You can grow crystals on a shaped pipe-cleaner form by dissolving borax in hot water and letting the solution cool and evaporate. The result combines a handmade shape with visible crystal growth—but the exact Make: feature introduces the project and links to a video tutorial; it does not provide a complete written recipe or verified materials list.
How the crystal-growing project works
Borax forms a solution in water, and it dissolves more readily in hot water than in cold water. The International Union of Crystallography’s Crystals: A Handbook for School Teachers puts it plainly: “Borax is much more soluble in hot water than in cold water.” As the solution cools and water evaporates, dissolved borax can return to solid form as crystals.
In educational demonstrations, crystals grow on shaped pipe cleaners suspended in a borax solution. The pipe cleaner supplies a surface for crystals to form on; shaping it gives the growing crystals an outline. The visible change is the science at the heart of the jewelry idea.

What the sources establish about this jewelry design
Haley Pierson-Cox’s Make: article, published May 2, 2015, presents “grow-your-own-crystals” jewelry and points readers to Mark Montano’s video tutorial: Make: Crafty Science: Crystal Ball Jewelry with DIY Borax Crystals. It does not reproduce complete step-by-step directions, exact dimensions, or a bill of materials for Montano’s particular construction. Treat classroom crystal-growing activities as chemistry guidance, not as a verified set of instructions for that jewelry build.
Materials used in basic borax crystal demonstrations
Educational activities use borax powder, water, shaped pipe cleaners, and a container; shaping and suspending the form may require simple tools. The American Chemical Society activity also lists food coloring. These lists describe educational demonstrations, not a confirmed materials list for the Make: jewelry project. Add jewelry findings or cord only if the tutorial you follow calls for them.

Safety before you begin
- Have an adult assist, and have the adult handle borax powder as directed by the American Chemical Society activity.
- Wear safety goggles and handle hot liquids carefully. Science Buddies advises against dissolving borax in boiling water; follow the temperature and preparation directions in your selected activity.
- Avoid breathing borax powder and keep it away from eyes. Science Buddies warns that borax can be harmful if inhaled or if it contacts the eyes.
- Do not eat or drink any project materials. Keep the solution and finished pieces away from ingestion, and wash hands thoroughly after handling them.
Follow the explicit safety directions from the activity you are using. The American Chemical Society’s classroom activity and the American Association of Chemistry Teachers’ pipe-cleaner activity provide additional instructions: American Chemical Society: Crystal Growing and American Association of Chemistry Teachers: Growing Crystals. Science Buddies’ borax safety guidance is at Science Buddies: Borax Crystal Ornaments.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What changes crystal growth
Crystal growth depends on conditions, so a classroom demonstration does not guarantee a particular size or shape for a jewelry piece. The American Chemical Society activity compares growth under different cooling conditions. In a shaped project, the form’s shape and material also affect where crystals can attach and how the finished surface looks. Consider the outcome an experiment rather than a precise, repeatable jewelry finish.
