You can turn a photo of a tool into a custom Gridfinity bin by placing it on a known-size sheet, photographing the sheet from directly overhead, and using a photo-to-silhouette generator to create a cavity. The photo provides a silhouette cavity with constant depth, not a complete 3D model, so inspect the preview, check dimensions, and print a small sample before making a larger layout.
The paper is the scale reference: select the exact sheet size used, keep all four corners and the whole tool in frame, and use a darker surface beneath the paper. A compatible baseplate is useful for modular storage, but a bin can also be used without one.

Key takeaways
- The sheet’s known dimensions set the image scale; selecting the wrong paper size can silently resize the bin.
- A single photo creates a silhouette cavity with constant depth. It does not capture changes in the tool’s thickness along its length.
- Photograph from directly overhead with the full sheet, all four corners, and the entire tool visible.
- Inspect the preview and check the cavity dimensions against the real tool before printing.
- The described generator uses 42 mm per grid unit and 7 mm per height unit. A baseplate is useful but not required to use a bin.
- An FDM 3D printer and filament are needed to make the physical bin; a small sample print can help check fit and tolerances.
How do you create a custom Gridfinity bin from a photo?
Place the tool on a known-size sheet, photograph the whole scene from directly above, select the correct sheet size in a photo-to-silhouette generator, and tune the resulting cavity. Inspect and measure the preview, export the STL, and print a small sample to check the fit before committing to a larger layout.
The photo workflow rectifies the paper, extracts the tool silhouette, rotates it to a compact bounding box, and cuts a cavity into a Gridfinity bin. The photo supplies the outline; it does not determine the tool’s full 3D shape or thickness at every point.
What should you photograph before generating a Gridfinity tool holder?
Place the entire tool within the edges of a sheet whose exact size you can select in the generator, such as A4, US Letter, Legal, or A3. Put the sheet on a darker surface so its edges are easier to detect, and keep all four paper corners visible. The generator’s guide warns that treating A4 as US Letter changes the width by 2.8% and the height by 5.9%; those figures are the guide’s calculation, not an independent measurement study.
- Keep the complete tool outline and all four paper corners in frame.
- Photograph from directly overhead and avoid strong shadows across the tool.
- Use a darker surface under the paper and avoid glare that obscures its edges.
- Select the exact paper dimensions in the generator rather than relying on an assumed format.
If the tool is raised above the paper, a low camera angle can make its traced shape appear too large because the tool and scale reference are at different heights. The generator guide describes an object-height correction as a safety net; it still recommends an overhead photo.

Can a single photo create a complete 3D tool model?
No. A single photo mainly provides a 2D silhouette, which the generator uses to make a cavity of constant depth. It does not capture changes in the object’s thickness along its length, hidden surfaces, or a complete 3D model.

This distinction matters for tools with handles, jaws, hinges, or other sections of different thicknesses. A constant-depth silhouette cavity may not closely follow those changes. The generator guide describes a two-view method for varying profiles, but says that mode is command-line only—not a feature of the web generator.
Shadows, glare, clipped outlines, incorrect paper-size selection, and perspective can also produce a poor fit. Inspect the generated outline and preview rather than assuming the automatic result is correct.
Which tools can turn a tool image into an STL?
Choose a workflow based on whether you have a physical tool to photograph or an existing 3D model. A photo-to-silhouette generator is the direct match when you have the tool but no CAD model. A parametric generator is better suited to configuring grid-based bins or working from an existing STL.
| Route | Input and cavity approach | Control and output |
|---|---|---|
| Photo-to-silhouette generator | Uses a photo of a physical tool with a known-size sheet as its scale reference; one view produces a constant-depth silhouette cavity. | Inspect and tune the cavity, then export an STL. Check the generator’s current interface for available adjustments. |
| Parametric Gridfinity generator | Configure box dimensions, walls, compartments, baseplates, or other grid-based features directly; one documented tool also offers imported-STL cutouts. | Useful when you want to design the bin parametrically or already have a model for a cutout. Check the specific tool’s export options. |
| Client-side photo generator | A separate open-source project describes extracting a tool contour from a top-down photo and using a physical 42 × 42 mm square for calibration. | The project describes client-side processing and STL/DXF export. It is a separate implementation, not the primary photo-to-bin generator. |
Compare tools by their required input, whether the cavity follows a silhouette or a full 3D model, the amount of contour editing available, their export formats, and whether photo processing happens locally. Generator features and availability can change, so verify the current documentation before choosing a workflow.
How do you calibrate a tool image for accurate Gridfinity dimensions?
Calibrate by selecting the exact dimensions of the sheet shown in the image. The paper is the scale reference: if its size is entered incorrectly, the generated bin and cavity may be resized even if the outline looks plausible.

- Place the whole tool on a known-size sheet and keep the sheet’s four corners visible.
- Set the sheet on a darker surface to help distinguish its edges.
- Photograph from directly overhead to reduce perspective and height-related distortion.
- Select the exact sheet format or dimensions in the generator.
- Inspect the detected outline and preview, then compare a cavity dimension with the real tool.
- Use calipers to check critical dimensions when a close fit matters.
Keep the tool and paper visible in full; a clipped object or missing paper corner can interfere with the result. A digital caliper is optional, but can help check cavity dimensions against the real object.
What Gridfinity dimensions must the custom box preserve?
The described generator uses 42 mm per grid unit and 7 mm per height unit. Keep those units in mind when configuring the bin, but distinguish the standard grid dimensions from the custom tool cavity. A compatible baseplate is useful for modular storage; the bin can also be used without one.
| Part of the design | What to check | What you can customize |
|---|---|---|
| Grid layout | The described generator uses 42 mm per grid unit and 7 mm per height unit. | Choose the bin’s grid dimensions and its place in a larger layout. |
| Tool cavity | Check that the cavity fits inside the chosen bin and suits the tool’s silhouette. | Adjust cavity depth, clearance, and orientation. |
| Baseplate use | A compatible baseplate supports modular placement. | Use a baseplate or use the bin without one. |
The grid units define the bin’s layout. The photographed silhouette defines the cavity outline; it does not reveal the tool’s changing thickness or make a complete 3D model.
How should you correct the traced outline and add custom cutouts?
Inspect the outline and preview before printing. Look for missing sections, bulges caused by shadows, and an unexpectedly oversized shape. If the outline is incomplete, make sure the whole tool is inside the sheet boundary or use a larger sheet.
Then tune the cavity for the tool and printer:
- Clearance: Increase it for a looser fit and decrease it for a snugger fit, while accounting for printer tolerances.
- Cavity depth: Set it according to how much of the tool should sit below the rim. A pocket retains a floor; a through cut opens to the surface below.
- Perspective and height: If the cutout seems too large, check that the photo was taken overhead, the paper size is correct, and any object-height correction is appropriate.
- Varying profile: A single silhouette makes a constant-depth cavity and will not closely follow changing thickness. The guide describes a two-view method as command-line only.
Printer tolerances vary. Inspect the preview, check cavity dimensions against the tool, and use a small sample print when trying a new size or material.

Should Gridfinity boxes use magnets?
Magnets are not a requirement of the photo-to-silhouette workflow. The research reviewed for this article does not establish one universal magnet size for every bin. Check the design and current generator documentation if you want magnetic features; do not assume a generated bin has magnet holes.

How do you export and print the custom Gridfinity box?
Export the bin as an STL, then slice it in the software you normally use with your FDM 3D printer. A printer and filament are required to turn the generated geometry into a physical bin. Check that the chosen bin fits the printer’s build area and inspect the sliced result before printing.
A compatible Gridfinity baseplate is a useful accessory for modular storage, but it can itself be printed and is not required to use a bin. Digital calipers are optional for checking cavity dimensions. Keep any product choices tied to your actual printer, material, and workflow; the cited research does not establish a tested brand recommendation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you validate the first print?
Print a small sample before committing to a larger layout, especially when using a new size or material. Check the real tool against the printed cavity; a preview alone cannot confirm the physical fit.
- Inspect the preview for missing contours, shadow bulges, or an unexpectedly oversized outline.
- Use the generator’s measure tool to check a cavity dimension against the real tool, using calipers if needed.
- Slice and print a small sample of the bin or cavity.
- Check how the tool sits and whether the clearance and depth suit the intended use.
- Adjust the image setup, outline, clearance, or depth if the fit is wrong, then test again.
- Only after the sample fits should you proceed with a larger layout.
A sample print can expose scale selection errors, perspective, contour problems, and printer tolerances before you make a larger set of bins.

What is the most reliable workflow for a custom tool bin?
The reliable approach is to use the paper as a scale reference, take a careful overhead photo, inspect the silhouette and preview, and test the fit with a small print.
- Prepare the image: Put the whole tool on a known-size sheet over a darker surface.
- Capture overhead: Keep all four paper corners and the complete tool in frame; avoid strong shadows and glare.
- Set the scale: Select the exact sheet dimensions in the generator.
- Generate the cavity: Use the silhouette as a constant-depth cavity and set its depth for the tool.
- Inspect and measure: Look for outline problems and compare cavity dimensions with the real object.
- Export and test: Export the STL, slice it, and print a small sample.
- Iterate: Adjust the setup or cavity and test again before making a larger layout.
This workflow makes the photo useful without mistaking a silhouette for a complete 3D model. The paper establishes scale, and the sample print checks whether the cavity works in practice.
FAQ
Can I create a complete 3D Gridfinity tool holder from one photo?
No. One photo provides a silhouette cavity with constant depth; it does not capture changes in thickness along the tool’s length or a complete 3D model.
What paper should I use to make a custom Gridfinity bin from a photo?
Use a known-size sheet supported by the generator, such as A4, US Letter, Legal, or A3, and select the exact dimensions used. Keep all four corners visible and place the sheet on a darker surface.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy is my photo-generated tool cutout too large?
Check that you selected the correct paper size and took the photo directly overhead. A low camera angle can cause height-related distortion because the tool sits above the paper plane; the generator guide describes object-height correction as a safety net, not a substitute for an overhead photo.
Do I need calipers to make a custom tool bin?
No. Calipers are optional, but they can help compare a cavity dimension with the real tool when a close fit matters. Inspecting the preview and printing a small sample are also useful checks.
Can I use a custom Gridfinity bin without a baseplate?
Yes. A compatible baseplate is useful for modular storage, but the bin can also be used without one.
The Bottom Line
To turn a photo of a tool into a custom Gridfinity bin, use a known-size sheet as the scale reference, photograph from directly overhead with the whole sheet and tool visible, and select the exact sheet dimensions. Treat the result as a constant-depth silhouette cavity, inspect and measure it, and print a small sample before making a larger layout.
