Constructing the Ineffable: Contemporary Sacred Architecture, edited by Karla Britton, is best understood as a cross-faith conversation about how buildings can support worship, memory, pilgrimage and civic life. Its 2011 essays bring architects, historians and theologians into the same frame, using churches, mosques, synagogues and memorials to ask what “sacred” can mean in modern architecture. It remains a valuable introduction and interpretive guide, but it is not a current catalogue of projects or a survey of scholarship published after 2011.

What “contemporary sacred architecture” means

Contemporary sacred architecture is not a single visual style. It describes the design of spaces used for religious practice, remembrance or encounters with transcendence under modern social and architectural conditions. A building can be contemporary because of its date, its construction methods, its relationship to a changing congregation, or its response to a plural civic setting. The category includes purpose-built houses of worship, additions to historic complexes, pilgrimage settings and memorials.

The central problem is practical as well as philosophical: architecture must give physical form to activities and experiences that believers often describe as invisible, spiritual or ineffable. Plans, structure, daylight, acoustics, thresholds, seating and circulation all affect how people gather and behave. Yet no material device guarantees a religious response. A room may invite contemplation, communal attention or ritual movement, while the meaning people find there depends on theology, ceremony, memory and personal experience.

Britton’s collection approaches that problem across Christianity, Judaism, Islam and the Bahá’í faith. That breadth matters. It prevents “sacred architecture” from becoming a synonym for one familiar church type and allows readers to compare how different traditions negotiate orientation, community, symbolism, permanence and openness to the public.

What is in Karla Britton’s book?

The volume alternates between conceptual essays and discussions organized around named architects, buildings or themes. Its contributors include architects, historians and theologians, so the same building can be considered as a designed object, a historical document and a setting for religious practice. The publisher presents the book as a cross-continental and multi-faith examination rather than a single-author theory.

The illustrations are important to the book’s subject because sacred architecture is experienced through proportion, surface, light, distance and movement as much as through written argument. They should be read alongside the essays, not treated as a substitute for visiting a building or understanding the ritual it houses.

Why the 2007 Yale symposium matters

The project is connected to a Yale School of Architecture symposium held October 26–27, 2007. The symposium’s framing asked how architects shape ideas of transcendence through built form, whether sacred design has a public role beyond explicitly religious functions, and how architecture relates to debates about religion and reason.

Those questions explain the book’s range. The volume should not be treated as a verbatim transcript, and the symposium framing does not establish that every contributor endorses one common position. Instead, it supplies an intellectual setting in which design, belief and public responsibility can be discussed together. Readers interested in contemporary practice will find a conversation about premises and methods rather than a ranked list of “best” buildings.

Four ways to read the collection

The listed chapters support four useful axes for comparison. These are organizing questions inferred from the contents and publisher framing; they are not claims that every essay reaches the same conclusion.

1. Material, light and the experience of presence

Several chapter titles point toward the sensory means by which architecture can make an abstract idea perceptible: “temples of light,” the form of the spirit in Rudolf Schwarz and Mies van der Rohe, and the work of Tadao Ando. Read together, these topics invite attention to how concrete, stone, glass, openings, shadow and reflection establish atmosphere.

The useful question is not whether a material is inherently sacred. It is how a material changes the body’s experience of weight, enclosure, temperature, sound or illumination. A narrow shaft of daylight can mark time; a large luminous volume can gather a crowd; a deliberately restrained palette can focus attention on ritual or landscape. These effects remain contingent on weather, maintenance, ceremony and the expectations visitors bring with them.

2. Memory, identity and the architecture of remembrance

“Architecture, memory and the sacred” and “the architecture of memory” indicate a second concern: buildings preserve, stage and sometimes contest collective narratives. A sanctuary or memorial can connect a community to a founding event, a lost population, a migration or a landscape. Its materials and spatial sequence may make remembrance continuous, occasional or deliberately unresolved.

Memory also introduces ethical questions. Whose history is made visible? Which names, images or practices are given a permanent place? A building that serves several generations may need to accommodate change without erasing earlier meanings. The book’s inclusion of memorials broadens sacred architecture beyond weekly worship and makes this politics of remembrance part of the architectural discussion.

3. Worship, pilgrimage and other religious practices

The chapter on contemporary sacred space and pilgrimage shifts attention from the object-like building to the actions it supports. Worship may require gathering, orientation, procession, reading, singing, silence or shared meals. Pilgrimage introduces distance, repetition and arrival: the route and threshold can matter as much as the destination.

When comparing traditions, ask what the plan enables rather than assuming that visual symbolism tells the whole story. Who moves, who faces whom, where does a service begin, and how can a newcomer understand the sequence? A design may serve a congregation well while appearing austere in photographs, or it may be visually dramatic yet difficult to adapt to changing ritual needs.

4. Sacred buildings as civic places

The symposium’s question about public role is echoed by the book’s attention to religious space in the twenty-first century. Contemporary religious buildings often stand in dense cities, beside public institutions or within neighborhoods whose residents do not share one faith. Their entrances, forecourts, halls, educational rooms and social services can make them civic participants as well as worship spaces.

This does not mean that a sacred building must become secular to be publicly valuable. The more precise issue is how a community’s particular commitments are expressed while the building remains legible and responsible to its wider setting. Questions of access, visibility, security, hospitality and symbolic authority belong in the same conversation as form and detail.

Buildings and themes named in the contents

The contents provide a map of the collection, but chapter titles alone do not justify assigning a complete argument to every essay. They do, however, show the range of cases a reader will encounter.

  • Rudolf Schwarz and Mies van der Rohe: a pairing that foregrounds questions about spirit, modernism and the relationship between abstract form and religious meaning.
  • Tadao Ando: a focused architectural case through which material restraint, natural light and spatial sequence can be examined.
  • Jubilee Church in Rome: a named contemporary church project that places liturgical architecture within a modern urban and institutional context.
  • Los Angeles Cathedral: a case that opens discussion of a major Christian building in a diverse metropolitan setting and of how a cathedral presents itself to the city.
  • Temples of light: a thematic entry point for studying illumination as a carrier of atmosphere, orientation and symbolic intensity.
  • The contemporary mosque: an opportunity to consider how Islamic worship, community life and modern architectural language meet without reducing the mosque to a visual stereotype.
  • Religious space in the twenty-first century: a forward-looking framing chapter, although the book’s publication date means it cannot account for developments after 2011.

These subjects make the collection comparative rather than encyclopedic. It names examples from several traditions, but it does not claim to represent every geography, denomination or approach to sacred construction.

How modern churches, mosques and synagogues can express the sacred

A productive comparison starts with shared architectural problems and then respects each tradition’s particular practices. The following questions can be applied without assuming that all religions use space in the same way:

  • Orientation: Does the plan establish a clear direction, focal point or relationship to landscape, and how does that orientation serve ritual?
  • Threshold: Is entry gradual, ceremonial, compressed or immediately communal? What does the transition from street to sacred room ask visitors to do?
  • Collective form: Does the room emphasize a gathered congregation, smaller study groups, processional movement or multiple simultaneous uses?
  • Sensory register: How do daylight, artificial light, acoustics, texture and temperature influence attention and participation?
  • Time: Can the building accommodate daily prayer, weekly worship, festivals, mourning, teaching and informal social life?
  • Public relationship: Which spaces are open to neighbors, and how are privacy, security and hospitality balanced?

These questions keep analysis grounded in use. They also make it possible to compare a church, mosque, synagogue or Bahá’í building without pretending that their theologies are interchangeable. Similar spatial devices can carry different meanings, while a modest formal difference can have major ritual consequences.

Can architecture create a sense of transcendence?

The collection’s central philosophical issue has a careful answer: architecture can condition an experience that people interpret as transcendent, but it cannot manufacture belief or guarantee revelation. Height, darkness, repetition, silence, framed sky and slow movement can interrupt ordinary habits of attention. They become religiously significant through the practices and interpretations of the people who use them.

This distinction protects both sides of the question. It avoids reducing sacred experience to psychology or atmosphere, while also avoiding the claim that a particular shape is universally holy. A building’s success should therefore be judged by more than photographic impact. Does it support the community’s rituals? Does it remain meaningful when light, weather, crowd size and programs change? Can different users find an intelligible place within it?

What the book contributes—and where it stops

A strong introduction to a difficult subject

The book’s greatest contribution is its deliberate crossing of professional boundaries. Architects can explain decisions of form and construction; historians can place those decisions in longer traditions; theologians can clarify what worship and transcendence mean within a faith. Bringing those voices together helps readers see why a sacred building cannot be evaluated only as an art object or only as a functional container.

Not a current inventory of sacred architecture

Because the hardcover appeared in 2011 and grew from a 2007 symposium, it should not be used as a guide to the latest completed projects, current building technologies or post-2011 scholarship. Readers seeking a present-day inventory will need newer sources alongside it. The book is more useful for learning how to ask architectural questions than for determining what is newest.

A dated review, not a final verdict

In a 2011 Architectural Record review, Norman Weinstein described the collection as an interfaith overview distilled from the symposium. He praised some architect contributions while criticizing aspects of the book. That response is one contemporary critical reading, not a field-wide consensus; readers should weigh it alongside the essays and their own assessment of the collection’s unevenness.

How to read Constructing the Ineffable productively

  1. Start with the framing essays. Identify how each author defines “sacred,” “contemporary” and “public.” Do not assume those terms have one stable meaning across the volume.
  2. Pair a conceptual chapter with a case. Read a discussion of memory or light beside one of the named projects, then note where an abstract claim is supported, complicated or left open by the building.
  3. Track practice, not just appearance. Record who gathers, moves, prays, teaches, mourns or visits, and when those activities occur.
  4. Compare traditions carefully. Use the same questions about orientation, threshold, sensory experience and civic presence, but let each tradition supply its own theological and ritual terms.
  5. Separate the building from its image. Ask what photographs omit: sound, weather, maintenance, crowding, accessibility and the social life around the structure.
  6. Update the conversation. After finishing the book, consult newer writing or visit recent buildings so that its 2007–2011 perspective is placed in a later architectural context.

Who will find this book most useful?

Students of architecture, religious studies, art history and theology will find a compact entry into interdisciplinary debate. Practicing architects can use its questions to test whether a design brief addresses ritual and community rather than relying on symbolic form alone. Clergy, congregational leaders and visitors may appreciate a vocabulary for discussing why a room feels welcoming, solemn, confusing or memorable. Readers looking for a photographic directory or a complete history of sacred buildings should choose a different kind of reference.
