A worn white kitchen table was transformed with a white repaint, a gold geometric stencil and a protective polycrylic coat. The project, published July 16, 2014, shows how careful surface preparation and a nearly dry roller can turn a reusable craft stencil for furniture into a repeating tabletop pattern.

The giveaway mentioned in that post was a $50 stencil promotion hosted by Suburban Bitches in July 2014. It was a historical event, not an open offer today.
Why this table was a candidate for a makeover
Tricia had bought an all-white Crate and Barrel table about a decade before the project appeared. After approximately four years of daily family use by three active children, the tabletop had worn through in large patches and exposed a yellowish surface. A tablecloth temporarily hid the damage, but replacing the table was not the only option. She chose to refinish the top and use a stencil to make the repair an intentional design.

The project is useful because it treats the decorative pattern as the final stage, not as a substitute for repairing the old finish. The account first removes the failing surface, then establishes an even white base, and only afterward adds the metallic motif.
What the original project used
| Supply or tool | Role in the makeover |
|---|---|
| Citristrip Stripping Gel | Removed the existing tabletop finish before repainting. |
| Primer | Prepared the stripped tabletop for the new paint. |
| White semi-gloss paint | Created the base color for the stencil design. |
| Mini-roller | Applied the white base coat. |
| Outside of the Box Craft stencil | Provided the repeating geometric pattern. |
| Painter’s tape | Defined a border and held the stencil in position. |
| Martha Stewart Living Metallic Paint in Golden Pearl | Added the gold pattern over the white base. |
| Dense foam roller | Transferred the metallic paint through the stencil. |
| Folded paper towel | Removed excess paint from the roller before stenciling. |
| Polycrylic | Sealed the completed tabletop. |
These are the materials named in the project account. They document what Tricia used; they are not a controlled comparison or a claim that one brand or finish will suit every table.
Step-by-step: recreating the stenciled tabletop
1. Strip the old surface
The first recorded step was applying Citristrip Stripping Gel to the existing tabletop. Stripping matters here because the old white coating had already failed in broad areas. Painting directly over a damaged, uneven finish would leave the worn patches visible beneath the new design. The source does not provide a measured dwell time, scraping method or test of the stripper, so follow the instructions on the product you choose and confirm that the old coating has been removed before moving on.

2. Prime and repaint the tabletop white
After stripping, Tricia primed the surface and applied white semi-gloss paint with a mini-roller. The white coat is more than a background color: it evens out the visual field so the gold repeat reads clearly. Allow the products you select to reach the recoat condition stated on their labels before placing tape or a stencil on the surface; the original post does not report drying times.
3. Mark the border and secure the stencil
Painter’s tape served two jobs. It masked a border around the tabletop and helped hold the stencil flat while paint was rolled. Establishing the border before the first motif gives the pattern a deliberate edge instead of allowing the repeat to run into the table’s perimeter.
4. Load the dense foam roller sparingly
The post’s central technique is restraint. The publisher summarized it this way: “The key to stenciling is using as little paint as possible.” Tricia rolled the dense foam roller into Martha Stewart Living Metallic Paint in Golden Pearl, then rolled the excess onto a folded paper towel before touching the stencil. Too much paint can bleed beneath the openings or smudge when the stencil is lifted, so a lightly loaded roller is preferable to trying to cover the design in one heavy pass.

5. Apply the first section
With the stencil taped down, roll the metallic paint through its openings using the light load prepared in the previous step. Keep the roller controlled over the stencil rather than flooding it. The source gives the practical reason for this technique—excess paint leads to bleed or smudging—but does not specify a pressure, number of passes or drying interval. Those variables depend on the paint, roller and surface in front of you.
6. Reposition and align the repeat
Once one section was painted, Tricia moved the stencil and aligned it with the finished geometry to continue the pattern across the tabletop. Alignment is the point at which a repeating design succeeds or fails: use the existing motif as the reference for the next placement, maintain the taped border, and check the registration before rolling more paint. The account describes repositioning and extending the repeat; it does not claim a measured tolerance or provide a template for a particular table size.
7. Seal the completed design
After the gold pattern was complete, Tricia finished the tabletop with polycrylic. A clear coat places a protective layer over the painted design, which was especially important for a table used by children. Her stated hope was “in hopes of giving the table top a fighting chance against her children’s impressive destructive abilities.” The post does not include abrasion testing, a measured service life or a comparison with other clear finishes, so the result should be understood as the contributor’s chosen protection rather than a proven durability rating.

How to plan the pattern before painting
Choose a scale that fits the tabletop
The Outside of the Box Craft stencil supplied a geometric repeat for this makeover. Any furniture stencil needs to be considered in relation to the surface: a small repeat requires more repositioning, while a large repeat covers more area per placement. The documented project does not give the stencil’s dimensions or the table’s measurements, so map the intended border and repeat on the actual tabletop before committing paint.
Decide where the border ends
Because painter’s tape was used to mask a border, the design was not simply rolled from edge to edge. Marking that boundary first creates a consistent frame and gives you a registration line for each stencil move. If the tabletop has an irregular edge, use the straightest practical reference line for the first placement and let that line guide subsequent sections.
Keep a repeat record
As you move the stencil, note which part of the motif meets the previously painted section. The source confirms that the stencil was repositioned and aligned to extend the design; recording that sequence is a simple way to avoid rotating or offsetting a repeat accidentally. Do not assume the stencil can be shifted by a fixed distance unless its own markings establish one.

Preventing bleed and smudges
- Use a sparse load. Remove excess metallic paint on a folded paper towel before the roller reaches the stencil.
- Secure the stencil. Painter’s tape was used to keep the pattern in place while rolling.
- Work in sections. Reposition the stencil only after completing the current section, then align the next placement to the existing geometry.
- Protect the base coat. The white semi-gloss layer was applied before any tape or metallic paint, giving the stencil a clean contrast.
- Do not infer a guaranteed result. The original account reports the technique but contains no independent test, failure-rate data or long-term wear measurement.
If paint has visibly collected at the stencil openings, the documented remedy is prevention on the next pass: unload the roller more thoroughly. The source specifically warns that excess paint can bleed or smudge; it does not prescribe a repair method for a dried mistake.
Comparing the project choices
| Decision | Choice documented in the makeover | What that choice does |
|---|---|---|
| Surface preparation | Strip, prime and apply a white semi-gloss coat | Replaces the worn finish and creates an even ground for the pattern. |
| Pattern tool | Outside of the Box Craft stencil | Creates a geometric repeat that can be moved across the tabletop. |
| Paint applicator | Dense foam roller | Applies the metallic color through the stencil openings. |
| Paint-control method | Roll excess onto a folded paper towel | Reduces the amount of paint available to bleed beneath the stencil. |
| Edge control | Painter’s tape | Masks a border and holds the stencil in place. |
| Clear finish | Polycrylic | Seals the painted tabletop after the repeat is finished. |
The evidence supports these as the choices in this one makeover. It does not establish which stencil scale, roller, preparation system or clear finish is best for every tabletop.
What the post does—and does not—establish about durability
The finished table was intended for hard family use, and polycrylic was applied as the protective coat. That is the complete durability evidence in the account. There is no controlled comparison with another clear finish, no laboratory abrasion result, no measured number of meals or years after sealing, and no independent inspection. Treat the project as a practical example of a refinish sequence, not as a guarantee that a particular coating will resist every spill, impact or scratch.
The same limitation applies to cost and timing. Apart from the historical giveaway value, the post does not quantify the project’s material cost or the hours required. Surface condition, table size and the products selected will change both.
The $50 stencil giveaway was historical
The July 16, 2014 post directed readers to Suburban Bitches, which was hosting a $50 stencil giveaway “this week.” The wording describes a short promotional window at that time. No current entry period, deadline, eligibility rules or winner information is established, so the giveaway should not be presented as open or available now.
A practical checklist for your own table
- Inspect the existing finish and decide whether it must be stripped before repainting.
- Gather stripper, primer, white semi-gloss paint, a mini-roller, painter’s tape, a stencil, metallic paint, a dense foam roller, paper towel and a clear finish.
- Strip the old coating, then prime and repaint the tabletop white.
- Mark the border with painter’s tape and secure the stencil.
- Load the foam roller lightly and remove excess paint on folded paper towel.
- Roll the first motif, then move and align the stencil to continue the repeat.
- Apply the clear coat after the pattern is complete, following that product’s label directions.
- Remember that the documented makeover is a contributor’s account, not an independently tested performance claim.
Bottom line for a worn kitchen table
This makeover’s transferable lesson is the order of operations: repair the surface first, establish a clean base, use very little paint through a secured stencil, align each repeat, and add a clear coat at the end. The gold geometric pattern gave an old white table a new focal point without hiding the preparation work that made the decoration possible.
