To make a camera bag that fits and carries your kit, measure the camera with its largest lens attached, plan each compartment, then choose a pattern, draft a case, or adapt an existing bag. Build in room for lining, padding, seams, and dividers, and secure the straps and closures for the load you intend to carry.
Choose a construction approach
Decide what you will carry and how you will carry it before choosing a design. A compact pouch, a multi-compartment shoulder bag, and a modified hold-all have different space and access needs.

| Use a camera-specific pattern | You want supplied dimensions and a guided construction sequence. | Sailrite’s leather pattern describes a modular, foam-padded interior and comes in two finished sizes: 10½ × 7½ × 7 inches for the full-size bag and 8½ × 6½ × 4½ inches for the mini. The pattern page says the finished bag and materials are not included. Treat those measurements as examples, not as a fit guarantee for your kit. Sailrite pattern |
| Draft a case for your camera | You want to tailor the shape and capacity to your equipment. | Brother’s fabric-case project instructs makers to adjust the pattern so the camera and attached lens fit. Its design uses exterior and lining fabric, padding, hook-and-loop closure, rings, straps, and swivel hooks. Brother camera-case project |
| Adapt an existing bag | You want to avoid constructing the whole exterior. | Envato Tuts+ shows adding foam and hook-and-loop to a sports or hold-all bag. This approach reduces bag-making work, but the tutorial does not provide a comparative protection rating. Envato Tuts+ tutorial |
Measure your kit and plan the compartments
- List the gear. Include the camera with its largest intended attached lens, the other lenses you will carry, and accessories such as batteries or a charger. Decide whether those items need separate spaces.
- Measure the equipment. Record the width, height, and depth of the camera-and-lens combination and of each item that needs its own compartment. Measure your own equipment rather than relying on a pattern’s example dimensions.
- Sketch the interior. Draw a single padded cavity or a layout with separate lens and accessory compartments. Removable, rearrangeable foam dividers, as described by Melly Sews, can make a layout easier to reconfigure. Sailrite’s pattern also describes a modular interior.
- Add construction allowance. Account for the thickness of padding and lining, seam allowances, closures, and divider walls when working out the cut dimensions. The finished inside space—not just the outside measurements—must fit the gear.
- Check a test fit. Before closing the lining, place the actual equipment in the assembled compartments and confirm that it fits without forcing the bag or pressing items against one another.
Choose materials and hardware for the design
Fabric construction
Brother’s project calls for medium-to-heavy exterior and lining fabrics, 1/2-inch padding, hook-and-loop fastener, rectangle rings, straps, and swivel hooks. Those are specifications for that project, not universal requirements. The tutorial recommends a sewing machine rather than a serger for sewing the padding, and gives seam allowances that vary with the machine used; follow its instructions or those of your chosen pattern rather than assuming one allowance applies to every build. Brother camera-case project
Leather construction
Sailrite’s leather pattern recommends 4–5 oz leather, a lining compatible with hook-and-loop, and brass or stainless-steel buckles and D-rings. Its listed skills include sewing dividers, combining fabric and leather, adding structure and padding, skiving leather, installing fasteners, and setting rivets. Plan for leatherworking tools and techniques as well as the bag materials. Sailrite pattern

Padding and protection
Padding and dividers are intended to cushion and separate gear, but the cited projects report no standardized impact-protection tests. No particular foam thickness establishes that a homemade bag is drop-proof or weatherproof. Choose padding to suit the construction and intended carry, and do not treat it as a substitute for careful handling.
Build and fit the bag
The order of assembly depends on the pattern or design. Use its cutting dimensions, seam allowances, and sequence where provided; the outline below describes the decisions common to a self-drafted fabric case, not a replacement for a specific pattern’s instructions.

- Cut the outer fabric, lining, and padding. Transfer the planned panel and divider dimensions, including the appropriate seam allowances. Brother’s project specifies padding cut slightly smaller than the fabric pieces; apply that detail when following that project, rather than assuming it is required for every pattern.
- Sew the padded panels and dividers. Assemble the padded sections and leave any openings needed to insert padding. Keep the divider positions aligned with the interior sketch so the intended compartments remain usable.
- Assemble the lining and exterior. Follow the chosen pattern’s order for joining the interior and outer shell; this varies by design.
- Add closures and strap attachments. Install the planned hook-and-loop or other closure, and attach rings, D-rings, webbing, or strap hardware as specified by the design. Check that attachment points are secured to the bag structure, not merely to a weak layer of lining.
- Finish and test the fit. Turn and finish the bag as directed, then load the camera and accessories and check access, compartment fit, closure operation, and strap attachments before carrying it.
Match the layout to how you shoot
Capacity, adjustability, access, material difficulty, and carry style are the main trade-offs. The cited examples range from compact cases to larger bags with laptop and accessory pockets, and include shoulder or cross-body features; they are design examples rather than performance rankings. Make the layout serve the kit you measured and the way you need to reach it.
