Color curves remap an image’s input tones to new output tones. Use the curve’s shape to adjust brightness and contrast by tonal range, or select a red, green, or blue channel to change color balance in shadows, midtones, or highlights. The graph is a control for editing—not a histogram showing how many pixels have each brightness.

What a color curve does
A Curves adjustment maps each original input value to an output value. In Adobe’s documented RGB graph, input levels run horizontally and adjusted output levels run vertically. The diagonal baseline means each input value stays unchanged. Points near the lower-left affect shadows; points near the upper-right affect highlights. Adobe’s Photoshop documentation explains the graph and its controls.
Move a point above the diagonal to lighten the corresponding tonal range; move it below the diagonal to darken that range. Because the curve is continuous, nearby values may change as well. A point therefore influences a region rather than acting like a hard boundary.

How curve shape changes contrast
The curve’s slope indicates how strongly neighboring input tones are separated in the output. A steeper section increases contrast in that range; a flatter section reduces it. A common contrast-enhancing starting point is a gentle S curve: lift some highlights and lower some shadows, making the middle section steeper. It is a starting point, not a universal recipe; the useful shape depends on the image and the intended look. Adobe’s current Curves guide describes these tonal and contrast effects.

The composite RGB curve changes overall tone. Select an individual red, green, or blue channel to adjust color balance within tonal regions. For example, changing a channel in the highlights can make them warmer while leaving shadows comparatively neutral. The result depends on the image and the direction and size of the adjustment; there is no single channel move that corrects every color cast. Adobe documents channel adjustments in Photoshop’s Curves help, and GIMP’s color-curves tutorial explains RGB curves in its own workflow.

A careful way to make a first adjustment
- Choose the tonal or color range. Decide whether you want to change overall brightness and contrast, or a particular RGB channel.
- Add a point in that range. Place it where the graph corresponds to the shadows, midtones, or highlights you want to affect.
- Move it slightly. Raise it to lighten or lower it to darken. For a channel curve, judge the color shift in the image rather than assuming a particular move will suit every photograph.
- Anchor a neighboring range if needed. A second point can help limit changes elsewhere, but it does not guarantee that only one tonal region will be affected.
- Compare with the original. Review the image as a whole and reduce or undo the adjustment if it creates unwanted changes. Small moves make the effect easier to assess.
Choose an editing workflow that fits your application
Curves appears in more than one editor, but interfaces, color modes, and workflows are not identical. Adobe documents Curves for RGB, CMYK, LAB, and grayscale in Photoshop; do not assume every editor offers the same modes or controls.
Photoshop: use an adjustment layer for a reversible edit
Adobe documents Curves adjustment layers as a non-destructive option. By contrast, the direct Image > Adjustments route applies the adjustment to the layer and discards image information. The available workflow and wording can depend on the Photoshop version; consult Adobe’s Photoshop Curves documentation for the documented controls.

GIMP: consult the version-specific manual
GIMP’s version 3.2 manual describes Curves as its most sophisticated tool for changing color, brightness, contrast, or transparency. That is the manual’s description of GIMP’s tool, not a ranking across all editors. See the GIMP 3.2 Curves manual for its interface and behavior.
When curves are useful—and what they do not guarantee
Curves are useful when you want control over particular tonal ranges or want to adjust color through separate channels. Their trade-off is that the graph takes practice to predict: a small change can affect nearby tones, and an aggressive curve can produce a look that does not fit the image. Simpler tonal controls may be easier for broad, straightforward changes, but the cited sources do not establish that Curves is always better than sliders or that one editor outperforms another.

Adobe’s September 30, 2026 guide calls Curves Photoshop’s most flexible adjustment tool for controlling brightness, contrast, and color balance. That is Adobe’s characterization of its own Photoshop feature, not an independent comparison.
