Choose the right kind of Christmas envelope template
A cut-and-fold craft template is for making an envelope from paper, usually to hold a greeting card or letter. It is different from a layout template for a standard envelope with a clear address window. If the address must show through a window, use a document layout designed for that specific envelope instead of assuming a decorative paper pattern will work.
The available templates do not establish a comparative ranking of Christmas designs or provide a single finished size that fits every card. Check the chosen template’s printed dimensions and scaling directions, and compare the assembled envelope with the card or letter you plan to put inside.

How to assemble a printable envelope
The Scholastic-hosted template lists scissors, a pencil, a ruler and a glue stick; tape is optional. Its directions are specific to that pattern, so use the markings printed on the template.

- Cut around the solid outline with scissors.
- Fold along the dotted lines, using a ruler to help make straight creases if useful.
- Attach the bottom flap to the side flaps with a glue stick or tape.
- Put the card or letter inside and close the envelope. A sticker can also be used to seal it.
- Write the address and add postage only after checking that the finished piece is suitable for the way you intend to mail it.

Sending a letter through USPS Operation Santa
USPS Operation Santa has its own letter templates and mailing directions. These are instructions for participating in that program, not a general approval of every handmade or decorative envelope.
- Write Santa’s address on the envelope.
- Put the sender’s full name and return address, including an apartment number if applicable, in the upper-left corner.
- Place a First-Class stamp in the upper-right corner.
- Keep the letter flat. Glitter or glued-on objects can prevent a letter from being uploaded to the site.
- Families may group letters in one envelope and include additional stamps depending on weight. Organizations and classrooms should send each letter separately in its own standard letter-size envelope, with a return address where the child will stay during the holiday.

Check mailing requirements before using a handmade envelope
Postal acceptance and postage depend on the finished mailpiece, not just on whether the paper pattern folds into an envelope. Size, thickness, address placement and other design details can matter. USPS identifies the Domestic Mail Manual (DMM) as the official standards for domestic mail and provides guides for letter and postcard design.
Consult the current USPS Postal Explorer and Domestic Mail Manual for the requirements that apply to your mailpiece. Postal Explorer also describes plastic templates for checking automation compatibility and letter-size dimensions and thickness. Do not treat dimensions on an old craft pattern as proof of current compliance.
