The iCare Sydney office uses Corian® Solid Surface where visitors and staff encounter the workplace first: a curved reception desk and a breakout-kitchenette benchtop. According to CASF Australia’s project description, thermoforming allowed the surface to follow flowing, organic curves across this five-level office. Bradley Schott of DWP Suters designed the joinery; Aspen Commercial Interiors joined it; and SCF Interiors fabricated it.
What the iCare Sydney project is
Architecture & Design listed the project on 17 June 2025 under the title “Corian® Solid Surface adds flow and dynamic aesthetic to iCare Sydney office.” The accessible listing establishes the publication date and project subject. CASF Australia’s project page supplies the fuller account: iCare’s Sydney workplace spans five levels and uses Corian® Solid Surface in two prominent joinery applications.

The phrase “flow and dynamic aesthetic” describes the visual ambition of the interior rather than a measured performance result. The documented design decision was to use a surface that could be formed into the required curves while presenting a consistent, smooth finish in areas that receive regular use.

Where Corian® was used
The reception desk and benchtop
The reception zone is the clearest expression of the project’s curved language. CASF labels the application “Reception Desk/Benchtop” and describes the desk as curved. That combination matters: the element is not simply a vertical front panel with a straight worktop. The specification had to address the visible face, the working surface and the transitions between them as one piece of joinery.
A reception counter is also a high-contact area. Visitors approach it, staff work behind it, and the surface remains in view from the main circulation path. A continuous solid-surface skin can therefore support the intended visual calm, provided the detailing and fabrication meet the project’s required finish. The available project material does not publish dimensions, radii, substrate construction, joint locations or installation tolerances, so those should not be inferred from photographs or from the word “curved.”
The breakout-kitchenette benchtop
The second documented use is the benchtop in a breakout kitchenette. This places the same material language in a less formal, shared staff area. It also gives the project a practical point of continuity: the reception desk and kitchenette are separate pieces, yet both use Corian® Solid Surface to connect the public arrival space with an everyday workplace amenity.
CASF describes the selected surface as hygienic, durable and low-maintenance. Those are the project source’s characterisations, not independent laboratory findings supplied for this case study. They explain why the material was considered suitable for a frequently used benchtop, but they do not establish a particular stain rating, impact rating, cleaning schedule or warranty outcome.
How thermoforming created the flowing curves
Thermoforming is the fabrication route CASF identifies as enabling the organic curves. In practical terms, a solid-surface sheet is heated until it becomes formable, shaped over or against a prepared form, and allowed to cool while retaining the desired geometry. The method is different from cutting a curve only in plan: it can produce a three-dimensional transition in which a face, edge and worktop turn into one another.

For the iCare desk, that capability addressed the designer’s central requirement: a reception form with a flowing rather than rectilinear outline. The source does not state the heating temperature, mould material, forming equipment, sheet thickness, number of pieces, reinforcement, cooling time or fabrication tolerances. Those parameters are project-specific and must be confirmed with the fabricator during shop-drawing and sample approval.
A documented design-to-fabrication sequence
- Define the geometry. DWP Suters, with Bradley Schott credited as designer, established the reception and kitchenette forms within the broader five-level office design. The project record does not publish drawings or dimensions, so the exact curve radii remain unspecified.
- Coordinate the joinery. Aspen Commercial Interiors is identified as the joiner. Coordination would include the supporting carcass, fixing points, service clearances and interfaces with adjacent finishes, but the source does not list the construction system used here.
- Form the solid surface. SCF Interiors is credited as fabricator. CASF specifically attributes the flowing, organic curves to thermoforming, rather than to a purely faceted or segmented assembly.
- Resolve the finish. The project comment says specifying Corian®, together with its network of fabricators, gave the design team certainty that the required standard of finish could be achieved. The article does not report an independent inspection or a numerical finish tolerance.
- Install and hand over. The documented applications are the reception desk/benchtop and kitchenette benchtop. Installation dates, maintenance instructions and post-occupancy performance are not published in the project description.
This sequence separates what is explicitly recorded from what a commercial joinery package normally has to coordinate. It should be read as a specification framework, not as a claim about undocumented steps on this particular site.
Why the designer selected the material
CASF reports that iCare wanted a workplace reflecting innovation, reliability and well-being. The material selection supported that brief in two ways documented by the project team: it could take the required forms, and it offered a smooth, soft-touch contrast to surrounding natural timbers and ceramic tiles.
“Corian® is the only material that can create the forms required for this project, while also being sufficiently robust and hygienic. The soft touch and smooth finish provides great contrast with the surrounding natural timbers and ceramic tiles. Specifying Corian®, in particular with the network of fabricators, gave us certainty that we could achieve the required standard of finish.”
CASF attributes this statement only to “the project’s designer.” The page separately names Bradley Schott of DWP Suters as designer, but it does not explicitly identify the quotation’s speaker by name. The quotation is therefore best understood as an attributed project comment, not as an independently verified comparison with every other surface material.

Form, touch and surrounding finishes
The contrast described by the designer is material as well as visual. Natural timber and ceramic tile bring their own grain, texture and joint patterns. Against them, the project presents Corian® as smooth and continuous. On a curved reception desk, that continuity helps the eye follow the form without stopping at a series of visibly segmented panels.
That effect depends on fabrication quality. A thermoformed surface can only deliver the intended visual flow if the underlying joinery, seams, edge treatment and adjacent materials are coordinated. The source confirms the intended standard of finish but does not publish close-up defect rates, seam maps or independent quality audits.
Colours specified for the project
The CASF project details name Natural Grey and Pearl. They are project colour references, not a performance comparison. CASF marks Pearl as discontinued, so anyone using the iCare project as a precedent should not assume that Pearl can still be ordered in every market. Confirm the current Australian catalogue, stock position and any replacement colour with the authorised supplier before issuing a specification.
| Colour named on the project page | What can be stated | Specification caution |
|---|---|---|
| Natural Grey | Listed as a project colour | Current local availability is not confirmed by the project page |
| Pearl | Listed as a project colour | CASF marks it discontinued; do not treat it as a current option without confirmation |
No source supplied for this project ranks the colours for durability, hygiene, light performance, cleaning or visual suitability. Selecting a current replacement therefore requires a physical sample and a separate review of the present technical data.

Bradley Schott, DWP Suters — designer
The project credits Bradley Schott of DWP Suters as designer. The designer’s documented concern was to achieve the required forms while balancing robustness, hygiene and a tactile contrast with timber and tile. The source does not assign contract-administration, interior-architecture or site-supervision duties beyond that design credit.

Aspen Commercial Interiors — joiner
Aspen Commercial Interiors is named as joiner. In a curved commercial counter, the joinery package is the connection between the architectural idea and the physical support: carcass geometry, backing, service access and interfaces all have to be resolved before the finished surface is installed. The project page does not disclose Aspen’s materials, shop-drawing sequence or installation method.
SCF Interiors — fabricator
SCF Interiors is credited as fabricator. CASF’s description links the project’s organic curves to thermoforming, making the fabricator central to translating the design intent into a repeatable solid-surface component. No production drawings, mould details or fabrication schedule are published.
Rodrigo Vargas — photographer
Rodrigo Vargas is credited for photography. The photographs document the completed workplace, while the written project details provide the applications, team and material rationale. Images should not be used to infer dimensions, hidden support or colour availability.

The iCare office is useful when a brief calls for a prominent curved counter and a related kitchenette surface, but it is not a ready-made specification. A project team considering a similar result should establish the following items before tender:
- Geometry: plan curves, vertical transitions, edge profiles, overhangs and allowable tolerances.
- Substrate: carcass construction, support spacing, access panels and provisions for sinks, services or equipment where applicable.
- Fabrication: thermoforming capability, maximum sheet size, seam strategy, reinforcement and sample approval.
- Finish: sheen, edge treatment, visible-joint expectations and the standard used for acceptance.
- Colour: a current sample, batch or lot considerations, and confirmation that the selected colour remains available in the project region.
- Operations: cleaning products, routine care, repair procedures and responsibility for future replacement pieces.
These checks do not add undocumented claims about the iCare installation. They convert the case study into questions a new project must answer for itself.

What the published evidence does not establish
The project sources do not provide a bill of quantities, cost, programme, sheet thickness, curve radius, thermal-forming settings, maintenance log, post-occupancy survey or numerical durability or hygiene test. They also do not compare Corian® with alternative solid surfaces, laminates, stone, metal or other fabrication methods. Any article or specification that supplies those figures for this project would be going beyond the documented record.
What is established is narrower and more useful: on a five-level iCare Sydney workplace, Corian® Solid Surface was used for a curved reception desk/benchtop and a breakout-kitchenette benchtop; CASF says thermoforming enabled flowing organic curves; and the credited design, joinery and fabrication teams were DWP Suters, Aspen Commercial Interiors and SCF Interiors. The project designer’s comment explains the selection in terms of formability, robustness, hygiene, tactile finish and coordination with a fabricator network.

Why the project matters to workplace designers
The case demonstrates how a surface specification can carry both spatial and operational intent. The reception desk is an arrival element, so its geometry establishes movement and identity. The kitchenette benchtop is a shared-use element, so the same material language reaches into daily staff activity. Linking those spaces through one surface family avoids treating the front-of-house counter and the breakout area as unrelated insertions.
Its strongest lesson is not that every curved workplace requires Corian®. It is that the material decision, the moulding method and the fabrication team must be considered together. Here, the documented rationale is explicit: thermoforming supplied the geometry, the smooth finish contrasted with timber and ceramic tile, and the credited fabricator network gave the designer confidence in achieving the intended finish.
