Dashain jamara is young barley or maize grown from seeds sown at Ghatasthapana, the opening day of Dashain. In the account described by the Lumbini Development Trust, elders give the seedlings to younger family members with tika and blessings on Vijaya Dashami. Jamara is the seedling; tika is the mixture applied to the forehead. The Nepal Tourism Board describes Dashain as a time for worship, family visits, tika, and blessings.
What is jamara?
Jamara is the young growth sprouted from seeds for Dashain. A cultural-calendar account from the Lumbini Development Trust names barley or maize and places the sowing at Ghatasthapana. The seedlings are later offered during the festival’s Vijaya Dashami observance.
Dashain is also a festival of worship and family visits. The Nepal Tourism Board describes worship and offerings to Durga, as well as visits to elders to receive tika and blessings. Nepal Tourism Board: Dashain
When is jamara grown and given?
In the Lumbini Development Trust’s account, Ghatasthapana marks the start of the ritual sequence: seeds are sown that day, and elders give the resulting jamara with tika and blessings on Vijaya Dashami. The calendar describes Dashain as continuing until the full moon.

Rank #3
- BARLEY SEED FOR PLANTING – Versatile barley seed for gardeners, homesteads and larger growing areas. Plant as a grain crop, seasonal cover crop, forage crop or garden ground cover.
- EXCELLENT COOL-SEASON COVER CROP – Barley establishes quickly under favorable conditions and provides dense vegetative growth that helps cover exposed garden soil during the cooler growing season.
- GREAT FOR FALL GARDENS – Plant after summer vegetables are harvested to keep garden areas growing rather than leaving soil bare. Barley can be incorporated into a fall cover-crop rotation before next year's garden.
- FORAGE & GRAZING APPLICATIONS – Barley can be grown as forage in appropriate livestock and grazing systems. Management and feeding suitability depend on the animals, growth stage and intended use.
What does jamara signify?
The cited sources establish jamara’s place in the Dashain ritual sequence and its presentation with tika and elders’ blessings. They do not establish one universal symbolic interpretation. Meanings and customs should not be assumed to be identical across Nepali communities or households.
