The title identifies an Erosion Protection Systems (EPS) concrete-mattress installation at a power station, but the available public material does not name the station, location, date, mattress configuration, dimensions, installation method or measured result. What can be explained reliably is the system EPS describes: a double-layer fabric formwork injected with high-strength mortar to create an erosion barrier. EPS offers filter, flexible-block and uniform configurations, and those options behave differently under water pressure, settlement and traffic loads.
That distinction matters. A product description can explain how a system is intended to work; it cannot prove which design was selected or whether a particular power-station installation met its design life. The sections below separate EPS’s documented system information from the project facts that still require original drawings, records or a named case study.

The public EPS pages reviewed do not connect a named power station to a specific concrete-mattress design. They do not identify the country, owner, contractor, waterway, construction date, treated area, mattress thickness, mortar specification, anchorage, hydraulic design load or inspection results. No project quantity, cost, schedule or measured erosion performance is available in those materials.
Consequently, it would be inaccurate to state that the installation used a particular EPS variant, was placed underwater, replaced a named conventional method or delivered a quantified saving. The title is a useful pointer to a project, not a complete case study. Any publication or tender document that supplies the missing information should be treated as the controlling record for that installation.

How EPS describes a concrete mattress
EPS defines its concrete mattress as a double-layered fabric that acts as formwork. High-strength mortar is injected between the layers, and the filled fabric becomes a continuous erosion barrier for an engineering structure. The fabric contains and shapes the mortar while it is placed; the finished surface then protects the underlying soil or structure from erosive water movement.
EPS lists the system for wharf and harbour embankments, bridge abutments and road shoulders, culverts, spillways, seawalls, river linings, embankments, lake linings, sludge lagoons, aeration ponds, boat ramps and hovercraft pads. Those applications show the range of environments the company targets, but they do not prove that every listed use, or any particular use at the unnamed station, was selected by a project engineer.

The three EPS mattress configurations
EPS presents three materially different configurations. Their internal fabric arrangement determines whether the finished layer drains, flexes in blocks or forms a relatively uniform sealed surface.

| Filter Matt | The two fabric layers are joined at intervals, leaving filter areas unfilled. | Allows water transfer and relieves hydrostatic pressure. | Culverts, spillways, lake lining, harbour protection, channels and road shoulders. |
| Flexible Block Matt | Hinges divide the mattress into concrete-filled rectangular blocks. | Hinges provide flexibility and help relieve hydrostatic pressure. | Settlement-prone areas, seawall toe protection, undersea cable protection and spillways. |
| Uniform Matt | Internal ties connect the fabric layers and set the filled thickness. | Produces a smooth, watertight finish; EPS says it can be used in trafficable areas. | Reservoirs, ponds, channels, spillways and boat ramps. |
Nothing in the reviewed project material identifies which of these, if any, was installed at the power station. The choice cannot be made from the word “mattress” alone. A design team would need to balance drainage, allowable movement, surface continuity, access and the consequences of a leak or local failure.
How engineers would select a configuration for a power station
Start with the water and soil conditions
Hydraulic calculations should establish normal and emergency flow, velocity, turbulence, drawdown, wave or wake action, uplift and the direction of seepage. Geotechnical information should establish the soil profile, slope stability, bearing conditions and the amount and rate of possible settlement. A site with pressure that must dissipate through the lining raises a different question from a site that needs a continuous watertight surface.
Account for movement and settlement
Power-station earthworks can include embankments, channel transitions and interfaces between concrete structures and soil. If differential settlement is credible, the design should show how joints, hinges, edges and penetrations accommodate movement. EPS associates the Flexible Block Matt with settlement-prone areas, but that association is a product description, not evidence that it is suitable for an unnamed station.
Define the required surface
A Uniform Matt may be considered where the design calls for a smooth, watertight and potentially trafficable finish. A Filter Matt may be considered where controlled water transfer and hydrostatic-pressure relief are central requirements. The specification should state the required thickness, mortar properties, surface tolerance, edge treatment and any loading from vehicles, maintenance equipment or debris.

Design the interfaces
Outfalls, culvert mouths, gates, trash racks, cable routes, drains and structural joints are common locations for concentrated flow or awkward geometry. Drawings should show how the mattress terminates at each interface, how it is anchored against uplift or sliding, and how inspection or repair can be carried out without damaging adjacent equipment.
A typical installation sequence (not a record of this project)
The following is a planning framework for a concrete-mattress installation. It is not evidence of what happened at the power station named in the title.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Record the alignment, slope, water levels, flow paths, obstructions and substrate. Confirm whether work will be carried out in the dry, under water or during a controlled outage.
- Set design criteria. Establish hydraulic loads, settlement assumptions, design life, access limits, environmental controls and maintenance requirements. Select the mattress configuration and thickness from those criteria.
- Prepare the substrate. Remove loose material, trim protrusions, repair voids and provide the specified foundation or separation layer. The finished fabric follows the prepared profile, so poor preparation can create unsupported pockets or stress concentrations.
- Lay out and secure the fabric. Position panels to the approved drawings, align seams and provide the specified overlaps, anchors, edge restraints and penetrations. Underwater placement requires additional control of buoyancy, visibility, currents and diver or remotely operated equipment interfaces.
- Connect injection equipment. Check the mortar mix, pumping route, injection ports, pressure limits and contingency arrangements. The approved method should control filling so the fabric reaches its designed thickness without rupturing seams or displacing the panel.
- Inject the high-strength mortar. Fill in the planned sequence, monitor pressures and confirm that each compartment or panel is properly formed. Records normally include batch information, placement times, interruptions and corrective work.
- Inspect the finished protection. Check thickness, continuity, edges, joints, drainage features, penetrations and surface condition. Any tears, voids, exposed reinforcement or unfilled areas should be repaired under the project quality plan.
- Commission and maintain. Document as-built coordinates, inspection photographs, test results and access arrangements. Establish inspection triggers for unusual flows, scour, settlement, impact or operational changes.
EPS states generally that its systems can be installed underwater. That capability does not establish that underwater work occurred at the power station, nor does it provide a project-specific diving method, outage duration or production rate.
Where a concrete mattress may fit around generating infrastructure
EPS’s application list points to several infrastructure settings that can occur at power facilities: spillways, culverts, channels, embankments, river linings and lake or reservoir edges. In each case, the erosion mechanism should be identified before a lining is specified.

- Spillways and outlet channels: assess high-velocity flow, turbulence at transitions, joints and energy-dissipation structures.
- Reservoir or lake margins: assess wave action, drawdown, seepage and the stability of the bank beneath the proposed lining.
- Culverts and drainage paths: check concentrated inflow, outlet scour and the need for pressure relief.
- Embankments and road shoulders: check traffic or maintenance loading, settlement and edge restraint.
- Seawalls, harbour edges or river banks: assess tides, currents, waves, toe scour and connections to existing protection.
These are design contexts, not claims about the unnamed station. A station owner should map the actual erosion mechanism and operating envelope before deciding whether a mattress is appropriate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How it compares with other erosion-control approaches
EPS names stone pitching, sandbags, gabions, rock mattresses, reinforced concrete and riprap as alternatives. The available material does not provide a controlled, project-specific comparison or a quantified cost or performance winner. A defensible comparison should use the same design basis for every option.

The concrete-mattress option should be evaluated against those same questions, plus the selected fabric configuration, mortar placement method, repair strategy and the project’s ability to obtain a continuous quality record. Claims of faster installation or lower cost should be accepted only when supported by the station’s quantities, programme and measured results.

Without those records, the responsible conclusion is limited to the capability and intended applications EPS publishes, not the performance of a particular power-station asset.
What is known about Erosion Protection Systems
EPS says it was established in Australia in 1995 and works primarily in civil construction, ports, mining, and oil and gas. The company identifies director Mark Roberts as a civil engineer with more than 40 years of erosion-control experience. These are company statements and should not be treated as independent verification of the title’s installation.
EPS also makes general claims about underwater installation, installation speed and savings compared with traditional methods. The material reviewed supplies no quantified saving, production rate or outcome for the power station. Those claims therefore belong in a project assessment only when supported by that project’s contract records and completion data.
Practical takeaway for designers and readers
An EPS concrete mattress is a fabric-formwork erosion barrier filled with high-strength mortar. Its three published configurations address different combinations of drainage, flexibility, pressure relief, watertightness and trafficability. That makes configuration and site design more important than the generic product name.
For the power-station installation identified in the title, the station, location, date, variant, dimensions, installation conditions and measured results remain unverified in the available public material. Treat the EPS description as a basis for engineering questions, then rely on the project drawings, specifications, quality records and post-construction inspections to establish what was actually built and how it performed.
