Davco Tile Adhesives: A Practical Guide to Products, Tile Types and Substrate Compatibility

Davco is a range, not one universal tile adhesive. This guide explains how Ceramaflex, Ultraflex, SMP EVO, Ceramacrete, Powder Mastic, Supamastic and Grey One Pot differ by tile, substrate, exposure and application method.

Davco is a range of tile adhesives, not one universal product. Sika Australia offers cement-based powders and premixed adhesives whose permitted uses vary by tile material, substrate, location, wet-area exposure, tile size and installation method. Choose the exact product from its current product data sheet (PDS), then follow that document for preparation, mixing, coverage, open time and drying.

The guide below explains what each major Davco option is intended to do, where its restrictions matter, and how to avoid treating one product’s compatibility as evidence for another.

Why adhesive selection matters

A tile adhesive transfers loads between the tile and the surface beneath it while accommodating the movement and moisture conditions of the installation. A product that works on an internal plasterboard wall may be unsuitable over concrete, a waterproofing membrane, a pool, an exterior floor or a large porcelain tile. Sika Australia describes tile, substrate, location and installation conditions as the variables that should drive selection, stating that choosing the right adhesive is essential to a long-lasting installation.

Davco product names are therefore not interchangeable specifications. Ceramaflex, Ultraflex, SMP EVO, Ceramacrete, Powder Mastic, Supamastic and Grey One Pot each have their own listed uses and exclusions. The product pages consulted on 13 October 2026 do not replace the live PDS: formulations, packaging and instructions can change, and site conditions influence working and drying times.

Start with the four decisions that determine compatibility

1. Identify the tile material

Record whether the tile is ceramic, porcelain, mosaic, terracotta, slate, quarry tile, natural stone, marble or another material. Also note whether it is translucent, moisture-sensitive, rectified or unusually large. Porcelain has low porosity, while some stones can stain, warp or react to moisture; an adhesive suitable for ordinary ceramic cannot automatically be used for either.

For example, Ceramaflex lists ceramic, porcelain, mosaic, terracotta, slate and quarry tiles. Ultraflex has broad listed tile coverage but specifically excludes translucent tiles and moisture-sensitive stone such as green marble. Ceramacrete is not suitable for natural stone. Supamastic is not suitable for porcelain tiles larger than 200 × 200 mm. Those are product-specific restrictions, not rules for every Davco adhesive.

2. Check the substrate actually being tiled

Describe the surface by material and condition: masonry, concrete, screed, plasterboard or another board, a framed system, an existing tiled surface, or a waterproofing membrane. It must be sound, clean and prepared as the selected PDS requires. A substrate can be structurally adequate yet chemically or mechanically incompatible with a particular adhesive.

Grey One Pot, for instance, lists common board substrates for specified internal residential work but is not suitable over concrete, waterproofing membranes or existing ceramic tiles. Ceramacrete is described for specified rigid substrates; its page says Davelastic is needed for specified flexible framed or submerged applications. Do not infer that either limitation applies to every other product.

3. Define the environment

Separate internal dry rooms from wet areas, continuously damp locations, pools and spas, and exterior walls or floors. Include expected movement, thermal cycling, direct weather and underfloor heating. A product page may list internal and external work yet still require a particular substrate, primer, membrane system or bed thickness.

SMP EVO’s listed applications include pools, spas and underfloor heating, along with premium stone, marble and porcelain. That listing is a reason to investigate SMP EVO’s current PDS, not permission to omit waterproofing design or movement detailing. Ultraflex and Ceramaflex also list interior and exterior applications, subject to their own substrate and installation directions.

4. Check tile size, bed thickness and application method

Large-format and rectified-edge tiles place different demands on coverage and adjustment than small wall tiles. Decide whether the installation needs a thin bed or a thicker bed, and whether a powder that must be mixed is practical or a ready-to-use product is appropriate. Powdered products may require a drill-mounted paddle; premixed products have different handling and drying characteristics.

Davco products at a glance

Product Officially described use Important selection caution
Ceramaflex Flexible thin- or thick-bed cement-based adhesive for internal and external walls and floors; listed for ceramic, porcelain, mosaic, terracotta, slate and quarry tiles. Use the specified substrate list, layer-thickness limit and mixing/application directions, including details for early-aged screeds.
Ultraflex Rubber-modified cement-based wall and floor adhesive for interior and exterior applications, with a broad listed tile and substrate range. Not suitable for translucent tiles or moisture-sensitive stone such as green marble.
SMP EVO Flexible cement-based adhesive for premium stone, marble and porcelain, including large-format work; listed for pools, spas and underfloor heating. Confirm the current PDS for the exact substrate, membrane and wet-area system.
Ceramacrete Cement-based adhesive for specified rigid substrates and listed domestic or light-commercial uses. Not suitable for natural stone; Davelastic is required for specified flexible framed or submerged applications.
Powder Mastic Flexible cement-based adhesive described for large-format and rectified-edge tiles in interior and exterior areas. Verify the particular tile and substrate against its current PDS.
Supamastic Premixed thin-bed wall adhesive for specified internal residential uses, with limited dry-area floor use. Porosity is critical; it is not suitable for porcelain tiles larger than 200 × 200 mm.
Grey One Pot Ready-to-use flexible adhesive for specified internal residential applications and listed common board substrates. Not suitable over concrete, waterproofing membranes, existing ceramic tiles or moisture-sensitive stone.

How to choose between powder and premixed adhesives

Cement-based powders

Ceramaflex, Ultraflex, SMP EVO, Ceramacrete and Powder Mastic are cement-based products. Their selection depends on the tile and substrate combinations expressly listed for that product, as well as the required flexibility, bed depth and exposure. Mixing must follow the PDS exactly; changing the water ratio, substituting an additive or using a different mixing method can change performance.

The Ceramaflex directions specifically call for a drill-mounted mixing paddle and prohibit hand mixing. The page also specifies a maximum layer thickness and a defined sequence for application. Because the numerical thickness and timing limits belong to that product document, read the current PDS rather than relying on a generic rule.

Premixed products

Supamastic and Grey One Pot are supplied ready to use for narrower applications. They can simplify small internal jobs because no powder-and-water batch is required, but premixed does not mean universal. Supamastic has a stated porcelain-size limit and only limited dry-area floor use. Grey One Pot excludes several common surfaces, including concrete and waterproofing membranes, so it is not a general-purpose replacement for a cement-based powder.

Preparation and installation workflow

Use the following workflow as a control checklist. The selected product’s PDS remains the authority for primer, mixing ratio, open time, coverage, trowel, bed thickness and drying.

  1. Confirm the system. Write down the tile type and dimensions, substrate, room or exposure, membrane (if any), movement joints and whether the job is a wall, floor, pool or heated surface. Select a product whose official page and PDS expressly cover that combination.
  2. Inspect and prepare the substrate. Remove dust, laitance, grease, loose material and contamination. Repair defects and ensure the surface is stable, suitably flat and within the product’s moisture and preparation requirements. Prime only when the selected PDS calls for it, using the specified primer and method.
  3. Stage tools and materials. Have the prescribed notched trowel, mixing paddle where required, clean water for powder products, spacers and a way to check coverage. Grey One Pot directions specify a notched trowel held at 60 degrees or more; that angle is an example for Grey One Pot, not a universal setting for every Davco adhesive.
  4. Mix or condition the adhesive. For a powder, measure components accurately and use the specified drill-mounted paddle where directed. Never hand-mix Ceramaflex. For a premixed product, condition and handle it exactly as its PDS states rather than adding water or other materials.
  5. Spread only what can be tiled within the open time. Comb the adhesive in the prescribed direction. Site temperature, humidity, airflow and substrate absorption affect how quickly the surface skins, so do not assume a nominal time will be identical on every job.
  6. Bed each tile fully. Press the tile into the combed adhesive and move it to flatten ridges. Lift a tile periodically to check that the required contact is being achieved, especially on large-format work, floors, exteriors and wet areas. If coverage is inadequate, correct the method while the adhesive is workable.
  7. Observe the product’s waiting and protection periods. Keep the installation protected from traffic, water, vibration and contamination for the period stated in the PDS. Grouting, cleaning and exposing the area too soon can compromise an otherwise suitable adhesive.

Product-specific cautions worth checking before work starts

Ceramaflex

Its listed thin- and thick-bed capability can be useful where the approved substrate and thickness range match the job. The product page includes specific guidance for early-aged screeds, mixing and application. Treat those directions as mandatory details rather than assuming that every flexible cement adhesive tolerates the same screed age or layer depth.

Ultraflex

Its rubber-modified formulation and broad listed range do not override the exclusion for translucent tiles and moisture-sensitive stone. For green marble or another stone with uncertain moisture behaviour, obtain a written compatibility decision before installation.

SMP EVO

The product is positioned for premium stone, marble and porcelain, including large-format work, and its listed applications include pools, spas and underfloor heating. Those demanding environments make substrate, membrane and movement compatibility particularly important. Review the detailed PDS and seek Sika technical advice when the system falls outside a clearly listed assembly.

Ceramacrete

Use it only where the substrate is one of the specified rigid types and the tile is not natural stone. Where the page calls for Davelastic in a flexible framed or submerged application, the additive is part of that system; it is not a reason to improvise an additive in unrelated work.

Powder Mastic

The description highlights large-format and rectified-edge tiles in interior and exterior areas. Confirm the actual substrate, tile dimensions, bed depth and coverage requirements in the current PDS before starting, because the short product description does not establish every permissible combination.

Supamastic

Its premixed, thin-bed format is aimed mainly at specified internal residential walls, with limited dry-area floor use. Check tile porosity and dimensions first; porcelain over 200 × 200 mm is expressly excluded.

Grey One Pot

This ready-to-use adhesive is restricted to listed internal residential applications and board substrates. It must not be used over concrete, waterproofing membranes, existing ceramic tiles or moisture-sensitive stone. Follow the specified notched-trowel technique and allow the stated drying period to account for site conditions.

Common compatibility mistakes and how to prevent them

  • Choosing by brand name alone: “Davco” identifies the range, not a performance class. Compare the exact product page and PDS with the tile, substrate and exposure.
  • Assuming exterior means every exterior surface: An exterior listing still has substrate, thickness, movement and preparation conditions. Verify the complete assembly.
  • Ignoring moisture sensitivity: Natural stone, translucent tile and green marble need product-specific confirmation. Exclusions on Ultraflex, Ceramacrete and Grey One Pot show why a general “stone-safe” assumption is unsafe.
  • Using a premixed wall adhesive on a demanding floor: Supamastic has limited dry-area floor use, while Grey One Pot is described for specified internal residential applications. Neither should be selected for a pool, exterior floor or membrane system without explicit documentation.
  • Spreading too far ahead: Once adhesive skins over, pressing a tile into it may not deliver the intended bond. Work within the product’s open time and adjust the area to site conditions.
  • Skipping coverage checks: A tile that looks seated can still have voids. Lift tiles during installation and change the trowel technique or adhesive coverage method if contact is insufficient.
  • Changing the mix: Extra water, hand mixing where prohibited, or an unapproved additive changes the product. Use only the stated ratio, equipment and additives.

Dust, handling and technical support

Sika Australia’s Ceramacrete and SMP EVO pages claim up to 80% less airborne dust during the mixing phase. The pages do not identify a publication year, and the claim should not be read as two independent studies. Treat dust control as one handling benefit, not as evidence that either product is suitable for a particular tile or substrate.

Use suitable personal protective equipment, ventilation and housekeeping for cement powders and follow the current safety data sheet. Keep bags and containers protected from moisture, and do not use material whose condition or storage history is uncertain. When the installation involves an unlisted substrate, a sensitive stone, a membrane, a pool, a heated floor or an unusual tile size, obtain written guidance from Sika technical support before committing materials.

What to verify on the current PDS

  • Permitted tile materials, dimensions and porosity.
  • Approved substrates, primers, membranes and additives.
  • Interior, exterior, wet-area, submerged and heated-floor scope.
  • Powder-to-water ratio or premixed handling instructions.
  • Required paddle, trowel type, notch and application direction.
  • Maximum bed or layer thickness and coverage target.
  • Open time, adjustment time, drying, grouting and traffic restrictions.
  • Storage, shelf life, safety and cleanup requirements.

That verification is the practical difference between selecting a Davco adhesive by assumption and selecting one for a documented installation system.
