Pine cones can become simple ornaments, garlands, wreath accents, basket displays, or painted decorations. For a natural look, gather cones and pair them with greenery; for a more colorful finish, use paint to add snowy tips, metallic shine, or miniature-tree details. Clean and dry foraged cones before bringing them indoors, and keep all cone decorations away from flames and heat sources.
Start by cleaning and drying gathered cones
Before using foraged cones indoors, University of Vermont Extension recommends soaking them in a solution of two parts warm water to one part white vinegar for 30 minutes. Weigh them down if they float, and stir the water every 10 minutes to loosen debris and bugs. Shake off excess water, then dry the cones completely on a towel or cooling rack. This is UVM Extension’s recommended preparation method; it should not be treated as a universal sterilization standard or as fire protection.
Check cones for small bugs before dipping them in paint or glue, as the National Trust advises. Use only fully dry cones for decorating.

Make simple ornaments and garlands
Hang a single cone with a bow
Tie a bow to a suitable cone and hang it from a tree branch, as suggested by University of Illinois Extension. Choose ribbon that suits the rest of your decorations, or leave the cone unpainted for a more natural finish.
String cones on twine
For a natural garland, tie cleaned cones along natural-fiber twine. University of Vermont Extension recommends this approach. Keep the spacing even for a tidy line, or group cones in small clusters for a looser, more organic look.

Add cones to greenery
Use cones as accents among greenery in a wreath or centerpiece. The University of Vermont and University of Illinois Extensions describe cone arrangements with greenery and other natural finds, including handmade wreaths and holiday pots. To shift the display from fall into winter, change the accompanying colors and greenery rather than replacing the cones.
Arrange a basket for winter
West Virginia University Extension suggests combining pine cones, greenery, ribbon, and battery-operated fairy lights in a basket. The lights are optional; follow their manufacturer’s placement and use instructions, and keep the arrangement away from heat.

Paint cones for a different seasonal finish
Brush on snowy edges
For a snow-tipped look, brush white paint onto the edges of an open cone. The National Trust also suggests adding glitter if you want extra sparkle.
Add metallic color
Dip or paint cones gold or silver for a brighter accent. Glitter is optional. The National Trust describes metallic cones, and Illinois Extension notes that spray paint and glitter paint can also be used on pine cones.

Make a miniature cone tree
Paint a large open cone green, then attach small pom-poms or beads to the scale tips. This National Trust project turns the cone’s natural shape into a tiny tree decoration.
Try a small animal ornament
The National Trust’s mouse project uses a small cone, cone scales, an acorn cup, twine or a flexible twig, paint, and glue. The idea uses the cone’s shape as the animal’s body; follow the project’s material guidance if you want to recreate its specific design.

Keep natural decorations away from heat and flames
Dried natural materials can catch fire. Oklahoma State University Extension advises keeping seasonal decorations away from open flames, fireplaces, vents, radiators, and other heat sources. Gina Peek of Oklahoma State University Extension puts it plainly: “While decorations such as dried flowers, cornstalks or crepe paper can easily catch fire, all decorations should be located away from open flames, fireplaces, vents, radiators and other heat sources to reduce the fire risk.”
- Keep cone displays away from candles, fireplaces, vents, radiators, and other heat sources.
- Place decorations where they will not obstruct doorways or foot traffic.
- Watch for sharp or small parts around young children.
- Consider flameless candles instead of open flames.
Washing, vinegar treatment, or painting does not make pine cones fire-resistant. University of California San Diego’s separate guidance on flame-retardant materials, exits, and listed lights applies to workplaces; it is not a household rule.

Keep the project simple or add optional supplies
For a no-cost approach, use gathered cones and twigs, then add greenery you already have. Depending on the project, optional materials include water-based craft paint and a paintbrush, craft glue, natural-fiber twine, small pom-poms or beads, and battery-operated fairy lights. A wreath base may be useful for a wreath, but these supplies are not necessary for every idea.
