Jetmaster’s Australian range separates into three decisions that should not be blurred together: indoor wood fireplaces, gas fireplaces (including open-feature, enclosed and insert formats), and decorative gas-log appliances. The Hearth & Home B36S is a named enclosed direct-vent gas model, but its combustion-air and exhaust arrangement is specific to that appliance and must not be assumed for every gas product.
For a sound architectural specification, start with the intended fuel and visual effect, then confirm the exact model’s dimensions, clearances, fuel supply, vent route, approvals and current manual with Jetmaster’s technical resources and qualified local installers.

Jetmaster’s product pages present indoor wood fireplaces alongside a broad gas range. Within the gas range, the important distinction is not simply “gas versus wood”; it is the appliance format and the way that format belongs in the building. What “authentic wood” means in this range
An authentic wood fireplace is the wood-fuel category in Jetmaster’s indoor range. For an architect or homeowner, the first consequence is that the project must be designed around a real wood-burning appliance rather than a gas visual effect. Fuel storage, delivery, ash handling, operating practice and the building’s local rules become part of the brief, while the fireplace opening, hearth and surrounding finishes must follow the selected model’s instructions.
Jetmaster’s category pages do not provide one universal set of dimensions or clearances for every wood model. Treat the current brochure and installation manual as model-specific documents. A change in firebox size, frame, surround or installation context can alter the required clearances and construction details. Do not transfer a dimension from one model to another simply because the products appear in the same category.

Questions to resolve before choosing a wood model
- What room, wall build-up and finished opening are available?
- What model dimensions and clearances are stated in the current manual?
- How will the project handle the selected fuel and routine operation?
- Which local building, fire and emissions requirements apply at the project address?
- Can the architect, builder and installer coordinate the fireplace, hearth, finishes and any required flue work before construction starts?
How Jetmaster’s gas formats differ
“Gas fireplace” is an umbrella term on the product pages. Jetmaster distinguishes open-feature gas products, enclosed fireplaces and inserts. Those formats can create very different elevations and require different coordination with walls, cabinetry, existing masonry and services.
Open-feature gas models
An open-feature model is selected for the appearance and presentation of the flame area. The exact product documentation determines its enclosure, clearances, ventilation and installation conditions. Do not infer that an open-feature model has the same venting arrangement as an enclosed direct-vent fireplace.

Enclosed gas fireplaces
An enclosed model places the fire behind the appliance’s specified front and is treated as a distinct product type. The B36S is Jetmaster’s named example in this group. Its manual, rather than the general gas category page, is the authority for combustion air, exhaust, framing, clearances and installation details.
Gas inserts for existing fireplaces
An insert is intended to upgrade an existing fireplace opening. That does not mean every existing opening is automatically suitable. The installer must survey the opening, surrounding construction, dimensions, clearances, fuel availability and vent path, then match those conditions to a current insert manual. A visual fit alone is not evidence that an insert can be installed safely or legally.

What the B36S direct-vent designation tells you
The Hearth & Home B36S is identified by Jetmaster as an enclosed direct-vent gas fireplace. Its official installation manual describes the operating principle in model documentation: “Hearth & Home Technologies direct vent gas appliances are designed to operate with all combustion air siphoned from outside of the building and all exhaust gases expelled to the outside.”
In practical terms, the B36S specification addresses two separate air paths: combustion air is drawn from outside, and exhaust products are discharged outside. The arrangement is part of the B36S system and its approved vent components. It is not a definition that should be applied to every Jetmaster gas fireplace, every insert or every decorative gas log.

Why the distinction matters in a drawing set
- Vent route: the route, terminal location and clearances must follow the B36S manual and the approved system, not a generic gas-fire detail.
- Outside-air provision: the manual’s outside-combustion-air description must be coordinated with the wall, roof or other approved termination arrangement.
- Framing and finishes: dimensions around the enclosure, combustible materials and finish interfaces are model-specific.
- Approvals: the manual directs readers to applicable gas standards and local authorities for restrictions, inspection and permits.
The B36S manual surfaced for this topic carries search metadata indicating a 2022 publication. Because manuals can be revised, verify that the version supplied for the project is current before relying on any dimension, clearance or vent component.
Do not confuse a gas-log appliance with an enclosed direct-vent fireplace
Jetmaster’s Mark 4 instructions describe a fuel-effect gas appliance for installation in a fireplace suitable for burning wood. That is a different product situation from an enclosed B36S. A gas log placed in an existing fireplace depends on the suitability of that fireplace and on the Mark 4 instructions for flue, ventilation, clearances and related conditions.

The distinction affects both design intent and compliance. A decorative log set may preserve the appearance of an open fireplace, while an enclosed direct-vent appliance is a complete fireplace product with its own enclosure and venting system. Neither product’s requirements should be copied to the other. Use the exact manual supplied for the model and have a qualified professional confirm the existing fireplace before any conversion.
Choosing between a new fireplace and an existing-opening upgrade
Choose a new enclosed or open-feature fireplace when
- The project has a new wall or room layout that can be coordinated around a complete appliance.
- The design requires a defined enclosure, frame or focal elevation.
- The construction team can reserve the specified vent route, services and clearances from the outset.
Investigate an insert when
- An existing fireplace is structurally sound and its opening can be measured accurately.
- The client wants to retain the character of the existing opening while changing the appliance.
- The selected insert manual confirms compatibility with the opening, surrounding materials and available fuel.
Investigate a gas-log appliance when
- The design brief calls for a fuel-effect display in a fireplace intended for wood burning.
- The existing flue, ventilation and clearances can be assessed against the gas-log instructions.
- The client understands that a gas-log appliance is not the same as an enclosed direct-vent fireplace.
A specification workflow for architects and designers

- Define the brief. Record whether the client wants wood fuel, an open-feature gas presentation, an enclosed gas fireplace, an insert or a gas-log effect. Note the room, intended focal point and operating expectations.
- Identify the project context. For a new build, reserve the fireplace zone, services and vent route early. For an existing fireplace, record opening width, height, depth, wall construction and the condition of the flue and surrounding materials.
- Select a current model. Download the applicable brochure and installation manual from Jetmaster’s current technical resources. Confirm that the document applies to the exact model and edition being specified.

- Check jurisdictional requirements. The B36S manual directs the reader to applicable gas installation standards and local authorities for restrictions, inspection and permits. The project team should obtain that advice for the actual location rather than assuming another region’s rules apply.
- Issue coordinated information. Include the model number, current manual revision, dimensions, clearances, vent components, finish interfaces and responsibility for installation in the specification and drawing set.
- Use qualified installation professionals. Installation is not a do-it-yourself procedure. A qualified local installer should verify site conditions, complete the work and arrange required inspection or commissioning.
How to evaluate documentation before ordering
A product page can establish a category or model name, but the manual answers the questions that determine whether the appliance belongs in a particular project. Before approval, check the following items in the current documents:
- Model identity: confirm the exact model designation, not just a family name or photograph.
- Dimensions: compare the appliance envelope with the finished opening, framing and access space.
- Clearances: identify requirements for walls, mantels, cabinetry, flooring, finishes and other combustible materials.
- Fuel: confirm the fuel type and availability at the site; do not substitute assumptions from another model.
- Venting: map the approved vent components, route, terminations and separation distances.

Applying B36S details to every gas product
The B36S manual’s outside-air and outside-exhaust description is model-specific. The correction is simple: cite the B36S manual only for a B36S specification and use the applicable document for every other product.
Treating an insert as a universal retrofit
An insert must fit the existing fireplace and satisfy its own requirements. Measure first, inspect the surrounding construction and obtain professional confirmation before committing to the design.
Using gas-log instructions for an enclosed fireplace
Mark 4 instructions concern a fuel-effect appliance in a wood-suitable fireplace. They do not supply the enclosure, venting or framing requirements for the B36S or another enclosed model.

Technical documents can change. The B36S search metadata indicates a 2022 publication for the manual reviewed here; verify the current revision with Jetmaster before issuing construction information.
Choosing by appearance alone
A photograph cannot confirm clearances, vent routing, fuel connections or permit conditions. Use the current brochure for design intent, then use the manual and project support for buildable details.
Working with Jetmaster’s technical and project support
Jetmaster’s resource centre lists brochures, manuals, CAD files and BIM resources, while its architect/specifier service is aimed at project coordination. The company’s phrase “Design with confidence. Specify with Jetmaster.” is brand copy, not an independent performance endorsement; the practical value is access to the documents and project assistance needed to verify a chosen model.
When contacting project support, send the project location, intended fuel, new-build or existing-fireplace context, opening dimensions, preferred visual format and any preliminary vent constraints. Ask for the current model manual, drawings and CAD/BIM files, then have the local installer reconcile those documents with site conditions and authority requirements.
What can and cannot be concluded from the range information
The range information establishes a clear product map: Jetmaster offers indoor wood fireplaces; gas products span open-feature, enclosed and insert formats; the B36S is a named enclosed direct-vent model; and the Mark 4 is a separate gas-log example for a wood-suitable fireplace. It does not establish a league table for efficiency, heat output, price, stock or marketplace availability. Those facts must be checked for the exact model, region and date if they matter to the project.
For architecture and design work, the safest selection is therefore the one that matches the client’s fuel and visual brief while fitting the building, vent route, clearances and local approvals documented for that specific appliance.
