Cosmofin is a family of PVC waterproofing membranes and compatible detailing components, not one universal sheet. The correct choice depends on the exact regional product, whether the roof is exposed or covered, how the membrane will be attached, the substrate, reinforcement or fleece construction, and the details at edges, penetrations and drains.
The phrase “economical solution” is a marketing position rather than an established cost finding. The available manufacturer and supplier material does not provide like-for-like installed prices, lifecycle-cost analysis or independently measured service life against other waterproofing systems. Treat economics as a project-specific calculation, not a guaranteed property of the Cosmofin name.

Cosmofin is a product family based on flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) sheets for waterproofing roofs and related building elements. The family includes membrane variants with different reinforcement, backing and intended attachment methods, along with components for junctions and penetrations. A specification therefore needs the complete system designation, not simply “Cosmofin membrane.”
BMI Group’s brochure shows a range that includes Cosmofin GF fleeceback, Cosmofin G and FM variants, plus reinforced strip, unreinforced flashing, walkway membrane, outlets, pipe and cable details, corners, coated metal and adhesives. Thicknesses and roll dimensions differ by product. A component shown in a brochure is not automatically interchangeable with every membrane in the family; confirm compatibility in the current regional technical documentation.

In the United Kingdom, BMI identifies EN 13956 as the harmonised standard for plastic and rubber roof-waterproofing sheets. That standard reference describes the product category; it does not by itself approve every Cosmofin variant for every roof build-up or exposure condition.
Which Cosmofin variants are documented?
Product names and configurations vary between regional catalogues. The UK BMI range and the Australian Projex offering should not be merged as if their SKUs, dimensions or approvals were identical.
| Variant or catalogue reference | Construction and documented use | Attachment or welding information | Figures and limits stated in the cited material |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cosmofin GF (BMI UK) | Glass-reinforced, fleeceback PVC membrane for exposed, fully adhered roofing systems. | Fully adhered; installers are directed to follow BMI guidance. | 1.5 mm thick; 2.120 m × 15 m roll listed by BMI. These are product specifications, not comparative performance data. |
| Cosmofin FG (BMI UK) | Polyester-reinforced PVC membrane for exposed mechanically fixed systems; BMI also describes it as usable as a detailing sheet with GF. | Mechanically fixed in the documented roof application; detailing use must follow the system detail. | Exact dimensions and thickness were not stated in the cited product description. |
| Cosmofin G and FM (BMI brochure) | Named family variants shown at different thicknesses and roll dimensions. | Attachment method depends on the selected configuration and system specification. | Individual values must be taken from the current regional brochure; no single G or FM specification should be assumed. |
| Cosmofin F (Projex technical sheet, March 2021) | Unreinforced PVC membrane used to form structural details. | Identified as hot-weldable and solvent-weldable in that sheet. | The document is dated March 2021; verify that the current data sheet still applies before specifying. |
| Cosmofin D (BMI brochure) | Variant identified by BMI as welded. | Welded system; the exact welding and detailing instructions are product-specific. | Detailed dimensions and application limits were not stated in the cited summary. |
| Projex Australian Cosmofin variants | Supplier describes versions with or without fleece backing for roofs and other waterproofing locations. | May support bonded, loose-laid, ballasted or mechanically fastened applications, depending on the system. | Confirm the exact SKU, approvals and construction before treating any listed use as suitable. |
Where can Cosmofin membrane be used?
Exposed roof systems
BMI’s UK descriptions distinguish between an exposed, fully adhered GF build-up and an exposed, mechanically fixed FG build-up. The distinction affects wind-load design, substrate preparation, perimeter restraint, detailing and the sequence of work. A designer should specify the attachment method together with the membrane rather than leaving installers to infer it from the brand.
Covered, ballasted and loose-laid systems
Projex describes its Australian variants as capable of bonded, loose-laid, ballasted or mechanically fastened applications, depending on the selected system. Those statements apply to the regional offering described by Projex; they are not proof that every GF, FG, G, FM, F or D sheet can be used in all four ways.

Podiums, balconies and below-ground locations
The Projex page names roofs, podiums, balconies, planter boxes, courtyards, terraces, basements, lift pits and retaining walls. These locations have different hydrostatic, traffic, protection, drainage and access conditions. Use the listed application as a starting point for checking documentation, not as a blanket approval. A roof membrane detail cannot simply be copied into a basement or retaining-wall design.
How to select the right Cosmofin system
- Define the exposure. Record whether the membrane will remain exposed, be covered by insulation or paving, receive ballast, or sit below ground. Exposure determines protection, access and detailing requirements.
- Choose the attachment strategy. Decide whether the documented design calls for full adhesion, mechanical fixing, loose laying or ballast. Confirm that the exact regional product is approved for that method.
- Check construction. Compare fleece backing, glass reinforcement, polyester reinforcement and unreinforced detailing grades. Do not substitute a sheet because its thickness appears similar.
- Confirm substrate compatibility. Identify the deck, insulation, existing waterproofing, falls and surface condition. Obtain the manufacturer’s current substrate and adhesive requirements for the chosen assembly.
- Design the perimeter and penetrations. Review upstands, corners, outlets, pipework, cables, plant bases, movement joints and changes in level. Use compatible strip, flashing, coated metal and outlet details where the system requires them.
- Verify regional approvals. Check the current declaration, standard references, wind or fire requirements where applicable, warranty conditions and any project-specific certification for the country and building type.
- Price the complete build-up. Include substrate preparation, membrane, adhesives or fixings, perimeter work, drainage components, protection, access equipment, welding labour, testing, repairs and future maintenance provisions.
What do the Cosmofin accessories do?
The accessory range matters because most waterproofing failures occur at transitions rather than in an uninterrupted field sheet. BMI’s brochure includes reinforced strip for situations requiring reinforcement, unreinforced flashing for formed details, walkway membrane for designated access routes, outlets for drainage, pipe and cable details, corners, coated metal and adhesives.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →These products should be treated as parts of a documented assembly. For example, an outlet must match the membrane and drainage design; a walkway membrane should define where routine access is expected rather than being scattered as a generic patch; and coated metal trims need the specified welding or bonding detail. Confirm dimensions, compatibility and installation sequence in the current system drawings.
How are Cosmofin seams welded?
The cited documentation supports a professional welding context but does not replace an installation manual. The Projex Cosmofin F technical sheet dated March 2021 identifies that unreinforced detailing membrane as hot- and solvent-weldable. BMI identifies Cosmofin D as welded. These statements establish that compatible welding methods are part of some systems, not that one setting or technique applies to every variant.

A competent installer should use equipment approved or accepted for the selected PVC membrane and follow the current manufacturer procedure. That procedure should control welding temperature, speed, nozzle or roller choice, overlap, seam testing, substrate preparation, weather limits and repair criteria. Do not copy settings from another PVC product or from an old data sheet. The sources do not establish universal temperatures, seam widths or workmanship tolerances, so those values must come from the applicable instructions and training.
High-level installation sequence
- Confirm the issued drawing, product code, revision of the technical data and approved system build-up.
- Inspect the substrate, falls, edges, penetrations and drainage before membrane work begins.
- Install the specified insulation, separator, adhesive, fixings or protection layers in the order required by the system.
- Lay the membrane with the prescribed orientation and allowances, avoiding unplanned creases or trapped contamination.
- Form field seams and detail welds with compatible equipment operated by trained personnel.
- Complete outlets, corners, upstands, pipe and cable penetrations, coated-metal interfaces and walkways using the matching components.
- Visually inspect and test seams according to the manufacturer’s quality procedure, recording repairs and retests.
- Protect the finished membrane from following trades and hand over the as-built details, product records and warranty documentation.
What makes the system economical—or not?
No cited source supplies a comparable installed price for Cosmofin versus another membrane, a lifecycle-cost study or an independently measured service-life comparison. It is therefore not accurate to promise that Cosmofin is cheaper, delivers savings or is the lowest-cost waterproofing option.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteProject economics can move in either direction. A wide roll may reduce the number of field seams in one layout, while a complicated roof with many penetrations may require more detailing labour. Mechanical fixing can alter preparation and labour requirements compared with full adhesion. Below-ground or trafficked locations may need protection, drainage layers and additional access controls that do not appear in a simple membrane price.
Prepare a like-for-like cost schedule containing:
- Membrane area, laps and waste based on the actual roof geometry.
- Adhesive, fasteners, plates, ballast or protection layers required by the selected system.
- Reinforced strips, flashings, outlets, corners, coated metal and penetration details.
- Substrate repairs, moisture control, primers and preparation equipment.
- Trained welding and detailing labour, inspection, testing and remedial allowance.
- Temporary works, access, weather protection and sequencing with other trades.
- Warranty, inspection and maintenance obligations stated by the project specification.
Only after these items are priced for the same area, design life assumptions and performance requirements can a client make a defensible economic comparison.

Common specification mistakes
Assuming the family name defines the product
“Cosmofin” covers multiple constructions and regional catalogues. Write the full product code, thickness, backing or reinforcement, attachment method and approved accessories into the specification.
Mixing UK and Australian descriptions
BMI UK and Projex Australia describe different catalogues and applications. Use the documentation issued for the project’s country, supply chain and warranty, and do not combine one supplier’s accessory with another supplier’s membrane without written compatibility confirmation.
Using a roof detail in a different location
Balconies, planter boxes, lift pits and retaining walls impose conditions that differ from an exposed roof. Require a location-specific detail for hydrostatic pressure, protection, drainage and movement.
Leaving welding to an untrained trade
Seam quality depends on the selected membrane, equipment, environmental conditions and operator technique. Specify trained installation, inspection and repair records rather than relying on a generic “heat weld” note.

Buying on sheet price alone
A membrane roll is only one line in the waterproofing system. Omitting outlets, perimeter work, penetrations, access walkways or testing can make an apparently low quotation incomplete.
Specifier’s approval checklist
- Exact product name and regional supplier identified.
- Thickness, roll size and reinforcement or fleece construction confirmed from the current data sheet.
- Exposed, covered, ballasted, loose-laid, bonded or mechanically fixed use explicitly stated.
- Substrate, insulation, adhesive and fixing compatibility documented.
- EN 13956 reference and other required regional declarations checked.
- Edges, corners, outlets, pipes, cables, movement joints and coated-metal interfaces detailed.
- Welding method, installer competence, seam testing and repair procedure specified.
- Walkway and protection requirements coordinated with maintenance access.
- Warranty conditions and project-specific limitations accepted by the client and installer.
- Complete installed and, where required, lifecycle cost compared on an equivalent basis.
Bottom line for architects and contractors
Cosmofin can be a suitable PVC waterproofing system when the exact variant, attachment method, regional approval and detailing package match the building design. BMI’s UK information clearly separates fleeceback, fully adhered GF from mechanically fixed FG, while Projex’s Australian material describes a broader set of attachment methods and applications for its own variants. The manufacturer’s current instructions govern welding and workmanship.

Specify the system rather than the brand alone, and treat “economical” as a claim that still needs project-specific costing. Without comparable installed or lifecycle evidence, the responsible decision is to evaluate Cosmofin against alternatives using the same performance brief, details, labour assumptions and warranty requirements.
