An overhead pelmet hood is an optional enclosure around the rolled curtain and drum. It can conceal the roll, reduce exposure to weather and tampering, and close a route through which vermin might enter, but it also adds structural, access and maintenance requirements. Specify the shutter, hood, guides, fixings, locks, operator and certification as one tested installation—not as unrelated accessories.

What commercial security shutters are
A commercial security shutter is a vertically moving curtain that closes an opening when a shop, warehouse, service counter or other commercial space is unattended. The curtain may use interlocking aluminium or steel slats, an open rolling grille, or a perforated or vision profile where airflow and visibility matter. Side guide rails retain the curtain; a bottom bar closes against the sill or floor; a drum stores the curtain above the opening.
In Europe, NEN-EN 13241:2003+A2:2016 sets safety and performance requirements for industrial, commercial and garage doors, gates and barriers. Its scope explicitly includes commercial rolling shutters and rolling grilles, including doors used in retail premises mainly for people rather than vehicles or goods. Fire-resistance and smoke-control characteristics are dealt with separately under EN 16034, so compliance with the general door standard does not by itself establish a fire or smoke rating.
Security performance is a separate question again. Burglary-resistance schemes such as LPS 1175 and STS 202 classify resistance to defined attack methods and tools. A shutter can satisfy a general door-safety standard while offering a security level that is unsuitable for the threat at a particular site.

What an overhead pelmet hood does
Internal installations
When a shutter is installed inside a building, the rolled curtain and drum can remain visible below the finished ceiling. A slimline pelmet conceals that mechanism and gives the opening a finished appearance. It can also prevent dust, objects or casual contact with the rotating roll, provided the enclosure is designed with safe clearances and service access.

External installations
Outside the building, a hood shields the rolled curtain and drum from rain, sunlight and wind-borne debris. Australian Trellis Door Company describes its aluminium cover as making tampering with the drum more difficult. The same company says the hood seals the shutter and makes it more resistant to vermin entering through the drum roll. Those benefits depend on continuous, correctly fitted closures and on detailing the ends and interfaces with the wall; a hood with open gaps is not a sealed barrier.
A structural component, not trim
The hood must resist its own weight, wind effects and vibration without sagging into the curtain path. A public technical specification calls for a 24-gauge 300-series stainless-steel hood, intermediate supports to prevent sagging, and brackets that support guide extensions and close the hood. The Hong Kong Housing Authority specification likewise requires hoods and casings to be fully braced against sagging or distortion and to include access doors or plates for routine inspection and servicing.
Ask for the hood gauge, alloy or stainless grade, span limits, intermediate support spacing, end closures, corrosion finish and fixing method. Confirm that the access panel can be opened with the shutter in its normal position and that an engineer can remove the drum or motor without dismantling ceilings, fascia or adjacent finishes.

A hood is usually worthwhile when the drum is exposed to weather, reachable from outside, visible in a customer-facing interior, or located where birds, rodents or dust could enter the building. It is less compelling when the roll sits inside a protected, secure ceiling void that already has compliant access and environmental protection.

- Choose an external hood when the drum would otherwise be exposed to rain, ultraviolet light, snow, salt air or deliberate interference.
- Choose an internal pelmet when appearance, dust control or protection from accidental contact is important below a finished ceiling.
- Coordinate the hood with the structure when the opening is wide, the wall is lightweight, or the shutter is exposed to significant wind pressure. Additional brackets or intermediate supports may be needed.
- Do not use a hood to claim fire performance. Fire and smoke classification requires the appropriate EN 16034 product and installation evidence; an aluminium or stainless cover alone is not a fire test.
Published dimensions and configurations
Maximum dimensions are product- and site-specific. The figures below are published examples, not universal limits. Manufacturers warn that allowable size changes with slat profile, material, gauge, wind loading, barrel capacity, guide arrangement and operating method.
| Example | Published size information | Construction and operation |
|---|---|---|
| Wayne Dalton Model 523 | Maximum width 20 ft; maximum height 14 ft (manufacturer product page) | Interlocking extruded aluminium slats, extruded aluminium guides, aluminium square hood, steel brackets, compact aluminium bottom bar and manual push-up operation |
| Overhead Door Allura Model 653 | Standard maximum width 20 ft (6096 mm); height not stated on the cited product page | Interlocking extruded aluminium slats, two-piece aluminium square hood, extruded aluminium guides, slide-bolt locking and manual push-up operation; perforation and fenestration configurations are available |
| 50 mm extruded-profile vision example | Maximum width 5500 mm, maximum height 3000 mm and maximum surface area 9 m² (manufacturer page crawled 2026) | Curtain weight listed as 8.5 kg/m²; dimensions are indicative and the manufacturer recommends a professional site assessment |
Measure the structural opening, not just the clear passage. Record finished-floor level, lintel depth, side-room, headroom, wall construction and any services that conflict with guides or brackets. A nominal 20 ft curtain may not fit where the hood, guide extensions, motor, emergency release or access panel needs additional space.
Security ratings and installation conditions
Select the rating from the threat
Epping Forest District Council’s Commercial Guide 2023, referring to Secured by Design benchmarks, states that many applications should use at least LPS 1175 Issue 7 Security Rating 1, LPS 1175 Issue 8 Security Rating A1 or STS 202 Burglary Resistance 1. The required level rises with the type and prevalence of crime, the location, the value of contents and the security of the door or window behind the shutter. The guide gives a higher minimum for a roller shutter providing vehicular access where no other entrance is present.
Translate that guidance into a written threat model: opportunist attack, forced entry with hand tools, prolonged attack with powered tools, ram-raid risk, or protection of a vehicle entrance. Then require a certificate for the exact shutter assembly, size range and installation method. A rating for a curtain tested in a laboratory does not automatically transfer to a different guide, hood, lock, fixing substrate or opening size.

Follow the tested fixing schedule
Security Shutters Direct states that LPCB certification under LPS 1175 remains valid only when the shutter is installed in accordance with LPS 1175 requirements. Its installation guidance distinguishes face fitting from reveal fitting and specifies minimum guide-rail fixing counts that increase with guide height. The installer should provide the fixing type, spacing, embedment, substrate assumptions and a completion record. Substituting fewer anchors, moving brackets or using an untested wall build-up can invalidate the certification even if the same curtain and lock are used.
Coordinate the protected opening
A shutter is only one layer in a security line. Check the adjacent wall, glazing, personnel door, roof, ceiling void and service penetrations. A highly rated shutter installed in front of weak glazing does not create an equivalent barrier. Detail anti-lift features, guide engagement, bottom-bar contact and lock protection as part of the opening design.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Operation, locking and emergency use
Manual push-up
Manual push-up shutters can suit small, low-frequency openings. The operator lifts the curtain by hand and lowers it under its own weight or with assistance from springs. Wayne Dalton Model 523 and Overhead Door Allura Model 653 publish manual push-up operation. Confirm the maximum curtain weight, required lifting force, spring life and whether a second person is needed for wide openings.
Chain or motor operation
Chain drives reduce lifting effort on larger or more frequently used shutters. Motors provide controlled opening and closing, but require electrical coordination, limits, controls and an emergency method if power fails. Specify the duty cycle, closing speed, obstruction sensing, manual override, battery or hand-chain release, and access-control interface. For a fire or smoke strategy, ensure the release and closing sequence is compatible with the fire-engineering design.

Locks and anti-lift details
Options include slide bolts, shoot bolts and controlled closing hardware. The Allura Model 653 example uses slide-bolt locking. State where the lock is operated, how it is protected from attack, whether both sides are accessible, and how the shutter interfaces with an alarm or access-control system. An electrically operated shutter still needs a defined secure state during power loss.
What architects should compare in a specification
| Comparison axis | Questions to put in the schedule |
|---|---|
| Threat and rating | What attack is expected? Is the required evidence LPS 1175, STS 202 or another jurisdictional scheme? Does the certificate cover this size and mounting? |
| Mounting | Is the shutter internal, external, face-fit or reveal-fit? What are the clearances, guide extensions and substrate requirements? |
| Opening geometry | What are clear width, clear height, headroom, side-room, total area and wind exposure? Does the hood fit without reducing the passage? |
| Materials | Identify curtain profile, alloy or steel grade, gauge, guides, bottom bar, brackets, hood material and corrosion finish. |
| Hood engineering | State span, intermediate supports, end closures, anti-sag bracing, access panels and removal sequence for servicing. |
| Operation | Choose manual, chain or motor drive; record duty cycle, controls, emergency override and power-failure behavior. |
| Locking | Specify slide bolts, shoot bolts, anti-lift measures, lock guarding and connection to alarms or access control. |
| Performance of the curtain | Does the profile provide solid security, ventilation, daylight or visibility? Are perforation and fenestration compatible with the threat? |
| Fire, smoke and accessibility | Are EN 16034 characteristics required? Does the closing force, threshold and control arrangement meet local accessibility rules? |
| Finish and integration | Coordinate colour, fascia lines, signage, ceilings, lighting, sprinklers, drainage and adjacent doors. |
Installation and handover checklist
- Survey the opening. Verify dimensions, wall composition, level, plumb, wind exposure, services and maintenance access before ordering.
- Confirm the performance brief. Record security rating, fire or smoke requirements, weather exposure, visibility, ventilation, operating frequency and emergency-use needs.
- Approve shop drawings. Require sections through the hood, guides, lintel and sill, plus fixing schedules and access-panel locations.
- Check certification scope. Match the certificate to the supplied curtain, hood, locks, guides, dimensions, substrate and installation orientation.
- Install to the schedule. Use the specified anchors and spacing; do not substitute fixings or omit intermediate supports without written engineering approval.
- Test operation. Cycle the shutter, verify limits, locking, anti-lift action, obstruction response, emergency override and power-failure behavior.
- Inspect the hood. Confirm it is rigid, aligned, closed at the ends and accessible for routine inspection without damaging finishes.
- Handover records. Provide certificates, as-built dimensions, electrical diagrams, maintenance intervals, lubrication guidance, spare-part information and installer details.
Common specification failures and corrections
- Treating the hood as decoration: add structural calculations or manufacturer span limits, bracing and access requirements.
- Quoting a maximum width as a guarantee: recheck width, height, area, wind load and curtain weight for the actual profile and site.
- Ignoring the fixing substrate: have the engineer verify masonry, concrete, steel or lightweight framing and use the certified anchor pattern.
- Choosing a rating without a threat model: document the likely attack and select the corresponding LPS 1175 or STS 202 level.
- Leaving emergency operation undefined: specify manual release, override location, safe closing and access for firefighters or operators.
- Blocking future maintenance: coordinate hood access panels with ceilings, signs, ductwork, lighting and sprinklers before construction.
- Assuming a solid curtain is always best: use perforated or vision profiles only when their security evidence and environmental performance meet the brief.
Cost and lifecycle considerations
A hood adds material, brackets, supports, finishing and installation time. Motorisation, emergency release, certified locks, high-security guides and corrosion-resistant materials add further cost. The relevant comparison is lifecycle value: protection of the drum, reduced weather exposure, easier cleaning, access for servicing and the consequence of replacing a damaged curtain or motor. Obtain a schedule that separates the shutter, hood, guides, operator, controls, electrical work, testing and maintenance so omissions are visible.
Plan periodic inspection of slats, guides, bottom bar, locks, fasteners, hood supports and access panels. Look for corrosion, loose anchors, distortion, unusual noise, uneven travel and gaps at the hood or guides. Stop using a shutter that binds, drops, fails to lock or shows structural movement until a qualified technician inspects it.

Specify the security shutter and overhead pelmet as a single engineered opening. Start with the threat and applicable standard, then set the opening dimensions, mounting condition, materials, hood bracing, fixing schedule, operator, locks, emergency override and maintenance access. A hood is valuable where it protects or conceals the drum, but only when it is rigid, sealed where required and serviceable. The certificate, installation method and surrounding building elements must all support the security claim.
