Creating a Private Balinese-Inspired Garden: A Practical Australian Backyard Plan

A private Balinese-inspired garden starts with sightlines and climate, then layers screens, trellises, planting, shade and carefully chosen water features into usable outdoor rooms.

A private Balinese-inspired backyard is built by controlling views, layering planting and structures, creating shaded outdoor rooms, and choosing water and materials that suit your actual Australian site. Start with a view-and-climate survey rather than copying a photograph: identify where privacy is needed, how the sun and wind move, and how much irrigation and maintenance you can sustain. Then combine screens, trellises, planter boxes, foliage, paving and—only where appropriate—a pond or waterfall.

“Balinese-inspired” is best treated as an aesthetic brief rather than a fixed plant list or culturally authoritative design definition. The available Australian project examples show different responses to Brisbane, Sydney and coastal conditions, not a universal recipe. Your soil, exposure, bushfire or cyclone risk, water supply, household needs and local rules should determine the final details.

Begin with the privacy problem, not the plant palette

Walk the boundary and note every unwanted sightline. Mark windows in neighbouring homes, elevated decks, footpaths, driveways and any angle from which your own seating area is visible. Also record where you want to preserve a view, daylight or breezes. The WoodSolutions/Architecture & Design landscaping guide describes landscaping as a way to balance visual amenity with privacy, rather than assuming that every boundary needs one opaque wall.

Make a simple site plan showing north, the house, existing trees, doors, windows and the proposed private destination. Photograph the garden from standing and seated eye levels. A screen that works while standing may leave a seated dining table exposed, while a high barrier can block a useful breeze or make a small yard feel enclosed.

Separate the views you must block from those you only need to soften

  • Direct overlooking: a neighbouring window or deck aimed at the seating area may need a denser, taller intervention.
  • Peripheral exposure: a path or driveway can often be softened with layered foliage, a trellis or a breeze-block element.
  • Internal privacy: screen the outdoor shower, dining table or pool edge independently instead of enclosing the entire backyard.
  • Views worth keeping: frame a tree canopy, sky or distant landscape with openings so privacy does not become visual isolation.

Layer screens so one element does not carry every job

Use at least two or three layers at different distances from the boundary: a structural screen or wall, intermediate planting, and lower foliage or pots near the sitting area. This creates depth and lets you adjust planting as it grows. The guide identifies trees, shrubs, contained landscape screens and climbing plants on trellises as complementary options. On compact sites, the Green House project by Zen Architects uses perimeter planter boxes as privacy screens around courtyards, demonstrating how a boundary device can also hold plants and define a room.

Compare the main screening approaches

Approach What it can do Questions to resolve on site
Planted trellis Targets a specific sightline, supports climbers and can provide shade, particularly against western sun. Will the structure carry mature plant weight? How much pruning, irrigation and seasonal leaf change can you manage?
Planter-box screen Combines a raised planting bed with a boundary or courtyard screen; useful where ground space is limited. Can the slab or paving carry the soil and saturated planter? How will excess water drain?
Breeze blocks or perforated masonry Blocks direct views while retaining some daylight and airflow. The 5 October 2026 Brickworks editorial presents this as a privacy use for masonry. What proportion of the view must be blocked, and will the pattern create unwanted glare or wind turbulence?
More enclosed solid barrier Provides the most immediate visual separation and can anchor a room or support a roof. Will it shade the house, trap heat, resist local wind loads and comply with boundary or planning rules?
Layered planting without a wall Softens views, contributes foliage and can moderate shade and wind over time. How long will coverage take to establish, and can the plants survive the site’s exposure and water limits?

No universal performance ranking or cost comparison is established for these choices. Judge each one by the sightline it blocks, retained light and airflow, seasonal shade, compatibility with climbers, exposure to wind or fire, water demand and maintenance access.

Use trellises for targeted shade as well as privacy

Place a trellis where it intercepts the actual view or low western sun, rather than installing a continuous screen by habit. A deciduous climber can admit winter sun and provide summer cover, while an evergreen arrangement gives more consistent screening. The landscaping guide supports planning deciduous and non-deciduous planting for seasonal shade and wind moderation, but it does not provide a universal species or spacing schedule. Leave access behind the trellis for inspection, pruning and repainting or repair.

Create a sequence of private outdoor rooms

A tropical-feeling garden is more convincing when the backyard unfolds in small destinations instead of appearing as one undifferentiated rectangle. The Brickworks editorial recommends making distinct places for sitting, eating, reading or gathering. Choose one primary destination first—such as a shaded lounge or dining platform—then use planting, paving level changes or partial screens to give it enclosure.

A practical room sequence

  1. Arrival or threshold: use a gate, planting or a change in paving to mark the transition from the house.
  2. Circulation: curve or offset the path so the whole garden is not revealed in one sightline. Keep the walking route clear of mature plant spread.
  3. Private destination: position the main seat where the strongest overlooking is easiest to screen, while retaining a useful breeze.
  4. Secondary nook: add a smaller place for reading or morning coffee rather than making every area serve the same purpose.
  5. Service zone: keep bins, pumps, irrigation controls and maintenance access reachable without crossing the main seating area.

Think in layers of arrival, reveal and enclosure. A low planting edge can separate a path from a lounge; a taller screen behind the lounge can block the neighbour; a canopy above can provide shade without closing every side.

Design shade and airflow for a usable microclimate

Privacy is not successful if the screened area becomes dark, windless or overheated. Plant foliage can cool a microclimate through evapotranspiration, while carefully located trees, shrubs and structures can moderate wind. Observe the yard at morning, midday and late afternoon in both summer and winter. Western exposure deserves particular attention because low afternoon sun is difficult to manage with a shallow screen.

Check these conditions before fixing heights

  • Summer sun: locate shade where people sit during the hottest part of the day.
  • Winter sun: avoid placing an evergreen canopy where it will remove useful warmth from the house or seating.
  • Cross-breezes: retain openings or use permeable screens where airflow is valuable.
  • Wind acceleration: corners, roof edges and narrow gaps can increase gusts; a solid barrier may need professional structural advice.
  • Rain exposure: note where a roof, canopy or dense foliage keeps paving damp and increases maintenance.

Choose plants for the climate you actually have

Do not treat a photograph of a lush resort garden as a transferable planting plan. The Upper House project in Brisbane reports 3,544 native and tropical plantings selected for their ability to thrive in that local climate. It also uses a 40 kL rainwater tank for irrigation. Those figures describe one 2023 project, not a recommended number of plants or tank capacity for a backyard.

At the other end of the spectrum, Bismarck House in Bondi (2020) describes a hardy, extremely low-water garden using native and/or succulent species with no lawn. Together, these examples show that a tropical atmosphere can be interpreted through foliage, texture, shade and spatial planning while still respecting local rainfall and water limits. They do not establish that the same species will suit another suburb.

Build a site-specific plant brief

  1. Record your climate zone, frost or heat exposure, prevailing winds and approximate annual rainfall.
  2. Test or obtain advice about soil drainage, pH and compaction before filling large planters.
  3. Divide the site into sun, filtered shade and deep shade; note areas affected by reflected heat from paving or walls.
  4. Set a water and maintenance ceiling: frequent irrigation and pruning may be acceptable for a small courtyard but not for a large boundary.
  5. Ask a local nursery, horticulturist or landscape designer to verify mature size, root behaviour, toxicity concerns and weed potential for your council area.

Use layers rather than a single species wall: taller canopy or screening plants, mid-height foliage, groundcover and containers. Keep enough clearance to inspect fences, gutters, drains and external walls. If you are in a bushfire-prone area, obtain site-specific advice before placing dense vegetation or combustible structures near the house.

Decide whether water belongs in the design

A pond or waterfall can supply movement, sound and a focal point, but it is not automatically low-maintenance or water-efficient. Architecture & Design’s Waterfall project combines rainforest planting, green walls and four independently controlled waterfalls; the controls were adjusted for differing wind conditions. Zen Architects’ Green House includes a courtyard pond, with windows oriented to catch breezes over the water. These are architectural precedents, not evidence of backyard operating costs, water use or maintenance intervals.

Use a water-feature decision check

  • Purpose: do you want sound to mask traffic, a visual focus from inside, habitat, or simply a reflective surface?
  • Location: can the feature be seen from the main room or seat without occupying the only circulation route?
  • Supply and losses: how will you top it up during dry weather, and how will evaporation, splash and overflow be managed?
  • Maintenance: where will pumps, filters and electrical controls be accessed and serviced?
  • Safety: check applicable barriers, electrical, child-safety and wildlife requirements with your local authority and qualified trades.
  • Wind: exposed jets and falls may spray nearby walls or seating; wind-sensitive controls may be necessary.

If those answers are uncertain, create a dry focal point with textured masonry, a sculptural stone, planting and concealed lighting infrastructure instead of committing to permanent water.

Use materials that support the garden’s atmosphere and risks

Paving, masonry, timber, metal and stone should reinforce the room layout and survive the site’s conditions. Breeze blocks can provide patterned privacy while allowing light and air; solid masonry gives stronger enclosure but may increase heat and wind loads. Brett Ward, Brickworks’ general manager of marketing, described brick and masonry as combining durability with warmth, texture and character in Australian outdoor living. That is an industry perspective, not independent comparative testing.

Plan the work in an order that prevents expensive rework

  1. Survey: map sightlines, sun, wind, drainage, services, existing roots and access for construction.
  2. Set priorities: choose the one or two views and the one primary outdoor room that matter most.
  3. Resolve approvals and hazards: check boundary, retaining-wall, plumbing, electrical, pool or water-feature rules, plus bushfire and cyclone requirements where relevant.
  4. Install structural elements: build retaining edges, screens, trellises, paving, drainage and service conduits before planting.
  5. Plant in layers: place the largest climate-suitable plants first, then mid-storey and low planting, keeping maintenance access.
  6. Commission irrigation and water features: test coverage, overflow, pumps, controls and shut-offs before final mulching.
  7. Observe a full season: note glare, wind, water use, privacy gaps and plant stress; adjust pruning, screens or supplementary plants rather than replacing everything at once.

Maintain privacy without losing the garden’s character

Set a seasonal inspection routine. Check trellis fixings, planter drainage, irrigation emitters, pump access, screen stability and branches near roofs or power lines. Prune for clear paths and sightline control, not just maximum density. Replace failed plants with another option suited to the same exposure instead of forcing a species that repeatedly struggles.

Reassess after major weather: high winds, cyclones, heatwaves and intense rain can expose weak fixings or drainage problems. In fire-prone areas, follow the advice of the relevant fire authority and qualified landscape or building professionals; the landscaping guide specifically flags the need to balance elements close to a home against bushfire, high-wind and cyclonic conditions as applicable.

A decision framework for the finished backyard

Question If the answer is “yes” If the answer is “no”
Does the intervention block the intended sightline from seated and standing positions? Keep the layer and refine planting density. Raise, reposition or add a second layer rather than automatically making one barrier solid.
Does it preserve the light and airflow the room needs? Retain the permeability or seasonal opening. Use gaps, breeze blocks, pruning or a lower profile.
Can the plants thrive with your available water and maintenance time? Confirm mature size and install irrigation access. Choose a locally verified alternative or reduce the planted area.
Can every structural, electrical and water component be inspected? Document shut-offs and maintenance access. Redesign before covering it with soil, paving or dense foliage.
Does the design remain appropriate for fire, wind and cyclone exposure? Proceed with qualified checks. Seek site-specific advice and change materials, spacing or location.
