A Christmas greeting card is a printed seasonal message sent to mark the holiday and keep in touch. The tradition is associated with a card commissioned by Henry Cole and designed by J.C. Horsley in London in 1843; today, cards range from single designs to boxed assortments. Here’s how the format developed and how to choose, personalize, and mail a card.
How the Christmas greeting card began
In 1843, Henry Cole asked artist J.C. Horsley to create a card he could send to acquaintances during the busy holiday season. The printed design was a triptych, with the greeting “A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year To You” and a “TO:_____” space for the recipient’s name. That blank made the earliest documented Christmas card personal from the outset. Smithsonian Magazine’s account gives its dimensions as 5 1/8 by 3 1/4 inches.

Hallmark executive Steve Doyal told Smithsonian Magazine: “They discovered that people didn’t have enough room to write everything they wanted to say on a post card, but they didn’t want to write a whole letter.”
From Britain to the United States
Christmas cards took hold in the United States later in the nineteenth century. Printer Louis Prang, a Prussian immigrant working near Boston, is credited with an American Christmas card in 1875. Smithsonian describes a flower image with the words “Merry Christmas”; the Greeting Card Association identifies 1875 as the year Prang introduced his first complete U.S. Christmas-card line. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History also documents his Christmas-card design contests in the 1880s.

The folded card becomes familiar
The folded greeting card that fits into an envelope became prominent in the twentieth century. Hall Brothers began publishing holiday cards in 1915 and adopted this format, which provided more room for a message. Hallmark also dates the start of its in-house greeting-card production to 1915; that is a company milestone, not the beginning of Christmas cards. Smithsonian Magazine and Hallmark’s company history describe these developments.
Choosing an individual card or a boxed assortment
The right choice depends on how many people you’re sending cards to and how much you want each message to feel tailored. Hallmark’s undated corporate product page, accessed in 2026, reports more than 1,600 individual Christmas-card designs and more than 325 boxed designs in its own assortment. Those are Hallmark figures, not a count of the entire market or a guarantee of live availability.

Writing a personal Christmas card message

Check the current postage guidance before mailing. USPS’s September 2025 announcement says its Holiday Cheer stamps are Forever stamps, retaining value equal to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate. That describes the stamp’s value mechanism, not the current price or whether a particular card needs extra postage. Verify the live requirements with USPS’s Holiday Cheer announcement and current postal guidance before sending.

Hallmark’s corporate page also estimates that about 1.3 billion Christmas cards are sent annually in the United States. The company does not identify a study year or methodology for that estimate, so it should be read as a company-published figure rather than an independently verified government count. Hallmark’s Christmas-card page lists its assortment and estimate.
