a more neutral wall color, because she did not want green fabric and strongly colored walls competing across the same sightline.
Those are useful questions for any connected floor plan: How much green is already visible from the dining table? Is the green in the kitchen the same undertone as the proposed linen? Do you want the draperies to repeat that color, or to give the eye a break before it reaches the next room?

Black linen: contrast and wall-color flexibility
Black linen was Linauer’s final leaning because it solved several coordination problems at once. It related to the black-and-white music room, supported the planned black-and-white Greek key accent and did not add another large green element beside the kitchen. In her judgment, that left the dining-room walls free to be the very light green she preferred.
Black is not automatically easier in every dining room. A black panel can become the strongest visual weight around a window, especially in a small room. Its success depends on the surrounding values, the amount of natural light, the wall undertone and whether other black details are visible nearby. In this case, the black-and-white rooms supplied an existing visual connection, so the draperies would participate in a palette that was already present rather than introduce an unrelated dark note.
The shared Greek key idea
For either fabric color, Linauer planned a black-and-white Greek key fabric accent along the leading edge of each panel. She described cutting fabric to make the trim after not finding trim she liked. That is a project concept, not evidence that a particular retail trim was used or tested.
The trim would change the decision in an important way: even the green option would contain a strong black-and-white reference, while the black option would gain a patterned edge instead of reading as a completely plain panel. Before committing, lay the proposed trim beside the linen at the actual window. Check it in daylight, evening light and from the doorway that connects the dining room to the other spaces.
Compare the options using the room’s real sightlines
The table below keeps the comparison tied to the factors described in Linauer’s account. It does not assign performance ratings; the source provides personal judgments, not measurements or fabric testing.

How to decide before you paint
1. Map the visible connections
Stand at the dining-room entrance, at the table and in the adjoining kitchen. Note which walls, windows, cabinetry and furnishings are visible at each position. A color that looks balanced when viewed straight on may feel excessive when several rooms are seen at once.
Recommended Free Tools
Write down the large color fields already in view. In the documented room, those fields included green kitchen cabinetry, black-and-white elements in the music room and a coral buffet in the entryway. Your list might include a painted island, an upholstered chair, flooring or artwork. The purpose is not to match every item; it is to identify which colors are already carrying the visual emphasis.
2. Decide whether green should repeat or remain special
If green is already dominant in an adjoining room, green linen will make the transition more continuous. That may be exactly what you want. If the adjoining green is meant to be the distinctive feature, black linen can create separation while still allowing a light green wall to reference the color more quietly.
Look at undertones before ordering fabric. A yellowed olive linen beside a cool blue-green cabinet can make both colors appear mismatched. Hold a large fabric sample against the wall and in front of the window; small swatches conceal the effect of folds and backlighting.
3. Set the wall-color priority
Choose the wall color you would keep if the draperies were temporarily removed. Linauer’s priority was a very light green wall. Because she believed black panels would support that choice, black became more attractive even though green was her favorite color.

If your priority is a quiet, pale wall, determine whether green linen would require you to mute the paint more than you want. Conversely, if the wall is intended to be the main color feature, a black panel may provide the contrast you need while a green panel could blend into or compete with it. These are visual relationships to test, not fixed rules.
4. Test value and undertone at full scale
Paint two large sample areas, at least several feet wide, on different walls or on movable boards. Place the linen sample beside each area, keeping the fabric in the same orientation it will have at the window. Observe it in morning, afternoon and artificial light. A pale green that looks neutral in one exposure can look distinctly green beside black fabric, while a black panel can reveal blue, brown or charcoal undertones in the surrounding paint.
Do not judge the sample only against white primer. Compare it with the floor, trim, adjacent room and the furnishings that will remain. Photograph the combinations from the doorway and from the table; those views are more useful than a close-up of the paint card.
5. Add the Greek key accent after the base colors work
Make a temporary mock-up by pinning or taping the proposed black-and-white accent to the edge of each fabric sample. Check the scale of the motif against the room’s eight-foot ceiling or your own ceiling height, the width of the panel and the size of nearby patterns. A narrow edge can look tailored; an oversized motif can dominate a small room.
If you plan to cut fabric for the accent, account for pattern repeat, seam allowance, shrinkage and the direction of the design before cutting. The original account describes this as a do-it-yourself solution after a preferred trim was not found, so treat it as a construction idea rather than a guaranteed shortcut.

Painting and installation sequence
- Finalize the fabric direction. Confirm whether you are choosing green or black linen after viewing the sample at the window and from connected rooms.
- Choose the paint family. For the documented black-panel approach, begin with very light green samples rather than assuming any pale green will work. For green panels, test the wall against the exact fabric so you can determine whether the paint should recede toward a neutral or remain visibly green.
- Prepare the walls. Clean, patch and sand the surfaces, then prime repairs so the final color is not altered by uneven absorption. Mask trim only after the primer is dry and the wall has been lightly de-nibbed.
- Paint sample areas and evaluate them. Apply two finish coats to the sample boards or test areas, allowing the specified recoat time between coats. Evaluate with the drapery hardware and any black-and-white accent temporarily positioned.
- Paint the final walls before hanging panels. Complete the finish coats, remove masking while the final coat is still workable, and allow the paint to cure according to the paint manufacturer’s label before installing hardware.
- Install the panels and trim. Hang the panels at their intended height and fullness, then inspect the leading-edge accent from the main entry and dining positions. Small changes in stack-back or panel spacing can alter how much wall color remains visible.
Remember that decorative panels are not privacy coverage
A May 6, 2016 follow-up by Linauer clarified that the installed drapery panels were decorative and stationary rather than intended to be drawn for privacy. She later considered a separate privacy treatment, discussing Roman shades or cellular shades.
This distinction matters when copying the look. Stationary linen panels can frame a window and carry the color scheme, but they do not automatically block views at night or control daylight. If privacy is required, plan that layer independently. The follow-up raises Roman and cellular shades as possibilities, but it does not establish a general winner between them. Match the shade type to your window, mounting depth, light-control needs and operating preference.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Turning one homeowner’s preference into a rule. The 2016 post documents a personal decision, not a study of how black or green curtains affect room size, brightness or resale value.
- Choosing from a tiny swatch. Linen texture, folds and window light can change the apparent color. Test a large piece at the actual opening.
- Ignoring adjacent rooms. A dining room may look balanced by itself but disconnected from a green kitchen, black-and-white music room or colorful entry. Judge the whole sightline.
- Painting first and shopping for fabric later. Fabric often has a narrower undertone range than paint. Select or at least reserve the drapery sample before finalizing the wall color.
- Assuming a trim solves every coordination problem. A Greek key edge links black, white and the panel color, but its scale and contrast can also become the room’s dominant pattern.
- Expecting decorative panels to provide privacy. If the panels are stationary, specify a separate shade or other privacy layer before installation.
A practical decision rule for your dining room
Choose green linen when your highest priority is bringing green forward, repeating the kitchen color intentionally and making the windows a lively focal point. Choose black linen when your highest priority is connecting to black-and-white elements, keeping the kitchen’s green cabinetry distinctive, protecting a pale green wall plan or avoiding competition with a nearby coral accent.
