You can use Christian Christmas clipart in a church bulletin, lesson, social post, or design only if the terms for that specific image allow your intended use. A free download is not automatically free for commercial use, editing, or reposting. Check the image’s license, attribution rules, and any separate permissions for Scripture text before publishing.
Compare Christian Christmas clipart by its actual permissions
These examples range from ministry-oriented collections to individual images with broad reuse terms. They are not interchangeable: permission for church materials does not necessarily permit commercial work or posting the original files elsewhere.
| Collection | Stated terms and permitted uses | Key limits |
|---|---|---|
| Christmas Story Clip Art — Ian and Sue Coate | CC BY-NC 4.0. The page describes educational and ministry use, including individual images in educational or ministry web articles, blogs, and social media, with attribution. | No commercial gain; do not redistribute the collection online. Use the images in faithful retellings of Bible stories. |
| Jesus is born — Sue Bentley | CC BY-SA 3.0. The page says commercial use is allowed with attribution. | Adaptations must be shared under the same license. The page was last updated 5 January 2016, so check its current terms before relying on them. |
| St. Nicholas Center clip art | Selected images may be used in church and other non-profit print pieces; credit appropriately. | Images may not be posted on other websites. Contact the center about other uses, and check the rights notice for the specific image. |
| Christmas shepherds — Bible Society Australia | CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. Intended for educational and ministry use under the page’s conditions. | No commercial use or derivative works, including AI adaptations. |
| Openclipart Christian symbol | The individual listing says CC0 1.0, described as allowing commercial use and adaptation. | This listing does not establish the terms for other images on Openclipart. |
| ClipSafari Nativity silhouette | The cited Nativity silhouette listing says CC0. | The listing’s terms apply to that image, not necessarily all ClipSafari artwork. |
CC BY-NC 4.0 and CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 both include a noncommercial restriction; the latter also rules out derivatives. CC BY-SA 3.0 allows commercial use according to the Jesus is born page, but adaptations must carry the same license. Read the linked page and license terms rather than assuming a site-wide rule.

Check these rights before using an image
- Define the use. Decide whether the artwork is for personal use, a classroom or ministry resource, a nonprofit print piece, or something connected to commercial activity. A church setting alone does not answer every license question.
- Read the exact image page. Confirm the license and any page-specific limits. Older listings can change or be interpreted differently from a site’s general description.
- Follow attribution requirements. Where credit is required, include the creator and license information in the manner the page specifies. Do not treat attribution as a substitute for permission.
- Check proposed edits. Cropping, recoloring, combining artwork, or otherwise changing it may count as an adaptation. A no-derivatives license can prohibit those changes; ShareAlike terms can require adapted work to use the same license.
- Check distribution. Permission to use an image in a post or printed bulletin may not permit sharing the original file or uploading it to another website. Keep use of an image distinct from redistribution of its source file or collection.
- Review text separately. If the design includes Bible verses, check the permissions for the translation you use. The art license does not grant rights to Scripture text.
Church bulletins, lessons, and commercial designs
Church newsletters and ministry materials
Some collections expressly support educational or ministry uses, but their conditions still matter. The Christmas Story Clip Art page requires attribution and bars commercial gain and online redistribution of the set. St. Nicholas Center’s offer is narrower in a different way: selected images for church and other nonprofit print pieces, with credit, but not posting on other websites.
Commercial projects
Do not infer commercial permission from a Christian subject, a free download, or permission for ministry use. The Jesus is born page describes its CC BY-SA 3.0 collection as allowing commercial use with attribution, while the two cited FreeBibleimages Christmas sets carry noncommercial terms. Confirm the current listing and comply with its other conditions.

Editing or sharing artwork
If you need to recolor, crop, or incorporate an illustration into a larger design, first establish whether derivatives are allowed and whether the license imposes conditions on the adapted result. If you plan to upload or share the image file itself, look for explicit redistribution permission; permission to display an image is not necessarily permission to repost its file.
Scripture text has a separate permissions check
For the New American Bible, the USCCB states, “No part of the New American Bible may be reproduced in any form without permission in writing from the copyright owner.” Its Bible Permissions page also says that using the text in liturgical books and leaflets may require approval, a license agreement, and a fee, regardless of the amount used. This guidance concerns the New American Bible; check the rules for whichever translation your design uses.

What about clip-art books?
St. Nicholas Center references Clip Art for Seasons & Celebrations of the Church Year (Paulist Press, 1998) as a physical source for church-year artwork. The reference does not establish current store availability or permission to reproduce the book’s illustrations. Buying a book by itself is not a reuse license; check the book’s own permissions before copying its artwork.
