Corrugated hemp panels are thin, profiled hemp-fibre bio-composite sheets used primarily as rainscreen cladding. The product discussed in building specifications is associated with Margent Farm and supplied through Hemspan: a non-woven hemp fibre mat bound in a bio-resin that includes agricultural residues such as corn cobs, oat hulls and bagasse. It is not hempcrete, corrugated cardboard or a generic name for every hemp board.
What corrugated hemp panels are
The term refers here to a specific corrugated sheet often listed as Corrugated Hemp Fibre Board. Hemp fibres are formed into a non-woven layer and stabilised in a bio-resin matrix. Hemspan and Azure descriptions identify farm-derived feedstocks, including corn cob, oat hulls and bagasse, in that resin. That makes the sheet a hemp-fibre bio-composite; it does not establish that the panel is 100% hemp, resin-free, biodegradable, compostable or carbon-negative.

The corrugation gives a thin sheet stiffness and creates a profile familiar from metal, PVC and bitumen cladding. The NBS Source listing describes it for a rainscreen role analogous to those products. Its documented purpose is to form a visible or concealed cladding layer over a suitable wall build-up, rather than to replace the structural frame, sheathing or insulation.
Future Materials and Hemspan also describe interior wall and ceiling lining, design features and acoustic-treatment applications. Those descriptions indicate possible finish uses, not a structural rating or a guaranteed sound-absorption performance.

The most detailed current listing is the manufacturer-verified NBS Source entry retrieved in 2026. An older technical sheet reports the same principal dimensions. Azure presents the size in rounded centimetres.

Sheet dimensions, profile and mass should be checked against the batch you will receive. Product-directory values are not a substitute for the supplier’s current technical data, fabrication tolerances or project-specific calculations.
Where the panels can be used
Exterior rainscreen cladding
Exterior rainscreen is the clearest documented application. In this arrangement, the hemp sheet is the outer layer of a drained and ventilated façade. The wall behind it must manage structure, insulation, air control and water shedding; the corrugated panel is not the entire weatherproof wall.
Each project needs a compatible support system. The 2.5 mm sheet thickness, corrugation geometry, edge distances, span, wind pressure, fastener type and joint layout determine whether a proposed batten or rail arrangement is adequate. Neither the product descriptions nor the available specification establish structural or load-bearing capacity, so a designer must obtain fixing and span guidance before setting out the façade.

Interior wall and ceiling lining
Hemspan literature and the older technical sheet mention internal wall or ceiling lining and interior design features. Indoors, the panel may be selected for its dark, textured appearance and lightweight handling. Fire, impact, moisture and cleanability requirements still apply to the particular room. A lining application does not automatically make the material suitable for a wet room, escape route or acoustically rated partition.

Acoustic treatment
Future Materials and Hemspan refer to acoustic lining or treatment. That wording does not provide a numerical absorption coefficient, sound-transmission class or reverberation-time result. If acoustic performance is important, require test data for the proposed panel, perforation or backing arrangement rather than extrapolating from the corrugated shape.
Water, UV and weathering: is the panel waterproof?
No. The available product literature notes some water absorption, so “waterproof” is not a supported description. A panel can be intended for rainscreen use while still allowing the façade assembly to rely on laps, flashings, a drained cavity and a water-resistive layer behind it.
Future Materials describes the original dark-chocolate colour becoming lighter under ultraviolet exposure. Hemspan compares the change with timber weathering in sunlight. Expect the appearance to evolve unless the supplier specifies a coating or other finish that controls it. Do not promise colour stability from the uncoated material, and do not assume that a finish designed for one exposure will be approved for another.

- Whether the cavity is continuously drained and ventilated for the local climate.
- Which fasteners, washers, trims and sealants are compatible with the bio-composite.
- How cut edges are treated, if edge sealing is required, and how movement is accommodated.
- What cleaning, recoating or replacement procedure applies after UV and wetting cycles.
A rainscreen designation describes intended function within an assembly; it does not certify every detail as weather-tight in every jurisdiction.
Fire classification and certification need checking
Published fire information is inconsistent, so a single unqualified fire class would be misleading. The documents available for this product state:

- Whether the result applies to the bare sheet or to a tested wall or rainscreen assembly.
- Which edition of BS EN 13501-1 and which national building regulations govern the project.
- Whether the certificate covers the intended orientation, cavity, insulation and fixing arrangement.
A product class alone does not prove compliance of a complete façade. The project fire engineer or building-control professional should review the evidence for the actual assembly and jurisdiction.
Expected life and environmental claims
NBS lists an expected life of 60 years. That is the directory’s stated expectation, not a warranty, service-life guarantee or independently verified lifespan in the documents reviewed. No test protocol, maintenance schedule or independent service-life study is supplied with that figure. Treat it as a specification claim to be confirmed with the manufacturer, especially for severe coastal, industrial or high-UV exposure.
The bio-resin feedstocks and hemp content may be relevant to a project’s material strategy, but the available descriptions do not provide a complete life-cycle assessment, embodied-carbon total, recycling route or end-of-life certification. Compare verified environmental declarations and disposal requirements rather than relying on broad “eco” language.

- Define the application. Record whether the panel is an exterior rainscreen, an interior lining, a ceiling feature or an acoustic treatment. The required fire, moisture, impact and cleaning performance changes with the location.
- Obtain current documents. Ask Margent Farm or Hemspan for the latest technical sheet, installation details, profile drawing, finishes, fire report, certification scope, expected-life assumptions and maintenance guidance.
- Coordinate the wall build-up. Set the structural sheathing, insulation, air barrier, water-resistive layer, cavity depth, ventilation paths and drainage before laying out the visible corrugation.
- Engineer supports and fixings. Check wind loads, spans, edge distances, pull-out resistance, thermal movement and the compatibility of fasteners and washers. Do not infer capacity from the 3.9 kg sheet weight.
- Detail openings and transitions. Draw corners, parapets, sills, heads, bases, penetrations and changes of material. Provide replaceable trims and a way to inspect or renew seals.
- Plan cutting and handling. Confirm approved tools, dust control, edge treatment, storage conditions and lifting limits. Keep sheets dry and supported until installation instructions are available.
- Review appearance. Install a sample panel or mock-up that can be observed through a season. Agree how the initial brown colour and later UV lightening will be accepted.
- Document handover information. Give the owner the panel batch, fixing schedule, fire evidence, cleaning method, inspection intervals and supplier contact details.
How to compare corrugated hemp with other cladding
No apples-to-apples cost or performance study is provided, so it is not defensible to rank this sheet universally above or below metal, fibre-cement, PVC, bitumen or timber. Use the same questions for every candidate:

The product is associated with Margent Farm and Hemspan, and NBS records UK material origin and manufacture. The available information does not establish a current price, stock position, minimum order, delivery territory or consumer retail channel. These sheets are specialist building products rather than a standard hardware-store item.
When requesting a quotation, send the supplier your location, estimated area, profile, colour or finish requirement, substrate, fire jurisdiction and desired delivery date. Ask whether production is made to order, how many spare sheets are recommended, and whether matching trims and replacement panels are available. Confirm all commercial details at the time of order because availability and certification status can change.
Maintenance and replacement planning
Use only the cleaning agents, pressure limits and coatings approved for the supplied panel. A generic façade-cleaning regime could stain the bio-resin or alter the surface sheen. Inspect after severe storms and at the intervals specified by the designer, looking for loose fixings, cracked or damaged sheets, blocked cavity openings, failed flashings and water marks on the backing wall.
Because UV exposure can lighten the original colour, replacement panels installed years later may not match older weathered sheets. Retain the product identification and, where practical, spare material from the same production run. Replace damaged sheets using the approved fixing and joint detail rather than sealing over a crack and assuming the rainscreen function has been restored.

Corrugated hemp panels can be a distinctive lower-impact design choice when their limits are designed in: they are thin bio-composite sheets for a properly engineered rainscreen or lining, not a structural board or automatically waterproof envelope. The decisive documents are the current product specification, the fire evidence for the supplied version and assembly, and the installation details for the project’s climate and building regulations.
