Per creare un’opera con la sabbia, puoi disporla a strati in una bottiglia trasparente, colorarla prima di usarla oppure fissarla all’esterno di un vaso con la colla. Sono tecniche diverse: nella bottiglia a strati la sabbia resta sciolta, mentre nel rivestimento esterno viene incollata alla superficie.

Come colorare e preparare la sabbia
Se parti da sabbia non colorata, CONCORDIA descrive una procedura con gouache o acquerello. La sabbia deve asciugare prima di essere usata: setacciarla nuovamente aiuta a rompere i grumi.
- Setaccia la sabbia se necessario per rimuovere grumi o impurità visibili.
- Inumidiscila e mescolala con gouache o acquerello, seguendo le indicazioni del colorante scelto.
- Stendi la sabbia colorata su un piatto e lasciala asciugare.
- Setacciala una seconda volta per separare i grumi formati durante l’asciugatura.

Come fare una bottiglia di sabbia a strati
Questa è la tecnica più semplice per creare bande di colore o linee oblique. Il Georgia Museum of Art suggerisce di usare un imbuto; se non ne hai uno, puoi piegare il bordo superiore di un bicchiere di carta per ricavarne un beccuccio. Proteggi il piano di lavoro con giornale o carta kraft.
- Appoggia il contenitore trasparente su una superficie stabile e prepara i colori di sabbia che vuoi usare.
- Versa il primo colore poco alla volta. L’imbuto o il beccuccio improvvisato aiutano a indirizzare la sabbia senza sporcare il bordo.
- Per una fascia inclinata, inclina il contenitore mentre versi; poi raddrizzalo con delicatezza prima di aggiungere il colore successivo.
- Alterna i colori e varia l’inclinazione per comporre bande e profili diversi. Versa lentamente, perché la sabbia all’interno resta sciolta e gli strati possono spostarsi se il recipiente viene agitato.

Come decorare un vaso con sabbia e colla
Per ottenere un rivestimento esterno, la sabbia va fissata al contenitore: non è la stessa cosa che creare strati sciolti all’interno. La guida CONCORDIA descrive un vaso ricavato da una bottiglia PET vuota e propone due modi di applicare la sabbia.
Rivestimento con pasta di sabbia e colla
- Riutilizza una bottiglia PET vuota e tagliane la parte superiore per ricavare un’apertura ampia.
- Irruvidisci la superficie esterna con carta vetrata, come suggerisce la guida.
- Mescola sabbia colorata con colla vinilica o universale fino a ottenere una pasta densa.
- Stendi la pasta sul contenitore e lasciala asciugare durante la notte.
Rivestimento premendo il contenitore nella sabbia
- Spennella la colla sulla superficie esterna del recipiente.
- Premi il recipiente sulla sabbia colorata in modo che questa aderisca alla colla.
- Fissa la sabbia con vernice trasparente spray, secondo la procedura indicata da CONCORDIA.

Che cosa insegna la bottiglia di sabbia di Andrew Clemens
Le bottiglie di Andrew Clemens mostrano quanto possa diventare precisa la composizione dei granelli. Artista americano vissuto dal 1857 al 1894, Clemens raccoglieva arenaria colorata nell’area di Pictured Rocks, nello Iowa, e la macinava per ottenere tonalità terrose. Spingeva e compattava la sabbia all’interno di recipienti trasparenti: secondo lo Smithsonian, tra i granelli non c’era adesivo, ma soltanto pressione e un tappo di cera sigillato.
La scheda dello Smithsonian per Untitled (The Mary Heye Bottle), del 1883, descrive una bottiglia da farmacia realizzata con sabbia di roccia naturalmente colorata. Il museo riferisce che le composizioni di Clemens si fecero via via più intricate e che alcune commissioni richiesero fino a un anno. Quest’ultimo dato riguarda il lavoro dell’artista, non i tempi di un progetto domestico. (Smithsonian American Art Museum; scheda dell’opera)

Per un progetto fai da te, il risultato storico è soprattutto un riferimento per capire come pressione, stratificazione e scelta dei colori possano costruire un disegno senza incollare ogni granello. Le indicazioni museali non forniscono un metodo universale per riprodurre la precisione delle bottiglie di Clemens.
