The practical design choice is not simply a decorative style: match the profile’s scale, exact section, timber and finish to the room, then confirm current stock, lengths, quotation and delivery before ordering.

What Annandale Timber & Moulding can supply
Annandale Timber & Moulding manufactures and supplies timber mouldings, including cornices and chair rails. Its operations information describes a range of about 150 stock mouldings, with custom production available when a project needs a different section or an exact match. Stock mouldings are mostly finger-jointed Hoop Pine. The supplier says this timber is clear of knots and suited to painting. Those are the supplier’s descriptions; they are not independent performance tests, so confirm the required grade and finish for a particular project.

Stock profiles and made-to-order work
A stock profile can reduce lead time and simplify quoting, but the available length, finish and quantity still need checking. If an existing house has damaged or missing moulding, Annandale says it can match a customer’s physical sample or an accurate cross-section drawing. When the required cutter does not exist, custom tooling may be quoted.
Why the exact section matters
Two mouldings can both be called a cornice or chair rail while producing very different visual results. Face width, projection, height, edge shape and the way the profile meets the wall or ceiling determine how large it appears after painting. Specify the section and its dimensions rather than ordering by a profile name alone.
Cornice and chair rail: different jobs, different visual rules
Cornice at the ceiling line
A cornice bridges the junction between wall and ceiling. Its profile can make a room feel more formally framed, create a stronger shadow line or provide a quiet transition in a contemporary interior. A larger section has more visual weight and needs enough wall and ceiling area to look intentional. In a compact room, a smaller section generally keeps the ceiling line from dominating; in a tall room, a deeper profile can hold its own against the extra volume.

A chair rail is a horizontal moulding fixed around a wall, traditionally at a height related to furniture and wall protection. In current interiors it can also divide two paint colours, separate a feature treatment from a plain upper wall or create a linear datum through several rooms. The rail’s height and projection should relate to skirting boards, door architraves and other trim so the wall does not acquire several competing horizontal lines.

Use the two together
Using a cornice and chair rail in one scheme does not require identical profiles. A restrained cornice can sit comfortably with a more pronounced chair rail, provided their scale and finish are coordinated. Conversely, matching their visual weight can create a deliberately traditional envelope. The available catalogue should be reviewed before making a style decision; the information available here does not establish a complete illustrated list or rank one profile as more attractive than another.
Representative profiles and dimensions
The following examples show why profile names are not interchangeable. Dimensions and standard lengths are the supplier’s listed figures.

CO-71 is listed with a 64 × 60 mm section, while CH-444 is listed at 60 × 15 mm. The first number should not be treated as a universal definition of “width” across every manufacturer’s catalogue; confirm the supplier’s cross-section drawing when orientation or cutting accuracy matters. Their different standard lengths also affect take-off, joins and waste.

One profile, carefully scaled
Choose one cornice profile for the principal rooms and let paint, lighting and furniture provide variation. This approach is useful when the house needs continuity or when several rooms share the same ceiling height. Select the section after checking how much projection can be accommodated at cornices, door openings and built-in joinery.

Layered visual hierarchy
A room can use a more substantial cornice in formal or public spaces and a smaller section in bedrooms or service areas. Keep the transition deliberate: changes should occur at a doorway, corridor or another architectural break rather than mid-wall. Because the complete current profile range is not established here, obtain the illustrated catalogue before selecting a hierarchy of shapes.
Painted contrast
Raw finger-jointed Hoop Pine is described as suitable for painting. A cornice painted with the ceiling can visually extend the ceiling plane; a cornice painted with the wall can make the junction quieter. A chair rail can match the trim, contrast with both wall zones or act as the dividing colour. Test the chosen colours and sheen on a sample because the same profile reads differently in strong side light and low ambient light.
Two-tone wall divisions
Use a chair rail as the boundary between two related colours, a darker lower wall and lighter upper wall, or a painted wall and another finish. Keep the rail’s section visible by allowing the paint edges to follow its arrises cleanly. The design should be coordinated with skirting and architraves rather than treated as an isolated stripe.
Repair and replication
For heritage repairs or extensions, an exact profile match usually looks more coherent than substituting a superficially similar moulding. A small physical sample is preferable. If no sample can be removed, prepare a precise cross-section drawing with all dimensions and identify which face is exposed. Annandale says it can use that information to assess a match and quote custom tooling if necessary.

Material and finish decisions
Raw finger-jointed Hoop Pine
The standard raw finger-jointed Hoop Pine mouldings described in the FAQ are strictly for interior use. Do not assume that an interior stock profile is suitable for an exterior, damp or unusually exposed location. Confirm material, treatment and finish requirements with the supplier before specifying anything outside normal interior conditions.
Painting
The operations page says stock mouldings are mostly clear of knots and suited to painting. The listed examples are raw and unprimed, so the painter should allow for the project’s agreed preparation and coating system rather than treating “raw” as factory-finished. Confirm whether a particular batch, custom run or replacement length is supplied raw, primed or otherwise finished.
Polished or stained timber
For a clear, polished or stained appearance, the supplier says mouldings can be run to order in a chosen timber, subject to minimum order levels. Ask which species are available, whether the run is finger-jointed or clear-length material, how colour consistency will be handled and what finish state is included in the quotation.

- Remove uncertainty about orientation. Photograph the installed moulding in place and mark the wall, ceiling, top and bottom faces on a sketch.
- Provide a physical sample when possible. The FAQ identifies a small sample as the most useful starting point for matching.
- Otherwise draw the cross-section accurately. Include every face, step, radius and angle, plus exact height, projection and width dimensions.
- Identify the required timber and finish. State whether the replacement will be painted, polished or stained and whether it is for interior use.
- Ask whether an existing cutter is available. If not, request a quotation for custom tooling and clarify minimum quantities.
- Approve a sample or section before production. Compare the proposed profile against the installed piece at eye level and under the room’s normal lighting.
A practical specification workflow for a painting project
- Survey the rooms. Record ceiling height, wall lengths, openings, corners and any areas where the moulding stops or changes.
- Choose the visual scale. Compare the profile’s section with skirting, architraves, cabinetry and furniture; do not choose on a catalogue name alone.
- Calculate required lengths. Add each wall or run, note internal and external corners, and allow for cutting strategy and unavoidable waste. The 4.8 m CO-71 and 5.4 m CH-444 standard lengths may produce different joint patterns.
- Decide on finish before ordering. A paint-grade stock profile and a stain-grade custom run may require different timber, preparation and minimum quantities.
- Confirm stock and lead time. Ask for the current quantity, exact lengths available, batch consistency and whether the requested profile is stock or made to order.
- Request a written quote. Have the quote identify profile code, section dimensions, timber, finish, quantity, tooling, collection or freight and any applicable minimum order.
- Plan delivery or collection. Verify packaging, vehicle access, unloading responsibility and protection of long lengths before the order is released.
Pickup and delivery information to verify
The FAQ says stock pickup is usually available the same day. It also says Sydney metropolitan delivery is next day for qualifying orders placed before 9 a.m., while the operations information says the supplier’s transport partners currently serve Sydney Metro. These are operational services and can change with stock, cutoff time, route and order size.

Customers outside the stated Sydney Metro service area may need to arrange their own freight. Before paying, confirm the current service area, dispatch date, transport charge, long-length handling and whether someone must be present to receive the moulding. A delivery promise should not be assumed from an older quotation or a previous order.
Common specification mistakes and their fixes
- Ordering by a familiar name only: write the profile code and exact section, then approve a cross-section or sample.
- Assuming similar dimensions mean a visual match: compare the actual contour, projection and edge details.
- Using interior stock in an exposed location: ask for a material and treatment specifically suitable for that environment.
- Forgetting finish requirements: state raw, primed, painted, polished or stained expectations in the quote.
- Ignoring standard lengths: set out joints and cutting before ordering 4.8 m or 5.4 m lengths.
- Measuring only straight walls: include corners, returns, openings and damaged sections that need replacement.
- Assuming every profile is immediately available: confirm live stock and whether custom production or tooling is required.
- Leaving freight until the last minute: long timber needs a transport plan, especially outside Sydney Metro.
Questions to put on the quote request
A useful enquiry should include the profile code or sample, total quantity, preferred lengths, timber species, finish, project location and required date. Ask for confirmation of the finished section, current stock, minimum order, tooling charge if applicable, collection timing, delivery availability and freight cost. If the moulding is being painted, ask whether the supplied surface is raw and unprimed so the painting schedule can allow for preparation.

Final design decision
Start with the room’s proportions and the relationship between cornice, chair rail and existing trim. Then specify the exact section, not just a descriptive style. CO-71 at 64 × 60 mm and CH-444 at 60 × 15 mm demonstrate how differently scaled the two categories can be, while their 4.8 m and 5.4 m standard lengths affect cutting and waste. For a painted interior, the supplier’s raw finger-jointed Hoop Pine stock may be appropriate; for stained or polished work, discuss a made-to-order species and minimum quantity.
