Dalsouple rubber tiles were used vertically in several prominent Australian interiors as colourful, impact-resistant wall treatments rather than only as floors. A historical Dalsouple-attributed article reports three vertical colours on the Melbourne Airport Terminal 2 News Bar and a four-colour patchwork on the lower wall of a study area in RMIT’s Swanston Academic Building. The same article lists schools, museums, offices, hospitals and hospitality venues where Dalsouple tiles were used on walls, banisters, ceilings or other detailed surfaces.
Those examples document historical projects, not a guarantee that the same formulation, colours or fixing method can be specified today. Dalsouple Australasia now says the former DalNaturel natural range is no longer available. Current walling decisions therefore require a product-specific technical review, a suitable substrate and installation advice that is actually written for walls.

What the Australian examples show
The vertical applications had two jobs at once: protect vulnerable parts of an interior from knocks and create a deliberate colour or texture feature. The historical article attributes the project descriptions to Dalsouple and should be read as supplier-reported project history, not as independently verified architectural documentation.
Melbourne Airport Terminal 2 News Bar
At the News Bar in Melbourne Airport Terminal 2, the article describes three colours installed as vertical stripes on the walls. It says the surface had to cope with contact from luggage and shoes. That observation is a supplier account of the installation’s use; it is not an independent abrasion or impact test. The example is useful because it shows how a wall finish can be concentrated in a high-contact hospitality and transport setting instead of spread across every wall.

RMIT Swanston Academic Building study area
In a study area at RMIT’s Swanston Academic Building, four colours were arranged in a patchwork on the lower section of the wall. The reported reason for stopping the treatment at a lower level was to take student knocks. The division between a protected lower zone and a different upper finish is a practical pattern for schools, universities and other busy public interiors, provided the current product and adhesive are approved for that use.
Other projects named in the historical article
The article gives a longer list of Australian sites and selected colour or placement details. It does not provide a complete specification, installation date, wall build-up or independent confirmation for every project.

A separate company “about” page also names MONA, Macquarie Bank, Fairfax Media House, Melbourne Grammar School, Qantas, Royal Children’s Hospital, ANZ Bank, MLC, Bankwest Tower, RMIT, CIT, UTS and UTAS among buildings associated with Dalsouple DalNaturel rubber wall base and flooring. That broad list does not establish that every building used rubber on walls, or that all used the same product.
Why put a flooring tile on a wall?
Protection at the impact line
Lower walls, corners, banisters and the edges of counters receive repeated contact from bags, shoes, furniture, trolleys and hands. A resilient tile can create a sacrificial or replaceable surface in those zones. The airport and RMIT accounts are the clearest historical examples: one addresses luggage and shoe contact, while the other concentrates tiles where students were expected to knock the wall.

Colour and texture as architectural material
The historical Dalsouple article reported 80 standard colours and more than 30 textures in 2012. Those figures belong to that historical product description and should not be assumed to describe the current range. Even so, the projects show the design logic: stripes, patchworks, trees and single-colour fields can be laid out as a graphic composition, while texture changes the way light is read across a wall.
Working around difficult geometry
The same article says tiles were used around corners, banisters, tight radii and bull-nose bench tops. These are precisely the locations where a brittle sheet finish or painted surface may require extra protection. The statement is historical and supplier-attributed; a present specification must confirm bend radius, edge treatment, adhesive compatibility and whether the selected tile can be cut or formed as required.

Historical Dalsouple and the current range are not interchangeable
Many Australian examples refer to DalNaturel or to “natural rubber.” Dalsouple Australasia now states that the former DalNaturel natural range is no longer available. Its current product description says Dalsouple flooring is manufactured in France, comes in tile and sheet formats, and is primarily SBR, alongside recycled, marine-grade and outdoor-grade rubber products. “Natural rubber” is therefore a historical or product-specific description, not a safe label for the entire current range.
The distributor states a minimum order quantity of 50 m² as of April 2025. That is a dated supplier policy and may change, so confirm it when requesting samples or a quotation. It can also make a small feature wall commercially different from a large institutional installation: the quantity needed for the design may be less than the quantity that must be ordered.

How to evaluate a walling proposal today
- Define the exposure zone. Mark whether the tiles are protecting a lower wall, a corner, a banister, a counter nose, a curved return or a full feature wall. Record likely contact from luggage, shoes, carts, furniture and cleaning equipment.
- Name the current product, not just the material. Ask for the exact product name, formulation, tile or sheet format, thickness, texture, colour code and production status. Do not specify “DalNaturel” as though it were a current stocked range.
- Request wall-specific technical documents. Confirm approved substrates, primers, adhesives, curing conditions, joint treatment, edge details, maximum service temperature and cleaning instructions. A flooring guide cannot by itself prove that the same assembly is suitable vertically.
- Check the substrate and site conditions. The Dalsouple installation guide calls for professional flexible-rubber-flooring installers and emphasizes substrate preparation and job conditions. For a wall, the project team should additionally verify flatness, moisture, paint or coating compatibility, mechanical stability and the consequences of gravity on the adhesive bond.
- Make a physical sample panel. Test the proposed colour, texture, joint layout, corner detail and cleaning method under the actual lighting. Include a representative edge, internal corner or radius rather than approving only a flat sample.
- Reconcile quantity and procurement. Compare the measured wall area with the distributor’s stated 50 m² minimum order as of April 2025. Include cutting waste, pattern repeats and replacement stock, then reconfirm availability and lead time before the design is frozen.
- Document the installation. Keep the approved product data, batch or colour information, substrate preparation record, adhesive name, installer details, cure time and maintenance instructions with the building handover documents.
Do not confuse DalMagnetic with wall tiles
DalMagnetic is a separate loose-laid tile bonded to a flexible magnetized backing for metallic access floors. Dalsouple reports an SA Water head-office installation in Adelaide in which Hassell designed a 12-colour pattern over six levels and about 900 m². That is a supplier-reported access-floor project, not evidence that a magnetic tile is a wall finish or that the airport and RMIT wall treatments used DalMagnetic.
What is established, and what still needs proof
The strongest evidence for Australian walling consists of the historical Dalsouple-attributed descriptions of Melbourne Airport Terminal 2, RMIT and the other named projects. They establish how the supplier presented the applications: as colour-led, impact-conscious interior treatments using tiles in areas such as lower walls, banisters, corners and curved details.

They do not establish independent fire, acoustic, slip, hygiene, abrasion, impact or longevity performance for walls. No independent building-performance statistic relevant to the walling claim is identified in the available material. Dalsouple’s warranty, product-life expectations and individual longevity anecdotes are company claims and should be cited as such if used.
Architecture & Design published a product-news entry dated 31 October 2011 about Dalsouple natural rubber flooring at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital. The accessible entry confirms the title, date and an iRubber listing but supplies little installation detail, so it should not be used to infer a wall assembly. The historical article also says, “One of the first innovative architects to use Dalsouple as walling was Peter Maddison of Grand Designs Australia Fame.” That is the article’s wording, not a verified quotation from Maddison, and the accessible page does not independently substantiate the characterization.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Is the proposed use genuinely vertical, and is the selected product approved for walling?
- Are the colour, texture and formulation available now, rather than only documented in a historical catalogue?
- Has the designer identified the wall substrate, moisture condition, corners, radii, edges and penetrations?
- Has the adhesive and installation method been confirmed by current technical documentation?
- Does the order meet the stated 50 m² minimum, or has the distributor approved an exception?
- Are cleaning, repair and replacement procedures written into the project handover?
- Are claims about durability, fire, acoustics or service life clearly attributed to the manufacturer rather than presented as independent testing?
- For a named heritage or “iconic” building, is there a project record confirming the exact room and material, rather than only a supplier list?
