The bold choice for these hallway bathroom walls is a teal-background floral wallpaper. Kristi Linauer found the pattern on Spoonflower and ordered a sample, but her August 23, 2023 post records a design decision in progress—not a confirmed installation. The white-background version of the same floral pattern is the quieter alternative. The right choice depends on how much color, visual drama and wall space the guest bathroom can support alongside its new countertop, painted vanity and planned fixture changes.
The teal floral option, in context
Linauer began reconsidering the bathroom walls after other updates changed the room’s color relationships. The bathroom had received a new Vicostone Eysian quartz countertop, and the vanity was painted Behr Glamorous. She was also working on a shower-curtain fabric project. Her remaining plans included replacing silver fixtures with a champagne-bronze finish and changing the accent tile.

Those decisions matter because wallpaper would not be an isolated accent. A saturated teal background would become one of the room’s largest color fields, so it would influence the shower curtain, tile, mirror, shelves, ceiling and metal finishes. Linauer’s idea was not simply to add a pattern to an unchanged room; it was to let the wall treatment guide the remaining choices.
She described the space as a guest bathroom and noted that it was no longer her main place to shower and get ready. That lower personal-use pressure made a stronger design feel more acceptable to her. Her own phrase was that she wanted to treat it as “a dramatic little powder room.” That is a personal preference, not a universal rule that guest bathrooms should be bold.

Why the previous wall-color ideas failed
Benjamin Moore Classic Gray worked elsewhere in the house, but Linauer felt it looked wrong beside the bathroom’s cooler gray countertop. The problem was not that gray is inherently unsuitable for bathrooms; it was that this particular gray relationship did not satisfy her after the countertop changed.
She also tried two very light greens drawn from the shower-curtain fabric. Those options were more colorful than gray, yet still did not give her the effect she wanted. The pale greens failed to provide enough energy or visual focus, which pushed her toward a much more decisive pattern and background color.

This sequence is useful when evaluating your own room. A paint color that looked acceptable before a countertop or fabric change may become unconvincing afterward. Likewise, a related color can still feel too timid if the room needs a strong focal point. Linauer’s move from gray, to pale green, to teal was a search for a better relationship among the room’s fixed and planned elements—not a claim that teal is the correct solution for every bathroom.
Teal background versus white background
The two choices use the same floral pattern, so the decision is primarily about background color and visual intensity rather than changing the motif itself. Linauer liked the white-background version too, but said the teal version would add more color and flair.

| Consideration | Teal-background floral | White-background floral |
|---|---|---|
| Overall effect | More dramatic, saturated and attention-grabbing | Quieter and visually lighter |
| Color contribution | Introduces a major teal field in addition to the floral pattern | Leaves more of the wall visually open and neutral |
| Relationship to the new room updates | Could become the room’s principal color statement beside the countertop and Glamorous vanity | Could let those existing finishes remain more prominent |
| Artwork requirement | May provide enough visual interest to act as the art on the end wall | May feel more restrained, depending on the wall area and surrounding accessories |
| Author’s stated appeal | More color and flair | A pattern she also liked, but with less drama |
The table describes Linauer’s framing of the alternatives, not measured performance or a design rule. A white background can still be highly decorative, and a teal background can look restrained if used on a small wall. The amount of visible wallpaper, lighting and the colors beside it will determine how forceful either version appears in the actual room.
How to evaluate the teal sample before committing
Linauer ordered a sample after finding the teal colorway on Spoonflower. Because the post does not identify the pattern name, designer, price, material specification or current listing status, a sample is the only documented step she took toward testing that exact option.

View it on the wall where the wallpaper would actually go, rather than judging it only in a different room or from an online image.
- Check it beside the countertop. Compare the teal and floral colors with the cooler gray of the Vicostone Eysian quartz. The original gray paint issue arose from this relationship, so it deserves priority.
- Hold it near the vanity color. Look at the sample with the Behr Glamorous-painted vanity in view. Decide whether the teal supports that finish or competes with it.
- Test it with the shower-curtain fabric. The pale greens that previously failed were drawn from that fabric. The sample should be judged against the actual fabric project, not an abstract color description.
- View it at different times. A saturated background can change substantially between daylight and artificial light. Record which conditions make the teal look balanced and which make it feel too strong.
- Measure the intended wall area. A pattern covering a narrow end wall has a different visual effect from the same pattern wrapping most of the room. Linauer specifically considered letting the wallpaper act as the art on the end wall.
- Keep the sample until the other choices are made. Use it while considering the mirror, shelves, accent tile, shower curtain and metal finish so those decisions are coordinated rather than sequential guesses.
These checks help answer a practical question: does the teal work with the room that exists, or does it only look appealing as an isolated swatch?
What the bold wall treatment would change
Linauer’s notes show that choosing teal would trigger several conditional adjustments. They were plans, not confirmed completed changes, but they reveal the design consequences she was weighing.

The shower-curtain approach
She considered changing how the shower curtain would be handled. That makes sense when the wall becomes a large pattern: repeating another prominent pattern could create competition, while a quieter treatment could allow the wallpaper to lead. The right choice depends on the final fabric, its scale and how much of it is visible from the room’s entrance.
The end wall as artwork
Linauer considered allowing the wallpaper to serve as the art on the end wall. In that arrangement, the pattern itself supplies the focal point, so additional framed pieces may be unnecessary. This can make a small guest bathroom feel intentional without adding more objects to a limited wall.
Removing shelves above the toilet
She also considered removing the shelves above the toilet. Open shelving, decorative objects and a high-contrast wallpaper can all compete for attention. Removing the shelves would give the floral pattern a cleaner field and reduce the number of items that must be coordinated.
Using a smaller mirror
A smaller mirror was another possibility. A large mirror can dominate a patterned wall, especially when it reflects the wallpaper repeatedly. A reduced size could leave more of the floral design visible, although the practical needs of bathroom users still have to come first.

Choosing less attention-grabbing tile
Linauer expected the accent tile might need to become quieter if the wallpaper was selected. This is a classic hierarchy decision: if the walls provide the strongest pattern, tile can perform a supporting role instead of introducing a second competing focal point.
Painting the ceiling white
She would likely paint the ceiling white. In her plan, that would provide a visual pause above the saturated wall treatment rather than extending the teal color overhead. Again, this was a contemplated adjustment, not a reported finished result.
When the white-background pattern may be the better fit
The white version deserves serious consideration because Linauer already liked it. It keeps the floral identity while reducing the amount of solid color introduced into the room. That can be useful when the countertop, vanity, shower curtain or tile already provide several competing tones.
Choose the quieter direction if you want the countertop or vanity to remain the strongest feature, if the available wall area is large enough that teal would feel overwhelming, or if you prefer to retain more flexibility for accessories. A white background may also make it easier to keep shelves, a larger mirror or a more noticeable tile without creating as much visual congestion.

Choosing white is not the same as choosing plain. The flowers still establish a pattern and can make the bathroom feel finished. The difference is that the background does less of the room’s color work. Linauer’s own distinction was straightforward: she liked the white pattern, while the teal one promised more flair.
A decision framework for this hallway bathroom
| Question | If the answer points toward teal | If the answer points toward white |
|---|---|---|
| How should the room feel? | You want a dramatic guest-bathroom moment and accept a strong focal wall. | You want floral interest without making the wall the dominant feature. |
| How much pattern is already present? | The other elements can be simplified to support one major statement. | The countertop, fabric, tile or accessories already carry enough visual activity. |
| What should happen to the end wall? | You are comfortable treating the wallpaper as the room’s artwork. | You want room for shelves, a mirror or separate artwork to remain important. |
| How flexible must future changes be? | You are willing to coordinate later choices around teal. | You want a background that accommodates a wider range of future colors. |
| How does the sample look in place? | The teal remains balanced beside the cooler countertop and Glamorous vanity. | The teal overwhelms the room, while the white version still feels complete. |
Use the sample as the deciding evidence. The source does not establish that either colorway was installed, so photographs or claims about a finished result would go beyond what is known.

The August 23, 2023 post does not provide the floral pattern’s name, designer, current Spoonflower listing, price, wallpaper material, roll dimensions, paste method or present availability. It also does not report how the paper performed in a bathroom, whether it was installed near a shower, or whether the planned fixture, tile, mirror and shelf changes were completed.
Confirm those details directly with the current seller before purchasing. In particular, check the product’s stated suitability for your intended wall, installation requirements, cleaning guidance, return terms and the quantity needed for the measured area. Those checks are necessary because the personal post documents a sample and a design decision, not a product test.
A practical pre-installation checklist
- Confirm the exact teal or white colorway and keep the sample for comparison.
- Measure every wall section, including doors, trim and other areas that will not be papered.
- Decide whether the treatment is limited to the end wall or extends farther around the room.
- Set the visual hierarchy: wallpaper first, tile first or another feature first.
- Review the shower-curtain fabric beside the sample before finalizing either pattern.
- Decide whether shelves remain, whether the mirror becomes smaller and whether the wallpaper will replace separate artwork.
- Choose the champagne-bronze fixture direction and accent tile only after seeing them against the sample.
- Plan the ceiling color; Linauer’s teal plan anticipated a white ceiling.
- Verify current product specifications and bathroom-use guidance with the seller.
- Treat all of the documented room changes as proposed until you have personally confirmed what has actually been completed.
The useful lesson from this decorating decision
The strongest idea is not simply “use teal.” It is to let a difficult color problem lead to a deliberate focal point. Classic Gray no longer worked beside the cooler countertop, and two pale greens did not provide enough impact. The teal floral sample offered a way to make the guest bathroom feel purposeful, provided the rest of the room was edited around it.
The white-background pattern remains a valid alternative for the same reason: it preserves the floral character while asking less of every surrounding decision. Compare both samples in the actual room, decide which element should command attention, and remember that the documented project stopped at consideration and sampling rather than a confirmed installation.
