Core and Remnant are coordinated but separate armchair and sofa ranges from Sancal, designed by Note Design Studio. They share a broad seating silhouette, yet use different construction approaches to produce opposite visual effects: Core reads as a substantial, positive volume, while Remnant makes the space beneath and around the seat part of what you see. What Core and Remnant seating is
Core and Remnant are upholstered seating families rather than two names for one sofa with alternate covers. Sancal manufactures both ranges, and Note Design Studio is credited with the design. The ranges are intentionally related. This distinction matters when you are planning a room. You are not choosing between a “solid” and an “airy” version of one interchangeable chair. You are choosing whether the seating should act as a strong object in the composition or allow more of the surrounding architecture to remain legible.

Every listed variant has the same published height and depth, while the widths vary by range and by seating capacity. The two armchairs differ by 3 cm in width, and the two-seat sofas differ by 2 cm. Those small differences can decide whether a piece clears a wall return, aligns with a rug edge or fits between two fixed elements, so use the specification for the exact model rather than assuming that the shared silhouette means identical dimensions.

These are product dimensions, not a promise about the clear space required to deliver the furniture. Before ordering, measure the installation room as well as the route to it: entrance doors, corridors, lifts, stair turns and any narrow internal opening. Ask the dealer whether packaging dimensions or a particular delivery orientation changes the access requirement.
Why the two ranges look opposite
Core: the object as a positive volume
Core’s visual effect comes from concentration. Upholstery and supporting parts read together as a clearly bounded object, making the chair or sofa an assertive element in a seating group. In a large room, that mass can help define a conversation area without relying on a high partition. Against a wall, it gives the arrangement a more anchored appearance. These are compositional effects, not claims about softness or comfort; the feel of the finished piece depends on its specification and upholstery.
Remnant: the void as part of the design
Remnant treats the unoccupied area as visible design material. Looking beneath the seat, you see more of the floor and the supporting structure, so the piece can appear lighter even though its overall depth is the same as the corresponding Core models. This openness can be useful where you want a rug pattern, timber floor or architectural line to continue visually through the seating. It also means that the underside and frame are more exposed, making the selected finish and the quality of the dealer’s specification particularly important.

Sancal describes the concept as using “different construction techniques to create opposite forms from the same shape.” The phrase explains why the ranges coordinate without being interchangeable: the silhouette establishes a common language, while the way the structure is built changes what the eye reads as solid and what it reads as empty.

The Remnant structure in its historical design account
An OnOffice article dated October 21, 2020 describes the engineering problem behind Remnant: the seat had to be supported without a conventional, direct support immediately beneath it. The article attributes the design explanation to Cristiano Pigazzini of Note Design Studio, who said, “The idea was to put emphasis on nothing.”
That account describes a triangulated metallic structure and connected injection-moulded pieces. Treat this as a historical explanation of the collection’s design development, not as a current technical specification for every production edition. If a project requires exact materials, load information, fire classifications or maintenance documentation, request the current technical sheet for the chosen model from Sancal or an authorised dealer.
Upholstery, quilting and finish selection
Both Core and Remnant are presented with fabric choices and quilted backs. The pictured upholstery or finish is not necessarily a permanent catalogue option: Sancal states that fabrics and finishes are updated, and some featured selections may no longer be available. A photograph is therefore a useful reference for the look, but not a substitute for a current fabric card or finish code.

Confirm whether the quote includes the quilted-back treatment shown in the configuration you want, and ask which parts of the frame or base receive the selected finish. If two pieces will be used together, request physical or digital samples under the room’s lighting; a screen image cannot establish how a textile will look next to your floor, paint or natural light.

- Confirm that the code is current for your market and production date.
- Ask for cleaning and replacement-cover instructions before approval.
- Check whether the quoted upholstery is priced as a standard or special category.
- Keep the final specification with your purchase documents for future repairs or additions.
How to choose between Core and Remnant
Choose Core when visual weight is useful
Core is the logical starting point when the seating must read as a strong, self-contained object. It can establish the centre of a lounge arrangement, balance a large open wall or provide a clear counterpoint to delicate tables and lighting. The available three-seat sofa also gives Core the broader published configuration range, which may matter when one long seating element is preferable to several smaller pieces.
Choose Remnant when openness is the priority
Remnant suits a scheme in which floor visibility and a sense of continuation are important. The open area beneath the seat can preserve sightlines across a room, keep a patterned rug legible or prevent a compact seating group from appearing visually dense. Because the underside is part of the appearance, inspect the proposed frame and finish from the angles people will actually see.
Use both when you want a coordinated contrast
Sancal explicitly presents the shared design language as suitable for mixing the ranges in one environment. A practical approach is to assign each one a clear role: for example, use a Core sofa as the room’s principal mass and Remnant armchairs as lighter companion seats, or reverse that arrangement when the architecture already supplies enough visual weight. Keep one variable consistent—such as upholstery family or colour temperature—while allowing the construction contrast to remain visible. The result should look intentionally related, not like accidental mismatching.

- Draw the available footprint. Mark walls, doors, windows, radiators, columns and circulation routes. Use the published width and depth for the exact model, and leave the surrounding movement space required by your own layout.
- Test the sightlines. View the proposed position from the room entrance and from adjacent seats. Decide whether you want the furniture to block less of the floor (Remnant) or read as a stronger foreground object (Core).
- Check the full delivery route. Measure the narrowest doorway, corridor and turn. Ask the dealer for packaged dimensions and delivery requirements; the product dimensions alone do not answer that question.
- Coordinate the specification. Select the model, upholstery, quilting and any visible frame or base finish as one written schedule. Do not rely on a product photograph to identify a current option.
- Approve a current quotation. Have the dealer confirm availability, production timing, shipping terms and the destination-specific total before placing the order.
Buying Core or Remnant through a dealer
Sancal provides a dealer pathway and technical product materials. The published information reviewed for these ranges does not establish a current United States retail price, shipping charge, production lead time or stock position. Those figures can vary with upholstery, model, destination and the dealer’s order cycle, so a dated, written quotation is essential.

If you are specifying several pieces, ask the dealer whether they can place them under one production order so the upholstery and finish are coordinated. Confirm that any later addition will use the same current fabric code; a visually similar replacement may not be an exact match.
Care and documentation questions worth settling
No universal care schedule, textile performance rating or replacement-part policy is established for every Core and Remnant configuration. Those details belong to the selected fabric and production specification. Before signing off, ask for the manufacturer’s care sheet, the cleaning method for the chosen textile, and instructions for the exposed structural elements on a Remnant piece. Keep those documents with the invoice and fabric code so a future cleaner or upholsterer is working from the correct information.
For a commercial or hospitality installation, request the current project documentation rather than assuming that a domestic configuration carries the classifications your building requires. The historical description of Remnant’s structure is not a substitute for current load, fire or compliance documentation.

Core and Remnant are best understood as two coordinated interpretations of one seating idea. Core makes the upholstered object feel present and substantial; Remnant makes the space beneath it an active part of the composition. Start with that visual decision, then use the published model dimensions to test the room, confirm the live upholstery and finish schedule, and obtain a dealer quotation for the exact destination. Mixing the ranges is intentional when their shared language is useful and their opposing spatial effects are part of the plan.
