At the Swanbourne Beach Residence, Corian® Witch Hazel was used to give the open-plan kitchen a warm, sandy foundation while preserving uninterrupted coastal views. Humphrey Homes paired the satin-finish surface with oak, matt-finish lacquered cabinetry and a carefully sampled fluted island whose sides and front curve around the room.
The result is a calm, luxurious kitchen shaped as much by fabrication decisions as by colour. The project team selected Witch Hazel for its earthy tone and texture, then spent time testing fluting sizes and heating and bending methods so the detail would remain closed through the island’s curves.

A kitchen palette drawn from the coastal setting
The kitchen at Swanbourne Beach Residence was designed in direct conversation with its outlook. The project description from CASF identifies uninterrupted coastal views as a key design context, and Humphrey Homes sought natural hues throughout the kitchen and wider home to complement the surrounding environment.
Corian® Witch Hazel supplied the principal sandy, earthy note. Rather than treating the work surface as a bright focal colour, the team used it to connect the interior with the beach landscape visible beyond the glazing. Oak cabinetry added natural grain and texture. Matt-finish lacquered cabinetry introduced a quieter, more uniform counterpoint, so the composition was not dependent on one material alone. Why Witch Hazel was chosen for this project
Humphrey Homes described Corian® as bringing a warmth that stone did not provide in this kitchen, while its satin finish worked with the room’s other textures. That is a project-specific rationale, not a general performance ranking of Corian® against natural or engineered stone.
Joie from Humphrey Homes explained the design team’s view this way: “Corian® can be used in some situations that natural stone or engineered stone cannot. Fluted details are particularly very difficult in brittle products, whereas Corian® really lends itself to this finish.” The statement is attributed only to Joie; the project page does not give a fuller name or role.
In practical design terms, the material decision joined two goals that could otherwise pull in different directions. Witch Hazel supplied the subdued colour and tactile finish needed for a natural, coastal palette, while the material was also selected for the shaped and fluted treatment planned for the island. The team was therefore choosing a surface for both its appearance and its suitability for the intended form.

The island’s curved, fluted construction
The island is the kitchen’s most distinctive piece. Its front and sides carry a custom fluted detail, and those surfaces curve rather than meeting as simple straight panels. This combination of repeated grooves and changing direction made fabrication a significant part of the design process.
Sampling the flute size
The team produced multiple samples and tried different fluting sizes before committing to the final treatment. The purpose was not merely to compare visual styles. They needed to see how the grooves behaved as the material was heated and curved, and to check that the fluting would not open during that process.

The project team’s testing addressed whether the grooves would remain visually coherent and structurally closed after heating and bending.
This is why the fluting is integral to the design rather than an after-the-fact decorative layer. The island’s shape, the choice of Witch Hazel and the groove pattern were developed together. The time spent on samples was part of achieving the intended luxury aesthetic, not an indication that a standard prefabricated component was installed.

How the finish supports a calm, luxurious interior
Luxury in this kitchen comes from restraint and resolution rather than from a high-contrast statement colour. The sandy tone sits close to the natural hues of the surrounding environment, and the satin finish avoids a hard glare that could distract from the coast beyond. The Swanbourne project offers a useful process lesson for anyone considering curved fluting, while leaving the technical recipe open. A comparable installation should be treated as a design-and-fabrication exercise that begins well before the final sheet is ordered.
- Set the visual brief. Establish how the surface colour, sheen and cabinetry will relate to the site or room. For a coastal palette, review the colour beside the actual oak, lacquer and flooring rather than relying on a small digital image.
- Request physical samples. Compare Witch Hazel or the chosen colour under the room’s daylight and artificial lighting. Include a plain sample and a fluted sample so the change in shadow is visible.
- Test the flute profile. Ask the fabricator to make several groove sizes and spacings. The Swanbourne team used multiple samples because the apparent scale of the pattern changes when it wraps a curved edge.
- Trial the heating and bending sequence. Confirm that the proposed process keeps the grooves closed and consistent through the curve. The source does not establish a universal temperature or machine setting, so the fabricator must validate the method for the specific design.
- Review the complete mock-up. Inspect a representative corner or curved section, not only a short straight strip. Check the alignment of the flutes at the front-to-side transition and how the satin finish reads across changing angles.
- Approve a documented sample. Record the selected profile, orientation, colour and finish before full production. This gives the design team and fabricator a shared reference if adjustments are needed.
These steps do not guarantee that another project will reproduce the Swanbourne result. They reflect the project team’s documented approach of sampling and trialling the detail before fabrication.

The available project material supports conclusions about appearance, shaping and the team’s design rationale. It does not provide independent performance testing, maintenance results, repair history, cost data or a systematic comparison with natural or engineered stone.

The residence was a private home that opened to the public for two weekends. CASF reports that more than 1,000 people visited during that period and that the response to the kitchen was overwhelmingly positive, particularly to the fluted island. The project page does not state the year of those openings.
That visitor figure describes attendance at the temporary public opening, not a performance measurement or a survey of all visitors. It does, however, indicate that the island became a memorable feature for people experiencing the completed interior in person.
How to evaluate Witch Hazel for your own island
Start with the room, not the colour name
Witch Hazel’s sandy appearance will change with surrounding colours and light. Place a physical sample beside the cabinetry, wall finishes and flooring, then view it at morning, midday and evening. A warm surface can appear lighter or deeper depending on the adjacent timber and the direction of daylight.

Decide whether the fluting is structural to the concept
If the island’s identity depends on a continuous fluted curve, involve a capable solid-surface fabricator at the design stage. Ask what sample size is needed to test the tightest curve and the most visible junction. If the fluting is only a small accent, a simpler straight application may reduce fabrication complexity, but that would be a different design from the Swanbourne island.
Specify the finish together with the profile
A satin surface and a fluted profile do not read independently. Grooves create additional shadow, while the finish controls how the ridges catch light. Approve them as one sample rather than choosing a colour first and adding texture later.

Use a physical sample to assess Witch Hazel in the intended room, then take the chosen finish and a proposed flute profile to a local fabricator for feasibility review. The available project information does not establish marketplace availability, a price or an affiliate arrangement for samples.
A useful brief should include the island plan, the tightest curve, the locations where fluting turns a corner, the desired satin appearance and the cabinetry materials that will sit beside it.
