Use composite decking clips only after matching three things: the board’s groove, the framing material, and the clip manufacturer’s installation guide. Hidden fasteners sit in the grooved edges of compatible boards and attach to each joist, leaving the walking surface mostly free of screw heads. The clip’s spacer or molded geometry may establish a consistent joint, but there is no universal gap or universal clip. A system made for one board profile or frame should not be assumed to fit another.
This guide explains how to select a system, estimate quantities, install clips using two manufacturer-documented examples, handle edges and butt joints, and correct the alignment problems that produce uneven gaps or loose board ends.

What composite decking clips do
A hidden-fastener system replaces most top-down screws with clips that engage the side grooves of a composite deck board. A screw passes through the clip into the joist. When the next board is slid into place, its groove captures the other side of the clip. The result is a row of boards held at the sides rather than by visible fastener heads on the face.
That arrangement matters for appearance, but the clip is not a structural substitute for proper framing. The fastener still has to land in the joist, the board ends still need support, and the first and last boards often require different hardware. Simpson Strong-Tie summarizes the governing principle this way: “For composite decking, consult manufacturer fastening requirements and installation instructions related to spacing.” (Simpson Strong-Tie deck fastening tips)

Clips can also help establish a repeatable gap. The gap is a property of the selected system and board, not a number to copy from a different deck. For example, the cited TimberTech CONCEALoc guidance specifies 1/8 inch to 3/16 inch between boards and a 3/16-inch minimum at posts or adjoining structures. Treat those figures as CONCEALoc instructions, not as a rule for every composite product.
Compatibility comes before quantity or installation
Before buying a box, identify the exact board model and edge profile. A board may be grooved for a particular hidden fastener, grooved only on selected sides, or intended for face fastening at an edge. Then identify whether the joists are wood or aluminum. Fastener geometry, screw length, and the way the screw seats can differ with the framing.
- Board manufacturer and model: Record the brand, collection, thickness, and groove profile from the packaging or installation manual.
- Grooved or square edge: Field clips engage a compatible groove. Square-edge boards commonly need a face-fastened perimeter or a manufacturer-specific edge accessory.
- Framing material: Confirm whether the joists are wood or aluminum and buy screws approved for that frame.
- System-specific parts: Check for starter clips, perimeter fasteners, butt-joint brackets, and any required installation tool.
- Warranty and current instructions: Open the latest board-manufacturer guide before installation; product pages and manuals can change.
Trex identifies its Hideaway hidden fasteners for grooved Trex decking on its product page. Its separate universal-fastener instructions address aluminum framing. TimberTech publishes its own CONCEALoc directions in its composite decking installation guide. Those documents show why “universal” in a product name is not proof of cross-brand compatibility.

Plan the deck before opening a box
Map the joists and board layout
Draw the deck in plan view. Mark every joist centerline, the direction of the boards, the perimeter, posts, adjoining walls, and every planned butt joint. Hidden clips are placed where a board crosses a joist, so a board that stops between joists cannot be made secure simply by adding more clips along its length.
At each butt joint, plan the support before cutting boards. The cited TimberTech guide calls for doubled joists unless its specified L-bracket option is used, and it says each board end needs its own clip. Other systems may use different hardware, so do not substitute a single joist or a generic bracket without checking the selected manual.

Estimate clips without treating coverage as a promise
Count the clip positions rather than multiplying deck area by a package number. Start with one field clip at each joist crossing for every grooved board edge, then add the separate pieces required at butt joints, starters, perimeters, stairs, and unusual framing. Add a small allowance for damaged parts or layout changes only after the manufacturer’s count is complete.
One Trex Hideaway product listing states 90 clips and 50 square feet of coverage when decking is installed on 16-inch centers. That is a Trex manufacturer coverage specification accessed in 2026, not an independent performance statistic. The actual number for your project changes with board direction, joist spacing, board ends, perimeter details, and the specific clip pack. Use the stated coverage as a preliminary estimate, then verify the count against your drawing.

Gather the tools specified by the system
- Compatible clips and screws for the named board and framing.
- Driver and bit appropriate to the supplied screw.
- Tape measure, straightedge, pencil or marker, and a way to mark joist centers.
- Drill or approved predrill setup if the selected manual requires it.
- A beater board at least 24 inches long for seating boards in the TimberTech example.
- Eye protection and hearing protection when cutting or driving fasteners.
- The manufacturer’s starter, perimeter, and butt-joint hardware where specified.
A dedicated tool can make a particular clip system faster, but it is optional only when the manufacturer says so. The Trex Hideaway installation tool is described as a secondary accessory; no universal tool requirement is established for all clips.
TimberTech CONCEALoc: a manufacturer-specific installation example
The following sequence is an example based on the cited TimberTech installation guide. It is not a universal recipe for every composite board. Confirm that your board and clip are the exact products covered by the current guide before copying the steps.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Prepare the first board. Set the starting board in the planned position and make it straight. Deal with the edge condition using the perimeter method shown in the TimberTech guide; a field CONCEALoc clip is not automatically the correct starter fastener.
- Mark every joist. The guide directs the installer to place one fastener at each joist. Transfer the joist centerlines to the board or framing so each screw can be located accurately.
- Set a clip at each joist. Put the CONCEALoc clip into the board groove at the joist crossing. Keep the clip in contact with the board edge rather than allowing it to twist.
- Drive the screw at 45 degrees. While pressing down on the clip, drive the supplied screw through the clip and into the joist. Stop when the clip is secure; overdriving can distort the part or pull the screw below the intended bearing.
- Check contact and alignment. Before moving on, verify that the clip touches the board edge and that the board has not moved from the layout line. A small error at the first board propagates through every later row.
- Bring in the next board. Raise the next grooved board slightly, slide it into the installed clips, and lower it until it is seated against the clip’s spacer tab.
- Seat without damaging the edge. If the board needs persuasion, place a beater board at least 24 inches long against it and tap the beater board. TimberTech’s instruction is explicit: “Never strike the edge of decking directly with hammer as damage will occur. Always use beater board.”
- Repeat at every joist. Install the next row’s clips at all joist crossings, maintain the guide’s spacer-created joint, and recheck straightness before tightening the row.
- Build butt joints on planned support. Use doubled joists unless the guide’s specified L-bracket option applies. Give each board end its own clip, then continue the row while keeping the joint supported and aligned.
- Finish the perimeter as specified. Use the manual’s edge and fascia fastening details rather than forcing a standard field clip into a square edge or tight wall condition.
Do not combine this 45-degree CONCEALoc sequence with Trex hardware or with a different TimberTech profile. Screw angle, spacer shape, and edge details belong to the named system.
Trex Hideaway on aluminum framing: a separate example
Trex’s cited universal-fastener document is specifically for aluminum framing. Do not silently apply its screw or starter details to a wood frame or to another manufacturer’s clip.

- Install starter clips. Position the starter clips centered on the joists, following the document’s edge layout.
- Secure the first grooved board. Seat the board into the starter clips and make the row straight before proceeding. Trex emphasizes: “Important: First board MUST be straight and well secured.”
- Place each universal fastener. Insert a fastener into the groove at each joist crossing.
- Align the screw hole. Move each fastener so its hole is aligned with the center of the aluminum joist, as shown in the instructions.
- Drive the supplied screw. Fasten each clip using the screw and driver setup specified for the aluminum system, keeping the clip seated in the groove.
- Install the next board. Bring the grooved edge into the exposed side of the fasteners, then check the board line and joint before repeating the sequence.
The aluminum document governs only the conditions it covers. If your framing is timber, use the wood-framing instructions for the exact Trex board and fastener rather than adapting this sequence by eye.
First, last, perimeter, and stair boards need separate decisions
Field clips are designed for two grooved edges meeting over a joist. The first board has only one exposed groove, and the last board may have a cut or square edge. Posts, walls, fascia, picture-frame borders, and stair noses create similar exceptions.
Recommended Free Tools
- First board: Use the manufacturer’s starter clips or the approved face-fastening method. Trex’s aluminum-framing document describes starter clips and also shows face fastening as one available starting method in that system.
- Last board: Follow the selected manual for perimeter clips, angled fasteners, or approved face screws. Do not leave a board end held only by friction.
- Wall or post: Preserve the minimum clearance and perimeter gap specified for the board. TimberTech’s cited CONCEALoc guidance gives a 3/16-inch minimum at posts or adjoining structures.
- Stairs and picture frames: Verify whether the board edge is grooved and whether the manufacturer requires visible fasteners or a dedicated accessory.
These transitions are where an apparently compatible clip often fails: the board is cut, the groove disappears, or there is no joist in the location assumed by the field layout.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Gap control and straight-board technique
Use the clip’s spacer only within the tolerances stated for the system. TimberTech’s cited range is 1/8 inch to 3/16 inch between board sides, with 3/16 inch minimum at posts or adjoining structures. A different board can specify another value, so read the board guide before setting a saw, spacer, or chalk line.

Keep the first board straight in both directions. Measure from a fixed reference at several joists rather than trusting one end. If the first row bows, every later row follows the bow because each clip captures the previous board. Stop and correct the first row before installing more fasteners.
Seat boards gradually. Bring the full length into the clips, check the joint at each joist, and use a long beater board if tapping is necessary. Direct hammer blows on a composite edge can chip or deform it; the TimberTech warning applies specifically to its installation method but illustrates why the approved seating method matters.
Butt joints: the most common loose-end problem
A butt joint concentrates movement at two board ends, so it needs both framing and fasteners planned independently of the field rows. In the cited TimberTech instructions, the support is a doubled joist unless the specified L-bracket option is used. Each end receives its own clip, not one clip shared between the two boards.
- Lay out the joint before cutting so the joint falls over the planned support.
- Install or verify the doubled joist, or confirm that the guide’s L-bracket option is allowed for your exact system.
- Place a clip for each board end at the joint and align each screw with its supporting member.
- Check that neither board end rocks independently before continuing the adjacent field row.
Do not copy the doubled-joist detail to a different product without checking its manual. The important transferable principle is that each end needs dedicated support and a fastener arrangement approved for that system.
Troubleshooting uneven gaps, loose clips, and damaged edges
The gaps widen or narrow from row to row
- Stop and measure the first board against a straight reference; a crooked first row multiplies the error.
- Confirm that the correct spacer or clip is installed and fully seated in the groove.
- Check that clips are at the specified joist centers rather than at an assumed spacing.
- Verify the board is the profile named in the clip manual. A similar-looking groove can have a different depth or shoulder.
A clip spins, lifts, or will not pull the board tight
- Remove the screw and inspect whether the clip is actually in the groove.
- Confirm the screw hole is centered over the joist; a screw in the edge of framing may not clamp the clip.
- Use the supplied screw and the driver setting required by the manufacturer.
- Replace a deformed clip instead of burying it under the next board.
A board end moves at a butt joint
- Check for the required doubled joist or approved bracket.
- Verify that each board end has its own clip.
- Do not rely on a clip several inches away from the joint to restrain an unsupported end.
The board edge chips during seating
- Stop striking the decking directly.
- Use the specified beater board; TimberTech calls for one at least 24 inches long in its CONCEALoc sequence.
- Remove the board and look for a misaligned clip or debris in the groove before trying again.
The first board will not stay straight
- Reset the starter or perimeter fasteners and establish a straight reference line.
- On the Trex aluminum example, re-center starter clips on joists and secure the first board before adding field fasteners.
- Do not continue in the hope that later boards will straighten it; they normally follow the first row.
A practical selection checklist
- Write down the exact board brand, collection, thickness, and edge profile.
- Identify the frame as wood or aluminum and confirm joist spacing.
- Download the current installation guide for that board.
- Confirm the named hidden-fastener system, screw type, and any required tool.
- Read the sections for field rows, starters, perimeters, walls, posts, stairs, and butt joints.
- Draw joist centers and board ends, then count every clip location.
- Compare the count with package coverage, treating coverage as an estimate rather than a guarantee.
- Buy only parts listed for the selected system and keep the manual on site.
- Install and secure the first board straight before building the field.
- Inspect each row, joint, and perimeter before the next board hides the fasteners.
What to verify before installation day
Manufacturer documents are the controlling source for the product in your hands. Re-open the latest guide because board profiles, accessory kits, and instructions can change. Confirm local building requirements for the deck structure separately; the clip guide does not replace structural or permit requirements.
For Trex products, begin with the current Hideaway product information and the matching aluminum-framing instructions when applicable. For TimberTech CONCEALoc, use the current installation guide and its detailed best-practices guidance. If your board is from another manufacturer, use that manufacturer’s documentation instead of treating either named system as interchangeable.
