The best corrosion-resistant metal depends on the site, not a universal ranking. Classify the atmosphere using Australian corrosion guidance, then check the local microclimate, water paths, dissimilar-metal contacts, finish and maintenance access. In marine or severe marine air, 316 stainless steel is commonly selected; aluminium suits many atmospheres when pitting and incompatible connections are controlled; zinc-coated or hot-dip-galvanized steel can be economical when its coating system matches the exposure; and weathering steel needs conditions that allow a stable protective patina.

Australian building sites can range from dry inland air to salt-laden spray at a surf beach, with industrial contaminants and sheltered, persistently damp details adding further variation. A metal that performs well on an inland wall may stain, pit or lose its protective coating on a coastal roof. The reliable method is to assess corrosivity first and select the material, grade, coating and detailing as one system.

Start with atmospheric corrosivity, not a distance-from-the-sea rule

Australian Steel Institute guidance identifies AS/NZS 2312 as the basis for choosing steel protection systems by corrosivity environment and other design factors. AS 4312 distinguishes rural, industrial and marine exposure and gives atmospheric corrosion information for several metals. The NCC 2022 Housing Provisions also provide exposure descriptions and minimum coating systems for structural steel and sheet roofing.

Use a broad location category only as an initial screen. Local severity can change with:

  • breaking surf, salt spray and prevailing wind direction;
  • sheltered bays, headlands and site topography;
  • building faces that stay damp or receive little washing rain;
  • industrial gases, dusts and deposits;
  • crevices, ledges and horizontal surfaces that retain wet contamination; and
  • the way one material drains onto another.

For a project specification, confirm the current edition of each applicable standard and the requirements in the relevant state or territory. NSW Government guidance for corrosion protection of steel posts likewise recommends determining the corrosivity and developing protection to suit it, rather than relying on a generic product choice.

Material choices at a glance

Material or system Where it is commonly considered Critical limitations and detailing checks
316 stainless steel Marine and severe marine atmospheres; compatible exposed stainless assemblies Chlorides, iron contamination, rough finishes, crevices and poor washing can cause staining or pitting.
304 stainless steel and ferritic stainless grades Less aggressive atmospheres where the selected grade and finish are suitable Rough-finished 304 and ferritic grades can stain in marine environments; grade alone does not remove contamination or crevice risk.
Commercial aluminium alloys Many rural, urban and marine applications when alloy, finish and connections are designed appropriately Protective oxide film does not prevent all pitting; runoff and contact with other metals can create local attack.
Zinc-coated or hot-dip-galvanized steel Rural and moderate environments, and other exposures where coating thickness and system are specified for the design life Zinc consumption increases in industrial and marine air. Edges, cut areas, trapped water and unsuitable paint systems reduce protection.
Weathering steel Sites where repeated wetting and drying allow a stable protective patina and drainage can be controlled Conventional weathering steel is not recommended near breaking surf or at C4 and higher corrosivity; runoff can stain adjacent work.
Copper and copper alloys Rural, industrial and marine atmospheres where ammonia or ammonium contamination is not present Runoff can corrode aluminium, zinc-coated steel and other vulnerable materials even when the copper itself performs well.

316 stainless steel: the usual marine choice, not a guarantee

Stainless steel depends on a passive surface film. Chloride deposits and metallic iron dust can disrupt that protection, producing tea-coloured staining or, in harsher conditions, pitting. AS 4312 material notes that 316 is normally selected for marine and severe marine environments, while rough-finished 304 and some ferritic grades can stain in marine air.

When 316 makes sense

  • Exposed fixings and components in marine or severe marine atmospheres when the adjoining assembly is also compatible stainless steel.
  • Locations where chloride deposition is expected and a more resistant grade is justified by the design.
  • Assemblies that can be detailed for drainage, inspection and washing.

What still causes failures

A 316 designation does not override bad geometry. Tight crevices, deposits beneath washers, stagnant water, fabrication contamination and iron particles from cutting or grinding can all produce local corrosion. Smooth finishes generally clean more readily than rough ones, and regular washing can reduce salt accumulation. Specify fabrication, finishing and cleaning requirements together with the grade.

For a narrow product need, 316 stainless screws are a defensible option for compatible marine-exposed stainless assemblies. Do not use stainless fasteners indiscriminately in aluminium or zinc-coated roof and wall products: direct contact and runoff can create galvanic corrosion.

Aluminium: broad atmospheric resistance with pitting and compatibility risks

Commercial aluminium alloys form a protective oxide film. Standards Australia describes it this way: “Aluminium forms a very resistant oxide film which provides protection in a wide range of atmospheres.” That makes aluminium useful across many Australian environments, but the film is not an assurance against every form of attack.

Specify the whole aluminium system

  • Choose the alloy and product form for the structural and exposure requirements; Australian standards cover aluminium sheet, plate and extrusions.
  • Consider anodising, paint or other surface treatment where the appearance, chloride load or maintenance plan warrants it.
  • Provide drainage so water and contaminated deposits do not remain in joints.
  • Isolate aluminium from incompatible metals and prevent aggressive runoff from upstream copper or lead.

Pitting can be local and difficult to see until section loss has occurred. Inspect concealed joints, fastener holes and low points rather than judging performance from broad flat surfaces alone.

Zinc-coated and hot-dip-galvanized steel: protection depends on the coating specification

Zinc protects steel sacrificially, so a zinc coating can continue protecting small exposed areas while it is being consumed. Its corrosion rate rises in industrial and marine atmospheres, however. Australian Steel Institute guidance directs designers to AS/NZS 2312 when selecting paint systems or hot-dip galvanizing for a stated corrosivity and design life.

Questions the specification must answer

  • What atmospheric corrosivity applies to the actual site and the most exposed faces?
  • What coating type and thickness are required for the component, geometry and intended service life?
  • How will cut edges, welds, bolted joints and concealed surfaces be protected?
  • Will the galvanized or zinc-coated surface receive a compatible paint system, and has surface preparation been defined?
  • Can water, salt or industrial dust become trapped against the coating?

The NCC 2022 Housing Provisions show that minimum coating requirements vary with exposure for structural steel members and sheet roofing. A statement such as “galvanized is corrosion-proof” omits the variables that determine service life: coating mass or thickness, exposure, geometry, wetness and maintenance.

Weathering steel: use only where the patina can become protective

Weathering steel is designed to develop a relatively stable patina through repeated wetting and drying. That patina is not automatic: continuous salt deposition, persistent dampness and poor drainage can keep corrosion active.

The HERA Weathering Steel Design Guide, Revision 2 (June 2025), warns against conventional weathering steel near breaking surf and recommends against its use at C4 or higher corrosivity. The guide calls for both macroclimate and microclimate assessment. Any distance guidance in such a guide is a screening aid, not a substitute for checking wind, salt deposition, shelter, wetting and drainage at the actual site.

Design issues beyond atmospheric exposure

  • Detail ledges and joints so they dry rather than hold water.
  • Control runoff: rust-coloured staining can mark concrete, paving, render and lighter cladding.
  • Keep drainage away from vulnerable materials and provide access for inspection.
  • Do not assume a weathering appearance means corrosion has stopped; confirm that the exposure supports a protective patina.

Copper: durable in many atmospheres, troublesome as an upstream metal

AS 4312 material describes copper and copper alloys as resistant in rural, industrial and marine atmospheres except where ammonia or ammonium compounds contaminate the air. Corrosion is largely uniform tarnishing. That durability can hide a compatibility problem: copper runoff carries ions onto downstream aluminium, zinc-coated steel and other susceptible surfaces.

Before using copper gutters, flashings or decorative elements above another metal, map the complete water path. A material can be suitable on its own and still damage the roof, wall or fasteners below it.

Prevent galvanic corrosion through detailing

Galvanic corrosion occurs when dissimilar metals are electrically connected while an electrolyte, usually rainwater or condensation, is present. YourHome identifies direct contact and water flowing from one metal onto another as common roofing and cladding risks. It specifically warns that copper or lead runoff can corrode aluminium, zinc-coated steel and pre-finished steel products, and cautions against stainless steel or copper-containing fasteners with those products.

Controls that work in practice

  1. Separate incompatible metals. Use a non-conductive physical separator where the design permits, and ensure the separator remains effective after installation.
  2. Choose compatible fasteners. Match the fastener material, washers and sealants to the roof, wall or frame rather than choosing a corrosion-resistant screw in isolation.
  3. Break the runoff path. Prevent copper or lead from draining onto aluminium or zinc-coated steel; use independent gutters, diverters or a compatible transition detail.
  4. Eliminate wet crevices. Avoid pockets that trap salt, dust and condensation, and provide drainage at laps and interfaces.
  5. Protect cut and fabricated areas. Follow the specified coating repair or finishing procedure for edges, welds and drilled holes.
  6. Make inspection possible. A concealed connection that cannot be washed or checked is a higher-risk connection in a marine or industrial atmosphere.

How painters and coating contractors should approach the selection

Painting is part of the corrosion system, not a cosmetic last step. A coating can add barrier protection to steel, aluminium or galvanized steel, but only when the substrate, preparation, primer, intermediate coats, topcoat and environmental exposure are compatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Record the substrate and existing coating before preparation; galvanized steel, weathering steel and aluminium require different preparation decisions.
  • Specify the protection system through the applicable corrosion standard rather than naming only a colour or generic “anti-rust paint.”
  • Check edges, welds, fastener heads, laps and drainage points separately from broad faces.
  • Prevent contamination between preparation and coating, particularly salt and iron dust on stainless steel.
  • Confirm that a proposed paint system is suitable over zinc coatings or aluminium and that the required preparation has been completed.
  • Coordinate masking, sealants and dissimilar-metal separators so painting does not bridge a detail intended to remain electrically isolated.

For galvanized or zinc-coated steel, the coating thickness, exposure class and repair method must be documented. For weathering steel, painting over the surface changes the intended patina system and should not be treated as a routine substitute for correct exposure selection.

A practical selection process for an Australian project

  1. Describe the site. Note inland, urban, industrial, coastal, sheltered-bay or surf exposure, prevailing winds, topography and faces that remain damp.
  2. Assign the corrosivity. Use the current AS 4312 and AS/NZS 2312 information, NCC provisions and project-specific advice; do not rely only on kilometres from the shoreline.
  3. Define the component. Roof sheet, wall cladding, fastener, structural post, handrail and decorative trim may need different materials or coating systems.
  4. Choose grade or coating. Consider 316 stainless for appropriate marine stainless assemblies, aluminium where its pitting and connection risks are controlled, zinc protection where the coating specification suits the exposure, or weathering steel only where a stable patina is realistic.
  5. Draw every water path. Identify upstream metals, gutters, flashings, condensate and splash zones before approving the material.
  6. Resolve interfaces. Select compatible fasteners, separators, washers, sealants and transition details.
  7. Set finish and maintenance requirements. Smooth, washable surfaces and accessible drainage can outperform a nominally superior material that traps deposits.
  8. Document verification. Record the standard edition, exposure basis, coating thickness or grade, preparation method and inspection responsibilities.

What to choose in common Australian conditions

Dry inland or low-contamination rural site

Aluminium, suitable stainless grades and zinc-coated or galvanized steel may all be viable. The decision usually turns on structural role, appearance, coating life, cost and connection details rather than a need for the most marine-resistant grade. Dust traps and occasional wetting still require drainage and inspection.

Coastal suburb away from direct surf

Assess prevailing wind, shelter and salt deposition rather than applying a single coastal distance rule. 316 stainless is commonly considered for exposed stainless components. Aluminium can perform well when pitting, finish and dissimilar-metal contacts are controlled. Zinc-coated steel needs a coating system selected for the assessed marine exposure.

Headland, beachfront or breaking-surf zone

Treat salt deposition and wetting as severe. Give particular attention to 316 grade, smooth finish, washing access and crevice avoidance. Do not assume conventional weathering steel is suitable; the 2025 HERA guide warns against its use near breaking surf.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Industrial atmosphere

Identify the contaminants, wetness and sheltered faces. Zinc consumption can be higher than in rural air, and copper is unsuitable where ammonia or ammonium compounds contaminate the atmosphere. Select steel coatings through the corrosivity-based process in AS/NZS 2312.

Mixed-metal roof or façade

Compatibility and runoff may govern the outcome more than the nominal corrosion resistance of any one sheet. Map copper, lead, aluminium, zinc-coated steel and stainless components, then isolate incompatible contacts and redirect aggressive runoff before installation.

Maintenance and inspection priorities

Set a written inspection and cleaning plan that reflects the exposure and the consequences of failure. Look for salt or industrial deposits, tea-coloured stainless staining, pits in aluminium, white corrosion products on zinc, damaged coating at edges and rust-coloured weathering-steel runoff. Check concealed laps, fasteners and low points, not only visible panels. When a defect appears, identify the water path and dissimilar-metal contact before repainting; a new topcoat will not correct an active galvanic couple or trapped wet deposit.

Bottom line

Choose corrosion-resistant metal by exposure class and detailing, not by a universal “best metal” list. 316 stainless is a strong marine candidate for compatible assemblies; aluminium offers broad atmospheric resistance when pitting and interfaces are managed; zinc coatings and galvanizing work when their thickness and coating system match the environment; copper is durable but can create damaging runoff; and weathering steel belongs only where the site can support a protective patina. The longest-lasting result comes from combining the right material with compatible fasteners, controlled water paths, sound coating preparation and a maintenance plan.
