Choose the original Cricut Maker if you need Rotary Blade fabric cutting, Knife Blade work, or other Maker-only tools. Choose the Cricut Explore Air 2 if you mainly cut vinyl, iron-on and cardstock and prefer its physical Smart Set dial. Both are older, mat-required machines; neither feeds Smart Materials without a mat. The better choice is determined by your materials and tools, not by the headline material count alone.

Choose by the materials you actually plan to cut
Pick the Maker for fabric and dense-material projects
The Maker is the only one of these two models designed around Cricut’s Adaptive Tool System. Its separately sold Rotary Blade is intended for fabric and other soft materials, while its separately sold Knife Blade is intended for some denser craft materials. Those tools are not merely optional accessories for the Explore Air 2: the Explore lacks the drive mechanism required for Knife Blade use and cannot be upgraded to run either Maker-only workflow. Cricut’s blade compatibility information is summarized in All About Cricut Blades and Machine Tools.

That makes the Maker the practical choice when rotary fabric cutting, some unbacked fabrics, leather or suitable dense materials is central to your projects. You still need the appropriate blade, mat and material; the machine alone does not include every specialty tool.
Pick Explore Air 2 for common craft stocks
Explore Air 2 is aimed at the materials many everyday projects use. Cricut says, “Cricut Explore Air 2 works with 100+ materials, including popular materials like vinyl, iron-on, and cardstock.” If those categories cover your signs, decals, labels, paper crafts and basic apparel work, its tool limits may never affect you.
How the cutting workflow differs
Explore Air 2’s Smart Set dial
The Explore Air 2 has a physical Smart Set dial with predefined material settings. Turn it to a named material, load the mat and let Design Space proceed. Cricut still recommends a small test cut: actual results vary with the specific brand, coating, age and condition of the stock. The dial is convenient, but it is not a guarantee that every material will cut identically.

Maker settings in Design Space
Maker material selection is handled in Design Space rather than by a comparable physical dial. That gives you access to the Maker’s broader tool and material combinations, but it also means checking the on-screen setting and choosing the correct installed blade. For unfamiliar stock, use a sample before committing a full sheet.
Mats, cut length and Smart Materials
Both original machines use the same basic mat sizes: 12 × 12 inches and 12 × 24 inches. Cricut’s loading instructions for the Explore and Maker families are in How to load/unload mats and materials.
Neither the original Maker nor Explore Air 2 can feed Cricut Smart Materials matlessly. If long, continuous cuts without a mat are a deciding requirement, look at a newer compatible generation instead of treating either older model as a Smart Materials machine. Cricut’s comparison chart identifies the capabilities of current and newer models at Machine Comparison Chart.

Print Then Cut: an important color restriction
Explore Air 2’s Print Then Cut workflow supports non-reflective white materials only. This rules out many colored, reflective and glossy printable stocks even when the sheet otherwise feeds correctly.
Recommended Free Tools
Cricut’s later Maker-family guidance allows certain non-reflective white, lightly colored and simple-patterned materials, but reflective or glossy stock remains unsupported. The detailed compatibility rules are in Print Then Cut – Compatible Materials. Check the exact machine guidance before buying printable media; do not transfer newer Maker 3 or Maker 4 features to the original Maker.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Material thickness: why a millimeter figure is not a promise
Cricut’s guidance for unlisted Explore Air 2 materials suggests staying under 2.0 mm, while warning that successful cutting depends on rigidity and density. A thin, rigid sheet and a soft, dense sheet of the same thickness can behave very differently. Treat “less than 2.0 mm” as test guidance, not a universal guaranteed maximum. Budget for the complete setup, not only the machine
No current price, bundle contents or inventory is established here, so compare live listings for the exact model and seller rather than relying on an old “cheaper” verdict. Include the recurring supplies your projects require:
- Standard 12 × 12 or 12 × 24 inch mats, which both machines use.
- Replacement Fine-Point or Deep-Point blades as appropriate.
- For Maker specialty work, the separately sold Rotary Blade, Knife Blade or QuickSwap tools.
- Fabric-specific equipment, such as a suitable FabricGrip mat, when cutting fabric.
- The vinyl, iron-on, cardstock, fabric or dense stock your chosen projects consume.
Verify the listing’s model name, included tools, mat quantity, warranty terms and compatibility. “Maker” in a listing can refer to the original Maker or a newer Maker 3/Maker 4, whose capabilities are not identical.

Choose the original Maker when
- Rotary Blade fabric cutting is a core requirement.
- You expect to use Knife Blade workflows for suitable dense materials.
- You want access to Maker-only specialty tools and accept buying them separately.
- Your materials extend beyond the common vinyl, iron-on and cardstock range.
Choose Explore Air 2 when
- Your projects are mainly vinyl, iron-on, cardstock and other common supported materials.
- You prefer selecting a starting setting with a physical Smart Set dial.
- You do not need Rotary Blade or Knife Blade workflows.
- Mat-based cutting in 12 × 12 or 12 × 24 inch formats is acceptable.
Consider a newer generation when
- You require matless Smart Materials cuts.
- You need broader Print Then Cut color support than Explore Air 2 provides.
- You are comparing listings whose names include Maker 3, Maker 4, Explore 3 or Explore 4; those are different models and should be evaluated separately.
Bottom line
The original Cricut Maker is the stronger fit for fabric, dense-material and specialty-tool projects because Explore Air 2 cannot run its Rotary Blade or Knife Blade. Explore Air 2 is the simpler fit for mainstream vinyl, iron-on and cardstock work, particularly if its Smart Set dial appeals to you. Both require mats, and neither offers the matless Smart Materials workflow found on newer compatible machines.
