Columbus, Indiana became famous for architecture because civic leaders, local institutions and industrial patronage made ambitious design a practical choice for an ordinary Midwestern city. The Cummins Foundation Architecture Program, established in 1954, paid architectural fees for eligible public and nonprofit projects. At the same time, school officials, churches, businesses, universities and private residents commissioned important work of their own. That combination created a sustained pipeline rather than a one-off landmark.

Why did Columbus become famous for architecture?
The short answer is that Columbus developed a durable commissioning system. Local leaders wanted public buildings that expressed confidence in the city’s future, while industrial patronage lowered the financial barrier to hiring high-caliber architects. The result was a concentration of modern buildings unusual for a city of Columbus’s size.
This was not simply a case of famous architects happening to visit Indiana. The city’s schools, churches, banks, civic agencies and cultural organizations repeatedly treated architecture as part of their public mission. Once several strong projects were completed, later clients had a local example to point to and a community accustomed to discussing design. The collection grew through a feedback loop of ambition, funding, professional expertise and public acceptance.
Civic ambition met industrial patronage
Columbus’s industrial base, especially the presence of Cummins, supplied more than employment. J. Irwin Miller, a Cummins leader and civic figure, promoted modern architecture as a way to improve institutions and signal a broader cultural outlook. The company, the Cummins Foundation and the foundation’s architecture program were related but distinct actors: the company was the industrial enterprise; the foundation was its philanthropic organization; and the program was a mechanism for supporting architectural commissions.
The National Park Service’s documentation of modernism in Bartholomew County records this patronage context alongside the area’s architectural resources. It places Columbus’s buildings within a regional history of modern design rather than treating them as isolated curiosities.
The Cummins Foundation Architecture Program
Visit Columbus dates the Cummins Foundation Architecture Program to 1954. Its central offer was straightforward but unusual: for eligible public and nonprofit projects, the foundation paid architectural fees. That allowed a school, church or civic organization to consider a leading architect without carrying the full design cost in its own budget.
Indiana University’s account of the J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program describes how the school initiative took shape in the mid-1950s. School boards selected architects from a list of modernist designers supplied by J. Irwin Miller. This arrangement helped schools obtain sophisticated design while retaining a formal role in choosing the architect. It also explains why school buildings became an important part of the city’s modernist identity.

What the program did—and did not—control
The foundation program should not be described as the architect-selection authority for every building in Columbus. The documented school arrangement involved a list supplied by Miller, while the broader program covered eligible commissions under its own conditions. Other projects had different clients, patrons and procurement decisions. Some buildings were private commissions, and the city’s architectural story also includes work generated by institutions that were not participating in the same process.
That distinction matters. Columbus became a destination through a network of clients and supporters, not through a single master plan that dictated every design.
How the Columbus model worked in practice
1. A client identified a public need
The process began with a real institution: a school needed classrooms, a church needed worship space, a bank needed a workplace, or a civic organization needed a library or community facility. Because the projects had to function day after day, modernism was tested against circulation, maintenance, daylight and changing patterns of use.
2. Funding made ambitious design attainable
Architectural fees are only one part of a building’s cost, but they can determine which designers a client can realistically consider. By covering fees for eligible public and nonprofit work, the Cummins Foundation reduced that initial obstacle. Construction, land, operations and approvals still belonged to the client and its other funders; the program was not a blank check for every project expense.
3. Institutions became repeat advocates
Once a respected school or church demonstrated that modern design could serve a practical mission, other organizations had evidence that the approach was workable. This helped normalize contemporary architecture in a place where a single experimental building might otherwise have remained an exception.

Architecture became part of how Columbus represented itself. The city’s public realm—buildings, plazas, art and landscapes—could communicate quality and optimism without relying on a monumental historic style. That identity encouraged preservation and interpretation later, because residents came to see the collection as a common cultural asset.

What is in Columbus’s architecture collection?
Visit Columbus’s official architecture guide currently describes more than 80 notable buildings and public spaces. That figure is the guide’s count, not an independently audited census, and it can change as the guide’s scope or listings change. The collection includes churches, schools, banks, civic buildings, houses, public art and designed downtown spaces.
The guide lists work associated with Eliel Saarinen, Eero Saarinen, I.M. Pei, Harry Weese, Kevin Roche and Deborah Berke. Their presence across different building types is part of what makes Columbus legible as a collection: the city is not defined by one architect or one decade.
| Place or experience | What it shows | Access or status noted in the available visitor material |
|---|---|---|
| First Christian Church | An early, highly visible example of Columbus’s modernist religious architecture; it is among the highlighted places in the city guide. | Included in guided architecture-tour programming; confirm current interior access. |
| Miller House and Garden | An integrated residence in which architecture, interiors and landscape were commissioned as one design team. | Guided tour only; advance reservation required. |
| Former North Christian Church | A prominent modern church included in the city’s landmark itinerary. | Check current opening arrangements and tour availability. |
| Former Irwin Union Bank, now the Cummins Inc. Irwin Conference Center | A commercial project showing that the modernist program extended beyond schools and churches into business space. | Current public access depends on building use and visitor programming. |
| Public art and designed downtown spaces | The collection includes the spaces between buildings, not only façades. Art, paving, planting and circulation contribute to the citywide experience. | Outdoor elements can be viewed independently, subject to site rules. |
The guide is most useful as a starting map. Individual buildings can have different owners, hours, interior policies and preservation conditions, so a city tour is more reliable than assuming every landmark is open on the same basis.

Miller House and Garden makes Columbus’s design philosophy easy to see because three specialists shaped one coherent environment. Eero Saarinen designed the house, Alexander Girard designed the interiors and Dan Kiley designed the landscape. The official visitor page dates the design to 1957 and says the property became a National Historic Landmark in 2000.
Architecture, interiors and landscape as one system
The house uses an open plan rather than a sequence of conventionally separated rooms. A grid of skylights brings daylight deep into the interior, while views connect the living spaces to the garden. Girard’s interior work treats furniture, color and textiles as part of the architecture instead of as later decoration. Outside, Kiley organized large garden rooms and a honey-locust allée, giving the landscape its own geometry and rhythm.
Seeing the three layers together explains why the house is more than an architect-designed residence. Its character depends on coordination: the structural grid, the interior palette, the sightlines and the planting plan reinforce one another. Removing any one layer would change how the others are experienced.

Preservation and research
Landmark Columbus Foundation continues preservation and research work focused on the city’s modern heritage. Its activities treat the buildings as living resources that need documentation, stewardship and informed changes—not simply as frozen objects from the 1950s and 1960s.
The foundation’s publication American Modern examines the convergence of civic, industrial and social forces behind Columbus’s modernist tradition. It is useful further reading for visitors who want the institutional story alongside the buildings themselves. Current edition and retail availability should be checked separately.
University education
Indiana University’s J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program keeps Columbus connected to architectural education. The university’s August 8, 2024 account describes continuing interest in the city and revisits how the mid-century school program operated. Students encounter Columbus as a place where design decisions, public institutions and community history can be studied at full scale.
Visitor interpretation
Guided architecture highlights tours translate a dispersed collection into a narrative. A guide can explain why a building was commissioned, how its design responds to use and what has changed since completion. That interpretive layer is important because modern architecture can be easy to misread when viewed only from a car or in a photograph.

Planning an architecture-focused visit
- Start with the official city guide. Use Visit Columbus’s architecture guide to identify the buildings and public spaces that match your interests, whether those are churches, schools, houses, banks or downtown art.
- Reserve a guided highlights tour. The city lists guided architecture tours that provide context and coordinate access. Confirm the current meeting point, duration, price and schedule before traveling.
- Book Miller House separately. Miller House and Garden requires an advance reservation and a guided visit. Allow time for the transportation described from the Columbus Area Visitors Center.
- Plan for mixed access. A landmark may be visible from the street but have restricted interior hours because it is privately occupied, in active institutional use or undergoing preservation work.
- Read before or after the tour. American Modern and the National Park Service’s documentation of modernism in Bartholomew County provide historical context that a short walking itinerary cannot cover.
Common misconceptions about Columbus’s architecture
“One company built the whole collection.”
Cummins and the Cummins Foundation were crucial patrons, but they were not the sole clients. Churches, schools, banks, civic organizations, universities and private owners also shaped the city. Treating every building as a company project erases the institutional variety that made the collection resilient.

“The foundation chose every architect.”
The documented school program involved selection from a list supplied by J. Irwin Miller, while the wider architecture program had eligibility and fee-support conditions. That is different from assigning an architect to every project in town.
“More than 80 is a definitive inventory.”
It is the current count presented by Visit Columbus’s guide. It is a useful indication of scale, not a permanent or independently audited total.
“The renaissance is proven by a single economic statistic.”
The available documentation supports a history of commissioning, preservation, education and tourism. It does not establish a quantified economic return or rank Columbus against other destinations using a verified methodology. The strength of the story is the documented mechanism and the surviving places, not an unsupported numerical claim.

Columbus demonstrates that architectural distinction can emerge when design is treated as infrastructure for civic life. A philanthropic program lowered access barriers; local decision-makers accepted contemporary architecture for ordinary institutional needs; and later generations preserved, taught and interpreted the results. None of those ingredients alone would have produced the city’s reputation.
The lesson is also practical. A city does not need to commission a famous architect for every project. It needs credible clients, clear public purposes, funding that reaches professional design, and institutions willing to maintain quality over decades. Columbus’s modern architecture destination exists because those commitments were repeated—and because the community continues to care for what they produced.
