To put editable text on a curve, attach it to a vector path in Illustrator or Inkscape; for a simpler curved-text effect, Canva also offers a built-in option. In Illustrator, use the center bracket to position the string along the path, drag it across the path to flip it, and use Baseline Shift to move it across without changing its reading direction. These are separate controls, and Illustrator’s Center alignment refers to the letters’ position relative to the path—not necessarily centering the whole string.
This is different from warping an entire text box into an arc. Use type on a path for logos, badges, labels, invitations, posters, and scalable artwork where the lettering should follow a precise curve without being unnecessarily distorted.
Choose the right method first
“Curved text” can describe several different techniques. Choosing the wrong one is a common reason text looks distorted, becomes difficult to edit, or refuses to sit correctly on a logo.
| Method | What changes | Text remains live? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type on a path | Each character follows a baseline path. | Usually | Logos, circular labels, badges, and signage |
| Arc or warp | The text object is bent or reshaped. | Usually, until expanded | Quick headline effects |
| Envelope distortion | Text is reshaped inside an editable envelope. | Usually, with limitations | Custom poster lettering |
| Outlines | Letters become vector shapes. | No ordinary text editing | Final cutting or fixed production artwork |
| Raster transformation | Pixels are bent, rotated, or distorted. | No | Effects-heavy bitmap graphics |
With true type on a path, the path is effectively an invisible baseline. It may be an open arc, wave, or hand-drawn line, or the edge of a closed circle, ellipse, rectangle, or custom shape. The path has a direction and a starting point, so reversing it can change the text’s reading direction and which side of the path the letters occupy.

For a web graphic, the equivalent SVG mechanism is textPath, which renders text along a referenced path. See the MDN textPath reference and the W3C SVG text specification.
How to create curved text in Illustrator
Illustrator is generally the strongest choice for editable vector lettering, logos, badges, packaging, signage, and print production. Its current documentation covers type on open and closed paths, alignment, spacing, movement, and flipping.
- Create a line or shape with the Pen, Pencil, Curvature, or shape tool.
- Choose the Type on a Path Tool.
- Click the path where the lettering should begin.
- Type or paste your wording.
- Set the font, size, weight, color, and paragraph alignment.
- Use the path’s brackets to position the text along the curve.
For the full control set, choose Type > Type on a Path > Type on a Path Options. Adobe’s Illustrator type-on-a-path guide documents the workflow, alignment choices, spacing controls, effects, and overflow behavior. Exact interface details can vary between desktop editions and older releases.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCenter text on a curve
To center the whole string along the path, set paragraph alignment to Center, then position the center bracket at the desired midpoint. Alignment alone may not produce optical centering, because the font’s letter shapes and tracking affect the result.
In Type on a Path Options, Illustrator’s Align To Path setting controls how the characters sit relative to the path. The choices are Ascender, Descender, Center, and Baseline. Adobe defines Center as aligning letters halfway between the font’s ascender and descender; it does not center the whole text string along the curve. Use Baseline Shift in the Character panel to move the letters across the path without changing their direction.

Move or flip the lettering
To move the string along the path without flipping it, select the type-on-path object and hold Ctrl on Windows or Command on macOS while dragging the center bracket. To put the text on the opposite side of the path, drag the bracket across the path. This flips the lettering across the path.
Adjust spacing and effects
Open Type on a Path Options and adjust Spacing for curved or angled paths. On a straight path, ordinary kerning and tracking are usually more appropriate. Illustrator also offers path-type effects including Rainbow, Skew, 3D Ribbon, Stair Step, and Gravity. These change how characters sit relative to the baseline; they are not the same as warping the whole text object.
Fix Illustrator overflow
If the phrase is longer than the usable path, Illustrator shows an overflow indicator. Adobe says you can resize the type area to reveal remaining text. You can also lengthen the path, reduce type size or spacing, shorten the wording, or use a circle with a larger radius. Do not outline the text merely to hide overflow: that removes normal editability without solving the layout problem.
How to create curved text in Photoshop
Photoshop is practical when curved lettering belongs in a photo composition, poster mockup, thumbnail, or other raster-heavy document. Adobe documents live text along open and closed paths, but Illustrator remains more specialized for detailed vector typography.
- Create a path or shape with the Pen tool, Curvature Pen tool, or a shape tool.
- Select the Horizontal Type Tool or Vertical Type Tool.
- Move the pointer directly over the path. The cursor should change to a type cursor with a wavy line.
- Click the path and type your text.
- Commit the text using the checkmark or Commit control in the Options bar.
The direction in which the path’s anchor points were created affects the text direction. If the cursor does not change, place the pointer more precisely over the path and confirm that you created a valid work path or shape path rather than merely painting a line.

Use Photoshop’s path-text workflow instead of Warp Text when you need letters to follow actual curve geometry. Warp Text bends the text object; it does not replace type on a path. See Adobe’s Photoshop guide to adding text along paths or inside shapes.
How to do it in Inkscape
Inkscape is a free, open-source option for vector and SVG work. Its path-text workflow keeps the text and path relationship editable while you refine the design.
- Draw a path with a shape tool, Bezier/Pen tool, or freehand tool.
- Create ordinary text separately on the canvas. Do not create flowed text for a single curved line.
- Set the text alignment to left, center, or right before attaching it to the path.
- Select both the text and the path.
- Choose Text > Put on Path.
Inkscape’s Beginners’ Guide distinguishes Put on Path from Flow into Frame. The former follows a baseline; the latter fills an area or shape. You can edit the text and path separately while retaining their relationship. Use vertical kerning to move text up or down relative to the path. Convert the lettering to paths only when a final cutting or delivery workflow requires it.
SVG: text along a path on the web
For developers, use an SVG path and a textPath that references the path’s unique ID:
<svg viewBox=”0 0 500 200″ xmlns=”http://www.w3.org/2000/svg”> <path id=”curve” d=”M 40 140 C 150 20, 350 20, 460 140″ fill=”none” stroke=”none” /> <text> <textPath href=”#curve” startOffset=”50%” text-anchor=”middle”> Curved text along a path </textPath> </text> </svg>
The important pieces are the path’s id, the matching href, startOffset for position, and text-anchor=”middle” for centering around that position. Set both fill and stroke to none when the guide path should not appear.

Give every path a unique ID; duplicate IDs can cause one text object to reference the wrong curve. The path’s direction controls reading direction and character orientation. To reverse the result, reverse the path data or define a second path with the opposite direction.
Keep an accessible text alternative or nearby semantic text where appropriate. Converting SVG text to outlines harms editability, searchability, and accessibility. Rendering can also differ when the intended font is unavailable, so fixed-output artwork may need a controlled font environment or a separate outlined export. Test the target browser or framework rather than assuming identical results.
Making circular badge and seal text
Top arc
Use the upper portion of a circle or ellipse as the baseline. Center the phrase along the arc, then adjust tracking and baseline position until the lettering has an even visual margin from the badge edge.
Bottom arc
Bottom lettering can appear upside down or mirrored if the path direction or side is wrong. Check which side of the baseline the lettering occupies and the path direction before changing it. In Illustrator, drag the center bracket across the path to flip the text; use Baseline Shift to move it across without changing its direction. In Inkscape, the path positions the baseline, and vertical kerning moves text relative to it. Simply rotating the whole phrase can produce sideways or inverted letters and does not preserve the intended baseline relationship.

A larger circle gives characters more room to rotate and reduces crowding. If the phrase is dense, shorten it, reduce the type size, choose a less decorative font, or split the wording into separate top and bottom text objects. A separate path for each arc is often easier to control than forcing one long phrase around a complete circle.

Troubleshooting curved text
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Text is upside down | The path direction or side is wrong. | Check the path direction and side. In Illustrator, drag the center bracket across the path to flip the text. |
| Text reads backward or mirrored | The path direction or the side of the baseline may be wrong. | Check the path direction and which side the lettering occupies; use the application-specific path controls rather than assuming one fix applies everywhere. |
| Text starts in the wrong place | The start point or offset is misplaced. | Move the start or center bracket; in SVG, change startOffset. |
| Text is off-center along the curve | The string position, alignment, tracking, or font shapes are affecting its placement. | Use paragraph center alignment and position the center bracket; make an optical adjustment if needed. |
| Letters sit too high or low relative to the path | The path alignment or baseline position is wrong. | In Illustrator, change Align To Path or Baseline Shift. In Inkscape, adjust vertical kerning. |
| Text is clipped | The phrase is longer than the available path. | Extend the path or resize the type area to reveal overflow; reduce type size or spacing, or shorten the wording. |
| Letters collide | The curve is too tight or the characters are too large. | Broaden the curve, reduce type size or tracking, or use a simpler font. |
| The path appears in the export | The guide path still has a stroke or fill. | Remove both, hide the guide layer, or use fill=”none” and stroke=”none” in SVG. |
| The text is no longer editable | It was outlined or rasterized. | Return to the live-text master file and keep an outlined copy only for final production. |
| The text looks distorted | Warp, envelope distortion, or bitmap transformation was used. | Rebuild it as live text attached to a vector path unless deliberate deformation is wanted. |
| The Photoshop type cursor does not appear | The pointer is not directly over a valid path. | Move over the path and verify that it is a work path or shape path, not a painted stroke. |
Design practices that improve the result
- Use smooth curves. Sharp corners make characters rotate abruptly and can cause collisions. Smooth Bézier curves are usually cleaner.
- Leave enough path length. A phrase needs room for its full width, including ascenders, descenders, tracking, and optical adjustments.
- Choose a readable font. Moderate stroke contrast, open counters, stable proportions, and clear uppercase forms tend to survive curves better than highly decorative swashes or extreme contrast.
- Adjust optically. Geometric centering is a starting point. Letter shapes and visual weight may require a small shift.
- Keep a nonprinting guide. A separate path makes it easier to change the curve, reuse it, and create alternate badge versions.
- Preserve a live master. Keep editable text in the source file. Export outlined artwork separately when a printer, cutting machine, or other fixed-output workflow requires it.
- Check the final size. Curved lettering that looks comfortable at a large working size may become crowded or illegible when reduced.
Which tool should you use?
| Need | Suitable option |
|---|---|
| Editable custom-path vector typography for logos, badges, packaging, signage, or print | Illustrator |
| Curved lettering within a photo or raster composition | Photoshop |
| Free vector editing or SVG work | Inkscape |
| A simple curved, bent, spiral, or circular text effect | Canva’s built-in curved-text feature |
| Responsive or data-driven web graphics with text in the document structure | Native SVG |
The sources reviewed document editable arbitrary-path workflows for Illustrator and Inkscape, while Canva advertises a built-in curved-text effect. Do not assume those approaches provide the same path controls. For one-off designs, choose based on whether you need a custom editable path or a simpler curve effect.
The essential workflow
Create a real vector path, attach live text to it, then correct its position along the path, its side and direction, alignment against the baseline, and spacing. These are separate adjustments. Only after the design is approved should you consider outlining or rasterizing. That order keeps the lettering editable and easier to repair when the wording or curve changes.
FAQ
How do I center text along a path in Illustrator?
Set paragraph alignment to Center and move the center bracket to the desired midpoint of the path. Then make any needed optical adjustment. The Center choice under Align To Path controls how the letters sit relative to the baseline; it does not center the whole string along the curve.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How do I move text without flipping it in Illustrator?
Hold Ctrl on Windows or Command on macOS while dragging the center bracket to move the text along the path without crossing to the other side.
How do I flip text to the other side of a path?
In Illustrator, drag the center bracket across the path. If you need to move letters across the path while keeping their reading direction, use Baseline Shift instead.
Why does my text on a path look backward or mirrored?
The path direction and the side of the baseline both affect the result. Check both, then use the controls for your application; a fix that works in one editor may not apply to another.
How do I put text on a path in Inkscape?
Create ordinary text and a path, set the text alignment before attaching it, select both objects, then choose Text > Put on Path. The text and path remain editable, and vertical kerning adjusts the text’s position relative to the path.
What is the difference between type on a path and Warp Text?
Type on a path places characters along an actual path baseline. Warp Text bends the text object into an effect, so it does not provide the same path-based placement.
