Dark interior paint is prominent again: trend coverage says deep colors dominated much of 2025, while burgundy and other deep reds remain visible in 2026 palettes. I understand the appeal—dark walls can create intimacy, contrast and visual depth—but I am still choosing lighter walls. My reasons are practical as much as aesthetic: I want rooms to retain the most daylight possible, to adapt easily when furnishings change and to feel visually open rather than enveloping. That is a personal design decision, not a verdict that dark paint is wrong for every home.
Why dark interior paint is back
Recent design coverage treats dark paint as a major direction rather than a fringe choice. Homes & Gardens reported that dark colors dominated much of 2025 and found designers divided about how long the enthusiasm will last. Some expect rich, deep shades to persist; others see the moment evolving rather than becoming a permanent default. The article also points to a dark rug as a way to add weight and contrast without repainting walls.

Ideal Home’s 2026 color coverage places dark reds and burgundy in the continuing palette. Ruth Mottershead, creative director at Little Greene, describes customers becoming more confident with color and moving toward reds, pinks and purples. That is an expert observation, not a household census. No reliable, directly relevant statistic establishes what percentage of homes currently use dark interior paint, so claims about a mass adoption rate would overstate the evidence.
The practical takeaway is narrower and more useful: you are likely to encounter more confident use of charcoal, ink blue, forest green, aubergine, oxblood and burgundy in current design work, but the direction is still being interpreted. A room does not need to follow a trend simply because the trend is visible.
What designers mean by “dark”
Darkness is not limited to pure black. Paint professionals often discuss light reflectance value (LRV), a measure of how much visible light a color reflects. A lower-LRV paint reflects less light and generally reads deeper; a high-LRV paint reflects more and appears lighter. LRV does not operate in isolation. The color of the incoming light, the direction of the windows, artificial bulbs, sheen and nearby finishes all affect the result.

Its examples include bedrooms, intimate living rooms and studies where comfort, calm or distinctive character is the goal. Those are design judgments and intended atmospheres, not guaranteed psychological effects.
Dark paint can therefore mean a nearly black neutral, a saturated jewel tone or a muted color with a low LRV. Two paints that look equally dark on a phone screen can behave very differently in a north-facing room, a sunlit room or a space lit mainly at night.

Why the look appeals to people
Mood and intimacy
Deep color gives a room a deliberate mood. In a large room or one with a high ceiling, a dark wall can make the space feel cozier and more contained. Sherwin-Williams’ designer feature presents that enveloping quality as a source of comfort for some clients. Bedrooms, reading rooms and evening-focused living spaces are natural candidates because the desired feeling may be retreat rather than maximum visual brightness.
Contrast and emphasis
Dark color can frame a fireplace, built-in shelves, artwork or a specific architectural plane. In an August 2026 feature, The Washington Post reported designers using dark accents to highlight details. A deep backdrop can make pale upholstery, brass, timber or artwork appear more pronounced because the value contrast is stronger.

Because dark colors absorb more light, surfaces can appear visually closer. Sherwin-Williams’ color guidance explains that this can make a very large room feel more intimate. The same effect is precisely what some people dislike: a wall may feel more present, and the room less expansive. It is a contextual effect, not a rule that every dark room will look small.
Why I am not painting my own walls dark
I prefer maximum visual brightness
My baseline preference is for rooms that look bright for as many hours as possible. Light walls do not create daylight, but they reflect more of the available light around a room. That gives me a wider margin when a cloudy day, a shaded window or a weaker lamp changes the atmosphere. I would rather add depth with furniture, textiles and artwork than make the wall itself the dominant source of mood.
I want a flexible backdrop
My furnishings and artwork are not fixed. A lighter neutral lets me change a sofa, rug or collection without having to reconsider whether the wall color still works. Dark paint can be a compelling design anchor, but an anchor also limits the range of combinations that feel intentional. Flexibility matters more to me than a strongly enveloping effect.

I do not want the room’s emotional tone decided by the walls
Designers quoted in The Washington Post’s coverage describe dark colors as emotionally charged and report that some clients react negatively to them. That response is not a defect in the color; it is evidence that color preference is personal. I know I am more comfortable when the walls feel quiet and open, so I do not want a permanent, high-impact backdrop in every main room.
The maintenance margin is smaller
A dark wall can show uneven preparation, roller marks and touch-up differences more readily than a forgiving mid-tone. An older Sherwin-Williams article about black paint specifically warns that drips and drywall dents become conspicuous and recommends an ultra-smooth surface. That advice concerns black paint and is older brand guidance, so it should be treated as a practical caution rather than a universal rule for every dark finish. Even so, the smaller margin for error is another reason I favor lighter walls.
Will dark colors still be on trend in 2026?
The most defensible answer is yes, but with qualifications. Burgundy and deep reds appear in 2026 trend coverage, and designers continue to discuss dark neutrals and saturated shades. At the same time, Homes & Gardens reports disagreement among designers about the trend’s staying power. One designer expects deep, rich colors to remain; another reader may see the movement as a step toward more varied color confidence rather than a permanent dark-wall era.
That distinction matters when making an expensive, time-consuming decision. A trend can be culturally prominent without being right for your lighting, architecture or temperament. Paint the room you want to live in, not the forecast you think you need to obey.
How light changes a dark paint color
Sherwin-Williams’ dark-neutral guidance and Benjamin Moore’s dark-color guidance both support evaluating color in context. A sample viewed online or under a store’s lighting cannot show how the same paint will look beside your flooring, trim and furnishings.

- Window direction: The color and intensity of daylight shift through the day, changing whether a dark paint reads warmer, cooler, flatter or more saturated.
- Artificial light: Bulb color temperature and placement can alter the apparent undertone, especially after sunset.
- Sheen: Glossier surfaces reflect highlights; a very matte finish absorbs more light and can make a dark shade appear flatter.
- Surrounding finishes: Pale ceilings, light floors and reflective metal can keep a dark wall from feeling as heavy, while dark furniture can deepen the effect.
For those reasons, I would never choose a dark color from a digital swatch alone, even if I ultimately decide not to use it.
Will black shrink a room?
Not automatically. The more precise statement is that a dark surface can appear closer, which may make a vast room feel intimate. In a small room, that proximity may read as enveloping, dramatic or cramped depending on the windows, ceiling, trim, furnishings and the viewer’s preference. A dark ceiling, dark walls and low light create a different experience from one dark feature wall with a pale ceiling and strong daylight.
If your goal is to preserve a sense of airiness, light walls are the safer route. If your goal is to reduce the visual scale of an oversized room or create a cocoon-like study, the same optical behavior can be useful.
Test the color before committing
The most practical safeguard is a real sample in the actual room. The Washington Post reports that designer Leon Berry sometimes suggests painting a small section and gauging the homeowner’s response. This is professional advice, not a formal testing protocol, but it addresses the biggest source of disappointment: a color that looked appealing elsewhere behaves differently at home.
- Choose a sample size large enough to read. Use a proper paint sample or a generously sized board rather than relying on a tiny chip.
- Place it on the intended wall. View it beside the floor, trim, curtains and largest furniture pieces. A sample on a different wall can receive different light.
- Check several times. Look in morning daylight, afternoon light and the room’s normal evening illumination. Note whether the undertone changes.
- Assess the surface. A dark finish can reveal dents, patched areas and lap marks. If the wall is not smooth, correct that before judging the final appearance.
- Live with the impression. Ask whether the room feels comfortable at the times you use it, not merely whether the color photographs well.
Preparation matters more with deep colors
Dark paint does not conceal poor drywall work. Dents catch angled light, drips create obvious value changes and inconsistent porosity can produce patchy sheen. The older black-paint guidance from Sherwin-Williams recommends ultra-smooth preparation; for any dark finish, the underlying principle is sound.

- Fill dents and sand repairs until the surface is level.
- Remove dust before priming or painting.
- Use consistent application pressure and maintain a wet edge.
- Keep enough paint from the same mix for future touch-ups; a later match can flash differently even when the color name is identical.
These steps are not reasons to reject dark paint outright. They are the labor cost of making a high-contrast surface look intentional, and they weigh into my preference for a more forgiving backdrop.
Where dark paint makes the most sense
| Space or feature | Why a dark color can work | Question to ask first |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | Supports a quieter, more enclosed atmosphere when that mood is wanted. | Will the room still feel comfortable during daytime tasks? |
| Study or library | Creates visual focus and can reinforce a room intended for concentration. | Is there enough task lighting for reading and video calls? |
| Large living room | Can make high ceilings or broad walls feel more intimate. | Do furniture and flooring provide enough contrast? |
| Architectural feature wall | Draws attention to a fireplace, shelving or artwork without enclosing every wall. | Does the chosen wall have a clean surface and a clear focal point? |
| Small, low-light room | Can feel dramatic and intentional for someone who wants a cocooning effect. | Will the loss of reflected light conflict with how the room is used? |
Ways to get contrast without repainting every wall
If you like the visual weight of dark color but share my reservations, use a reversible element. Homes & Gardens specifically suggests a dark rug to ground a room and add contrast without coating the walls. A rug, upholstered chair, curtain panel, artwork or painted piece of furniture can introduce burgundy, charcoal or deep green while leaving the room’s reflective envelope intact.
A single accent wall is another compromise, provided it has a clear architectural or functional purpose. It reduces the amount of preparation and makes a future change less disruptive than repainting the entire room. The key is to use the dark element deliberately rather than treating it as a token gesture in a room whose other finishes do not support it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you decide to go dark anyway
Start with the room’s intended feeling, then select the color. Sherwin-Williams’ guidance points to bedrooms, intimate living rooms and studies for comfort, calm and character, but the recommendation is conditional on the atmosphere you want. Sample the actual shade, inspect it under changing light and prepare the wall thoroughly. Pairing a dark wall with lighter trim, ceiling, reflective accents or pale textiles can preserve contrast and prevent every surface from merging.
Do not assume a color is neutral simply because it is dark. A charcoal may lean blue, a burgundy may lean brown or purple, and a forest green can shift dramatically under warm bulbs. The undertone will influence every nearby material, so judge the complete combination rather than the paint chip in isolation.
My decision rule
I ask three questions before accepting a dramatic paint trend: Does it improve the way the room functions? Will I still like the atmosphere outside ideal photographs and peak daylight? Can I change the rest of the room without fighting the wall color? Dark paint earns a yes for many people, especially where intimacy and emphasis are the point. For me, lighter walls answer those questions more reliably.
That is why I am leaving the renewed dark-paint movement to rooms and homeowners that genuinely benefit from its depth. I can appreciate the design logic, use a dark rug or smaller accent when I want contrast, and still keep the walls bright, adaptable and emotionally quieter.
