Dahi Handi is a celebration associated with Krishna Janmashtami in which teams known as Govindas form a human pyramid to reach and break a suspended earthen pot. The pot is traditionally described as holding curd, milk, butter or other dairy products. The custom is especially prominent in Maharashtra.
What is Dahi Handi?
Dahi Handi takes its name from the handi, or pot, traditionally filled with dairy. The Government of India’s cultural account connects the ritual to stories of the young Krishna and his friends reaching pots of dairy products. This is the devotional explanation associated with the festival, rather than a claim of independently established history. How is Dahi Handi celebrated?
Participants called Govindas work together to build a human pyramid beneath a handi suspended above them. Those at the upper levels try to reach and break the pot. The team effort and the climb are central to the public celebration; contemporary coverage describes multi-tiered pyramids at events in Mumbai and nearby areas. Is Dahi Handi part of Janmashtami?
Yes. Dahi Handi is associated with Krishna Janmashtami, the celebration of Krishna’s birth. The pot-breaking ritual recalls the cultural story of Krishna and his companions reaching dairy pots. Maharashtra is a particularly prominent setting for the event, though Janmashtami is observed more broadly.

Safety and the legal context
Dahi Handi involves falls and other hazards, so safety is a material concern for participants, organizers and spectators. Akashvani reported that incidents related to Maharashtra’s 2026 celebrations resulted in three deaths and more than 100 injuries. Its report included separate incidents involving a collapsed brick column, a collapsed iron frame, and a child who drowned after children fell into the Godavari River; it also reported 118 people admitted or treated for injuries in Mumbai. These are figures for the reported 2026 celebrations, not a typical-year rate, and the report does not attribute every injury to a human pyramid. Read Akashvani’s account of the incidents.
A Supreme Court order dated August 1, 2017 reproduced a state government submission describing measures such as helmets, safety belts, cushioning, participant registration and insurance, first aid, ambulance readiness and permissions. The submission included the direction: “Organiser to provide Helmet, Safety belts to Govindas and Cushion layers at the venue of performance.” The Court remitted the matter to the Bombay High Court for fresh consideration.
