Eight very different coffee tables show how far a thoughtful finish can go without replacing the furniture. The projects range from black paint and French typography to a stained Union Jack, beadboard, wallpaper, nailhead trim, and two-tone paint-and-stain combinations.

This is an inspiration gallery drawn from a historical roundup first published July 5, 2012, and updated August 1, 2012. It records the visible ideas and the blogs that created them; it is not a tested refinishing manual, product guide, or ranking of durability.
What these eight coffee table makeovers have in common
Every example starts with an existing table and changes its character through surface treatment, graphic detail, or added trim. That makes the collection useful if you like the shape of a table you already own but no longer like its finish. Instead of treating the furniture as disposable, the makeovers use paint, stain, pattern, or dimensional detail to give the same piece a new visual role.
The strongest recurring idea is contrast. Several tables separate the base from the top: one area is painted while another is stained. Other projects contrast a quiet field of color with typography, a flag motif, wallpaper, beadboard, or rows of nailheads. The source captions show the finished looks, but they do not establish the products, preparation methods, number of coats, drying times, costs, or performance of any project.
Eight makeovers at a glance
| Project source | Surface treatment | Visual treatment | Added material or accent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Hen Home | Black painted finish with a stained top | French typography | Typography applied to the top |
| AKA Design | Paint | Country-style update | Beadboard |
| Domestic Imperfection | Stain | Union Jack graphic | Graphic design on the tabletop |
| The Painted Hive | Painted, distressed base with stained top | Distressed contrast | None stated |
| Dear Lillie | Light-blue paint with a stained top | Two-tone color contrast | None stated |
| Pretty City Things | Finish changed on an IKEA table | Decorative surface pattern | Wallpaper and nailheads |
| Pink Postcard | Paint on a round table | Trim-focused accent | Nailhead trim |
| Rachel Bishop Designs | Stained table with a painted white top | Light-over-dark contrast | None stated |
The table is a way to compare design decisions, not to rank the projects. The roundup supplies no comparable figures for price, labor, difficulty, wear resistance, or time, so none of those measures can fairly separate one makeover from another.
1. French typography on a black-and-stained table
Red Hen Home’s example uses a black painted finish on the table structure and a stained top, then adds French typography. The arrangement gives the piece three layers of contrast: dark painted framing, warmer wood color above, and lettering that turns the tabletop into a focal surface.
This approach suits a table whose proportions are attractive but whose original finish feels plain. Keeping the top visually distinct can emphasize its outline, while the lettering introduces a collected, vintage-inspired point of interest. Because the caption does not identify the lettering process, the image should be treated as a style reference rather than proof that a stencil, decal, transfer, or another method was used.
2. Beadboard and paint for a country-style change
AKA Design updates a country-style table with beadboard and paint. Beadboard changes more than color: it introduces repeated vertical lines and a tactile, architectural surface. Paint then unifies the new material with the existing structure so the result reads as one designed object.
Use this idea when a table needs visual texture instead of a graphic motif. The paneling can make a broad, uninterrupted area feel more detailed, while the painted finish controls how prominent that texture appears. The source does not state how the beadboard was cut, attached, sealed, or matched to the table, so those construction decisions require a separate plan for your specific piece.
3. A stained Union Jack tabletop
Domestic Imperfection uses stain to create a Union Jack design on the tabletop. Here, the pattern is integrated into the wood-focused treatment rather than added as a separate paper layer. The recognizable flag geometry gives the surface immediate energy and makes the tabletop the feature seen from across the room.
A graphic like this works best when the rest of the table stays comparatively restrained. The caption confirms a stained Union Jack design, but not the sequence of masking, color choices, or protective finish. Those details should not be inferred from the photograph, especially because stain behavior depends on the wood and on the particular formulation selected.
4. Distressed base with a stained top
The Painted Hive combines a painted, distressed base with a stained top. Distressing changes the visual language of the painted area by making it look intentionally aged, while the stained top preserves a stronger connection to natural wood.

This is a useful model for a table that needs character without a large graphic. The contrast is carried by texture and tone rather than lettering or a bold emblem. Distressing is also highly subjective: a lightly worn edge and a heavily weathered surface communicate different styles. The roundup shows the outcome but does not document where wear was created, how much was removed, or how the finish was protected.
5. Light blue paint over a stained top
Dear Lillie’s table pairs a light-blue painted finish with a stained top. The pale color gives the base a softer, brighter presence, while the stained surface adds depth and keeps the top from looking flat.
This combination demonstrates that paint-and-stain contrast does not have to be dark or dramatic. A cool, light painted area can make a familiar table feel more casual, coastal, or cottage-like depending on the surrounding room. Since the source does not name the blue, the stain, or the sheen, treat the photograph as a relationship between colors rather than a prescription for an exact shade.
6. Wallpaper and nailheads on an IKEA table
Pretty City Things gives an IKEA table a makeover with wallpaper and nailheads. Wallpaper supplies an all-over pattern that paint alone cannot provide, while nailheads add a crisp, tactile boundary or punctuation point.

It can be a practical direction when a tabletop is visually dull but structurally sound, because the pattern becomes the main event. The caption does not identify the wallpaper type, adhesive, edge treatment, or nailhead spacing. Those choices matter on a working coffee table, where cleaning, cups, and abrasion can affect a paper-covered surface.
7. A painted round table with nailhead trim
Pink Postcard paints a round table and adds a nailhead-trim accent. On a circular piece, trim can reinforce the perimeter and make the silhouette feel deliberate. The repeated hardware also creates rhythm without requiring a large painted pattern.
This idea is distinct from the wallpaper project because the nailheads are the principal decorative detail rather than a border around a printed field. It is a good reminder that a small amount of hardware can change the perceived finish of an otherwise simple painted table. The source does not state the trim layout, spacing, attachment method, or paint system.
8. Stained base with a white painted top
Rachel Bishop Designs reverses the more common painted-base arrangement: the table is stained while the top is painted white. The lighter top becomes the visual plane, and the stained structure supplies a darker frame beneath it.
Reversing the finish placement can make a familiar table look entirely different. It also shows that contrast is about location as much as color. A white top will draw attention to the surface, so the condition and shape of that area become part of the design decision. No information is supplied about the white paint, the stain, or the protective coating.
Design patterns that run through the gallery
Paint, stain, and deliberate separation
Paint appears as a full finish, a light-blue base, a black structure, a distressed foundation, or a white top. Stain appears on complete tables, on tops paired with painted bases, and in the Union Jack treatment. The repeated split between top and base is the simplest way to create contrast while preserving the original form.
Graphics that announce a theme
French typography and the Union Jack are the two explicit graphic treatments. They communicate a theme immediately, so the surrounding room should be considered before choosing one. A graphic can be the focal point, but it can also compete with rugs, upholstery, or artwork that already carry strong patterns.

Texture and construction details
Beadboard adds a built-in architectural texture. Wallpaper adds a printed layer. Nailheads add small, repeated points of relief. These treatments affect how the table is seen and touched, not just its color, and they introduce attachment and edge-detail questions that a simple paint change does not.

Distressing appears only in The Painted Hive example, where it is used on the painted base. It should be selected for the look it creates, not assumed to improve durability. The roundup offers no wear testing or evidence that a distressed finish performs better in daily use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a direction for your own table
- Start with the table’s strongest feature. A good top, an interesting leg profile, or a round silhouette can determine whether the emphasis belongs on the surface, the base, or the perimeter.
- Choose the level of visual commitment. A solid paint color is quieter than typography, a flag motif, or wallpaper. Nailhead trim and beadboard sit between a plain finish and a full graphic treatment.
- Decide whether contrast should come from color or material. Paint against stain creates a color-and-sheen conversation. Beadboard, wallpaper, and nailheads add physical or printed layers.
- Assign one focal area. If the top carries lettering or a bold motif, keep the base simpler. If the base is distressed or heavily detailed, a quieter top may balance it.
- Check the table’s use before selecting delicate details. The gallery does not establish how any finish handles spills, heat, cleaning, or abrasion. A frequently used table needs those questions answered for the exact products and construction you plan to use.
- Test the visual relationship on samples. The examples demonstrate combinations, not universal color formulas. Small sample boards can help you judge the paint, stain, pattern, and trim together before changing the furniture.
What to do with a table showing everyday wear
A reader of the original roundup described a table that had accumulated wear and tear over three years of daily use. That situation is exactly where these ideas can help, but the makeover pictures do not diagnose the underlying damage. Scratches, loose parts, veneer problems, water marks, and structural movement call for different remedies.
First separate condition from appearance. Confirm that the table is stable, inspect the top and edges, and identify areas that will receive the most contact. Then choose whether the new look should disguise wear, highlight a naturally uneven surface, or preserve as much of the existing material as possible. Paint can visually unify mixed areas; stain can keep a wood-focused look; wallpaper or typography can redirect attention to a designed surface. None of those choices, by themselves, confirms that a damaged substrate has been repaired.
What the original roundup does not establish
- It does not provide consolidated, step-by-step instructions for any of the eight projects.
- It does not name paint, stain, wallpaper, adhesive, sealant, or nailhead brands, formulas, or models.
- It does not compare project cost, elapsed time, difficulty, durability, maintenance, or safety.
- It does not identify the exact method used for the French typography.
- It does not report laboratory testing, long-term wear observations, or comparative performance.
Those limits matter because a finished photograph can hide preparation, edge work, drying time, and repairs. If you recreate an idea, use instructions and safety information from the manufacturer of the products you actually select, and verify current availability and formulation details rather than assuming they match a 2012 project.
A practical way to turn inspiration into a plan
Use the gallery as a shortlisting tool. Save the examples that match your table’s shape, then describe each candidate in neutral terms: painted base with stained top, stained graphic tabletop, textured panel with paint, patterned surface with hardware, or painted top over a stained frame. This vocabulary helps you compare looks without pretending that the source supplied a complete method.
Next, make a finish map of your own table. Mark the top, apron, legs, shelves, edges, and any areas where added material would need to stop. Decide where transitions should occur and whether the existing construction can accept the chosen treatment. A round table may benefit from a perimeter accent; a broad rectangular top may support typography, a flag, or wallpaper; a table with strong legs may need only a restrained top treatment.
Finally, write down the unanswered product questions before buying anything: surface preparation, compatibility with the existing finish, cleanup, cure time, protection, and maintenance. The eight makeovers are valuable precisely because they expand the range of possibilities, but the technical plan must be matched to your table and to current product instructions.
The lasting lesson from all eight before-and-afters
The roundup’s value is not a claim that one finish is best. It is the evidence of how many design moves can be made while keeping the same basic piece of furniture. Paint can change the mood, stain can retain a wood-centered identity, and the two can be separated across the top and base. Typography and a Union Jack turn a surface into a statement. Beadboard, wallpaper, and nailheads supply texture or rhythm. Distressing changes the apparent age of a painted part.

Together, the eight projects give you a menu of decisions: preserve the table, choose one focal treatment, and let contrast do the work. The original post by Kristi Linauer was assembled as inspiration, and that is still the right way to read it. Select the idea that fits your table’s structure and your room, then build a separate, product-specific plan for preparation, application, protection, and maintenance.
