Craft room storage ideas: Turn a cluttered room into an easy-to-use workspace

Transform a cluttered craft room by editing your inventory, using a pegboard for frequently used tools, measuring every shelf, storing paper flat, and combining hidden bins with inspiring displays.

A cluttered craft room becomes workable when every supply has a deliberate home: purge first, move frequently used tools onto the wall, keep paper flat, contain small items in drawers, and reserve visible space for inspiration. This approach follows the makeover sequence documented by Better Homes and Gardens Australia, while adapting each idea to your room, wall construction, and the way you actually craft.

1. Empty the room before buying storage

Take everything out of the room, including supplies hidden in drawers, baskets, and boxes. Seeing the full inventory prevents you from buying containers for materials you no longer use. The Australian makeover began with this complete clear-out, followed by decisions about what to donate, sell, discard, or keep.

Sort by what you really have

Make broad groups before making finer categories. Typical groups include sewing supplies, ribbon, paint, fabric, scrapbook paper, tools, finished projects, and albums. Keep like with like during this first pass; you can later divide a group by color, project, or frequency of use.

  • Keep: materials you use, expect to use for a specific project, or need to retain for a clear reason.
  • Donate or sell: duplicates, tools that work but never leave the shelf, and unopened supplies that suit another crafter better.
  • Discard: dried paint, damaged paper, broken tools, and materials that cannot be used safely.

Do not measure shelves or order bins until this edit is complete. The volume and shape of what remains determine whether you need drawers, shelves, wall storage, or a mobile cart.

2. Build zones around the way you craft

Assign a zone to each activity instead of scattering supplies wherever a container happens to fit. A sewing zone might hold fabric, thread, scissors, and measuring tools together. A paper zone can combine scrapbook sheets, albums, adhesives, and cutters. A paint zone should keep bottles upright and place brushes where they are easy to reach.

Use three questions to decide where each item belongs:

  • How often do I use it? Daily tools deserve the closest, most visible locations; seasonal supplies can occupy higher or deeper storage.
  • Does it need a particular orientation? Paper should remain flat, while paint bottles and other liquids should stand upright.
  • Does it need to move? A caddy or cart makes sense for tools used at different tables; fixed storage is better for heavy or rarely moved supplies.

The Home Depot’s craft-room guidance also suggests grouping by type, color, or use and combining shelves, cubes, bins, carts, and vertical storage. Its page is US-oriented, so treat those categories as planning ideas rather than proof that a particular product is available in your area: Craft Room Ideas.

3. Reclaim wall space with a craft room pegboard organizer

A pegboard backsplash turns an otherwise unused wall into adjustable storage. In the makeover, it carried tools and decorative pieces while keeping the work surface clear. Hooks, hanging baskets, racks, and caddies can be moved as your projects change, unlike fixed shelves with predetermined spacing.

Plan the board before you mount it

  1. Measure the wall section, allowing room for the board’s frame or battens and for doors, windows, and work-surface clearance.
  2. Lay the board on the floor and mark approximate positions for scissors, rulers, craft knives, tape, baskets, and frequently used tools.
  3. Keep the most-used items between shoulder and waist height. Put light decorative objects higher and heavier containers lower.
  4. Leave a clear area above the main work zone so the board supports your workflow instead of crowding it.

Paint and install it safely

The makeover instructions propose priming and painting a chosen pattern with cut shapes or a stencil, then applying two thin coats. Spray paint should be used outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, following the product label for ventilation, drying time, and protective equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Attach the board to battens secured into wall studs where possible. For masonry or locations without a suitable stud, select wall plugs and screws rated for the board and the load you intend to hang. Wall construction varies, so use fixings specified for your surface rather than copying a hardware size from another room. Check that every fixing is tight before loading baskets or tools.

Choose hooks and holders by object

  • Use paired hooks for scissors, rulers, and other handled tools.
  • Use shallow baskets or caddies for adhesives, clips, and tools that are awkward to hang individually.
  • Use racks for rolls, narrow containers, or frequently handled materials.
  • Reserve a small section for decorative tape and ribbon so it stays visible without occupying the desk.

4. Keep ribbon and rolls ready to pull

Ribbon becomes difficult to use when it is stacked in a box. A simple under-cabinet rod keeps rolls aligned and lets you pull off the amount you need. The makeover describes fitting closed eyehooks beneath overhead cabinets, sliding ribbon spools onto a metal rod, and resting the rod in the eyehooks.

  1. Measure the distance between the cabinet sides and choose a rod that fits without binding.
  2. Check that the cabinet material can hold the eyehooks and the combined weight of the rod and ribbon.
  3. Position the hooks so the rod is easy to remove when you need to change a spool.
  4. Leave enough clearance for ribbon to unwind without rubbing against the cabinet or wall.

If you rent or cannot drill into cabinets, use a removable holder or keep the rod in a pegboard rack; the goal is controlled, visible dispensing, not a specific hardware system.

5. Measure shelves before choosing containers

Storage fails when a bin is too deep for the shelf, too tall for the opening, or too narrow to use efficiently. Measure the internal width, depth, and height of every shelf and drawer, then record the smallest usable dimension. Include door hinges, drawer runners, and any lip that reduces the opening.

Storage decision Best for Why it works Watch for
Open shelves Frequently used tools and attractive supplies Immediate visibility and access Dust and visual clutter; use consistent containers
Baskets or bins Fabric, soft materials, project kits, and mixed supplies Conceal loose items and pull out as a group Label the outside and avoid overfilling
Small drawers Paint bottles, beads, fasteners, and other small items Separates pieces while using vertical cabinet space Check drawer height against the tallest bottle or tool
Flat shelves Scrapbook paper, cardstock, and other sheets Prevents bending and keeps sizes visible Provide enough clearance to slide paper out without folding
Pegboard hooks and baskets Hand tools and supplies used at the workstation Uses wall area and keeps the desktop clear Use fixings and hardware rated for the load
Cart or caddy Supplies used in more than one location Moves a complete kit to the work surface Wheels and handles need a clear route

Take the measurements with you when shopping. A container that looks compact in a store can waste space if its outside dimensions prevent adjacent bins from fitting.

6. Store paper flat and small supplies upright

Use the space under the desk

Under-desk storage can add capacity without taking another wall. The makeover uses shelves made from melamine sheet resting on metal or plastic pegs to keep paper flat. Set the lowest shelf high enough for your feet and leave a little clearance above each stack so sheets can be removed without scraping.

Sort paper by size or project and keep labels facing the front. Avoid placing heavy tools on top of paper stacks; the pressure can mark or bow sheets.

Give paint its own narrow drawer

A narrow spice drawer can hold paint bottles in rows, making colors visible from above and keeping bottles upright. Measure the bottle height, cap shape, and drawer depth before adapting this idea. If a drawer is not practical, use a shallow bin with dividers and store it at a height where you can read labels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a lowboy for albums and bulky projects

A lowboy with baskets is suitable for scrapbooks and albums because baskets can be pulled out without lifting every item in front. Place the heaviest basket at the bottom and leave a little space above each handle so it can be removed comfortably.

7. Balance hidden storage with visible inspiration

Not every supply needs to be on display. Baskets hide irregular shapes and reduce visual noise, while open shelves can show color-coded materials that help you choose a project quickly. Keep a limited number of attractive or frequently used items visible and conceal the rest behind consistent baskets or doors.

Finished work deserves a separate decision from unfinished supplies. Framing selected artwork turns the room into a personal gallery and gives completed projects a place to live instead of leaving them in a pile. Rotate pieces when you want a fresh look; do not let display space become another storage backlog.

8. Make the workstation comfortable to use

Storage only helps if the desk remains usable. Add a desk lamp that lights the work without casting your hand’s shadow across the project. Route the lamp and tool cords through an opening in the desktop or along the rear edge so cables do not cross the cutting area.

Keep the tools you reach for repeatedly on the pegboard or in the nearest drawer. Place less-used equipment farther away, but avoid putting heavy items above head height. Leave enough knee and elbow room to work without moving baskets every time you sit down.

9. Adapt the plan to a small craft room

In a small room, prioritize storage that increases capacity without blocking circulation. Start with vertical surfaces, the underside of cabinets, and the space under the desk before adding another freestanding unit. A shallow pegboard may hold more useful tools than a deep cabinet that consumes floor area.

  • Choose one primary work surface. Keep it clear enough to start a project immediately.
  • Use height selectively. Put rarely used supplies high, but keep a stable step stool nearby if needed.
  • Prefer nesting or stackable containers. Standardized footprints make future rearrangement easier.
  • Keep mobile storage compact. A slim cart or handled caddy can leave the room when the project is finished.
  • Protect walkways. A storage gain is not worthwhile if drawers or carts prevent the door, window, or chair from operating.

For a room shared with another activity, use labeled bins that can be closed and moved. This preserves the other activity’s floor and work-surface space when crafting stops.

10. Install in an order that prevents rework

  1. Complete the keep-and-remove sort. Do not design around supplies that will leave the room.
  2. Measure walls, shelves, drawers, and the desk. Note obstructions and the direction doors open.
  3. Place the primary work surface. This establishes the reach zone for wall storage and lighting.
  4. Mount the pegboard and any under-cabinet rod. Confirm fixings suit the wall or cabinet before loading them.
  5. Add flat paper shelves and drawers. Fit these to the dimensions of the remaining supplies.
  6. Load by frequency. Put daily tools closest, project-specific kits together, and reserve high or deep storage for occasional use.
  7. Label containers after loading. Labels should describe the contents plainly, such as “adhesives,” “scrap paper,” or “embroidery thread.”
  8. Test a real project. Notice which items you search for, where scraps accumulate, and whether any door, drawer, or chair is obstructed. Adjust the system before adding more containers.

11. Keep the system from becoming clutter again

Give every incoming supply a temporary sorting point. At the end of a project, return tools to their assigned hooks or drawers, recycle unusable scraps, and put unfinished work in one labeled project basket rather than spreading it across the room.

Review the room when a container repeatedly overflows. That usually signals one of three problems: the category is too broad, the container is too small, or the contents include items that should leave. Fix the cause instead of adding another box.

A separate case study from NEAT Method reports that its Nashville craft-room project took six hours and used white plastic storage bins to maximize cabinet space while separating gift categories. That is a description of one project, not a time or capacity benchmark for every room: Before & After: Craft Room.

12. Troubleshoot common storage failures

The pegboard feels crowded

Remove decorative pieces that do not support current work, move occasional tools to a basket, and leave a clear central area above the desk. Reposition hooks instead of adding a second board immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Paper keeps bending

Move it from deep bins to flat shelves, reduce the stack height, and check that the shelf opening is tall enough to slide sheets out without flexing them.

Small items disappear in baskets

Replace one large basket with shallow labeled drawers or smaller containers. Group by function first, then by color only when color genuinely speeds selection.

Supplies are organized but hard to reach

Move high-use items into the reach zone and reserve high shelves for occasional materials. If the same kit travels between surfaces, consolidate it in a caddy or cart.

Wall storage pulls loose

Unload the board, inspect every fixing, and remount it with hardware appropriate to the wall and the total load. Do not compensate for an unsuitable fixing by adding more screws at random.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the finished room should achieve

The goal is not a room filled with containers. It is a workspace where you can see the tools that matter, retrieve supplies without dismantling a pile, protect materials that need to stay flat or upright, and put everything away after a project. Start with the inventory, use the wall and under-desk areas deliberately, measure before purchasing, and let visible display add motivation without replacing practical storage.
