Curved windows can do more than soften a facade. They can steer a view, wrap a room around changing light, and make a house feel connected to its site. The Architecture & Design feature published on 19 March 2024 presents three residential examples—Black Rock House, Glazed Courtyard and Peninsula House—but its captions provide substantial project evidence for only one. SAAJ Design identifies Black Rock House as Bay View House in Melbourne and documents its boat-inspired geometry, multi-level outlook and award history. The other two names remain visual references rather than fully described case studies.
What this curved-window feature actually documents
The page behind this feature is an image-led selection of curved-window residences. Its captions name Black Rock House, Glazed Courtyard and Peninsula House, while the visible article text does not supply full descriptions of the latter two. That distinction matters: a caption can establish the name used by the publication, but it cannot establish an architect, location, window system, construction method or award unless those details are separately documented.

For Black Rock House, a substantive project account is available from SAAJ Design. The studio calls the home Bay View House and places it in Black Rock, Melbourne. SAAJ credits itself with architecture and interiors, Brynor Constructions as builder and Dave Kulesza as photographer. Its project narrative explains the design intention, the arrangement of the principal living spaces and the awards it lists. Those are the claims that can be examined in detail here.
The feature page also presents Creative Windows as a supplier. That establishes an association on the page, not a current product catalogue, performance specification or affiliate relationship. Anyone seeking custom glazing should confirm the supplier’s present services, lead times, engineering process and warranty terms directly before treating the listing as a recommendation.

This table is intentionally conservative. It prevents the phrase “award-winning designs” from being read as proof that every pictured house won a prize. The documented awards belong to Bay View House as listed by SAAJ Design; they should not be transferred to Glazed Courtyard or Peninsula House without project-specific evidence.

The client brief translated into geometry
SAAJ Design says the clients wanted the feeling of living on the water. Their interest in boats became a starting point for spherical forms rather than a decorative motif added after the plan was settled. This is a useful way to understand curved windows: the curve works best when it expresses a larger spatial idea. In Bay View House, the reported idea is a house that behaves like a vessel, with rooms and terraces oriented toward the bay.

Using a difficult site for a wider view
The studio describes a site surrounded by four neighbours. Despite that context, its digital studies enabled an upper first-floor arrangement containing the living, dining, kitchen and alfresco areas. SAAJ says this level was configured to frame a 270-degree view of the bay and city skyline. The figure is a project-specific description from the architect, not a general performance statistic, but it explains why the glazing and the plan must be read together. A curved opening is valuable here because it can gather several sightlines from one continuous living zone instead of forcing every room to face a single direction.
Vertical movement and protected outdoor space
SAAJ also describes a wind-sheltered roof deck and a lift serving the levels of the house. These details show that the project is not simply an exercise in making a rounded window. The view strategy extends vertically: the principal living level, roof deck and circulation system are coordinated so that moving through the house changes the relationship with the horizon. The source does not publish independent wind measurements or engineering data, so “wind-sheltered” should be understood as the studio’s description of the roof-deck design rather than a certified performance result.
Why the awards matter—and what they do not prove
SAAJ lists the Corian Awards Overall Winner – Residential Grand Prize and the Trends International Design Awards Winner – Australian Architect Suite of the Year for Bay View House. It also lists additional finalist, runner-up and high-commendation results. These distinctions indicate recognition received by the project in the categories named by the studio. They do not, by themselves, establish that a particular window product performed better than another, that the house is easier to build, or that the design will suit every site.

What a curved window changes in a home
View selection becomes a plan-making exercise
A flat window usually establishes a principal direction. A curve can broaden the field of view, but only if the surrounding plan, structure and furniture allow the eye to travel. When studying a curved-house image, look for the point the glazing is trying to capture: water, a garden, a courtyard, a skyline or a controlled slice of sky. Then ask whether the room is arranged to occupy that view or whether the curve is merely a facade gesture.

Light arrives from more than one angle
Curved glazing can receive daylight across a changing arc as the sun moves. That may produce a more gradual transition between bright and shaded areas, but it can also make glare, solar heat and privacy harder to resolve. The correct response depends on orientation, glass specification, shading and the room’s use. The available sources do not state those parameters for the three pictured projects, so photographs should be treated as evidence of visual effect, not proof of thermal or daylight performance.
Structure and detailing become less forgiving
A curve affects the geometry of frames, seals, flashings, internal linings and adjacent finishes. A successful design brief should settle the radius, sightlines, opening operation, drainage path and cleaning access before the facade is documented. Curved glass may be fixed, segmented or operable; the images in the feature do not identify which approach was used in Glazed Courtyard, Peninsula House or Bay View House. That is why a visual reference is a starting point for a technical conversation, not a specification to copy.
Furniture and artwork need a second look
Rooms with curved edges often work best when furniture is planned from the perimeter inward. Low pieces can preserve a horizon line, while tall storage or artwork may need a straighter wall elsewhere. For painters and decorators, the junction between a curved reveal and a ceiling is especially important: raking light can expose uneven preparation, and colour changes may read differently around the arc. These are practical design considerations rather than documented features of the three homes.
How to read Glazed Courtyard and Peninsula House without guessing
The two captions are still useful as prompts, but the evidence stops at their names. “Glazed Courtyard” suggests a relationship between enclosure and an interior or sheltered outdoor room; “Peninsula House” suggests a site condition associated with a projecting landform. Neither implication is enough to assign a location, architect, glazing type or award. Treat the photographs as visual references and record only what can be seen directly: the apparent curvature, the way frames divide the opening, the height of the sill, the connection to adjacent surfaces and the direction of the view.

If you need verified project information, request the original project sheets, architect credits, planning documents or manufacturer schedules. A credible source should identify the project and explain the claim it supports. Do not use the names alone to infer that either house is award-winning, coastal, structurally frameless or fitted with a particular supplier’s system.

1. Define the view before drawing the curve
Write down the exact visual objective: a wide water outlook, a framed tree, a courtyard connection or a corner that needs softening. Mark the important sightlines from seated and standing positions. A curve chosen without a view strategy can consume budget while adding little to the room.
2. Map orientation, privacy and weather
Record the direction of the opening, neighbouring windows, prevailing exposure and the times when direct sun reaches the room. Decide where privacy is required and whether shading, planting, screening or a change in sill height will solve it. Bay View House demonstrates that a strong outlook can coexist with close neighbours, but SAAJ’s account does not provide a transferable solution for another site.
3. Choose the geometry and opening method together
Confirm whether the design needs one continuous arc, a series of faceted panes, a curved fixed pane or a combination of fixed and operable sections. Ask the fabricator how the radius is measured, where joints occur and how replacement would be handled. Keep a full-size drawing of the frame, reveal and adjacent finishes so the curve is coordinated with structure and interior work.

4. Resolve performance requirements early
Have the project team specify glass make-up, safety requirements, solar control, acoustic targets, ventilation and drainage for the actual climate and exposure. Do not infer these values from a photograph or from an award citation. The sources for the featured projects do not publish product specifications or measured energy results.
5. Design the room around maintenance
Provide safe access for cleaning, inspection and seal replacement. Check how blinds, curtains or external screens follow the radius and where they can be repaired. Consider condensation management at the sill and head, and make sure interior paint and trim can be renewed without dismantling the glazing.
6. Coordinate the palette with moving light
Sample wall, ceiling and trim colours beside a temporary curved mock-up or a large-radius board. Light that grazes an arc can exaggerate changes in sheen and surface preparation. A restrained palette can keep attention on the view, while a contrasting reveal can make the geometry legible; the right choice depends on the room rather than on the award status of a precedent.

Ask for a quote that separates design, engineering, glass, frames, delivery, installation, access equipment, finishing and future servicing. Bespoke curved components can affect programme and replacement cost. The Architecture & Design page’s Creative Windows listing does not state current prices or capabilities, so obtain present, project-specific information before committing.
Dates, credits and the limits of the record
Architecture & Design displays 19 March 2024 as the article date and credits Architecture & Design Team as author. SAAJ Design’s awards and publications page categorizes the related article under 2023, creating a date discrepancy. The explicit publication date shown on the feature is the clearest date for the page itself; the differing SAAJ category should not be treated as evidence that the project was completed or awarded in a particular year unless a separate source confirms it.
The strongest documented lesson is therefore specific: Bay View House uses boat-inspired spherical forms and a multi-level, view-driven plan to pursue a sense of living on the water, and SAAJ lists major design awards for it.
