Day Bukh Architects’ documented work spans public, urban and residential design rather than a single building type. Four published projects show how that range is expressed: a foreshore recreation pavilion that joins amenities with public landscape, a flexible senior study centre, and two Sydney houses that use environmental design and careful additions to improve everyday living. Together they offer a useful, selected view of the practice—not a complete inventory of its cultural or housing work.
What Day Bukh Architects’ portfolio covers
The practice profile describes Day Bukh Architects as working across public, urban and residential projects, with an interest in ecological and sustainable buildings suited to the Australian context. The examples documented by ArchiDiaries, Builtworks, The Local Project, ArchDaily and Habitus Living show that philosophy through different kinds of use: community recreation, secondary education and private housing.

The strongest public example, Regatta Foreshore Walk Pavilion, is a recreation setting with cultural and historical significance for its community. It is not a museum, gallery or performing-arts building. Mamre Anglican School’s senior study centre is civic and community-facing, but its purpose is education. The housing examples are Annandale House and Dolls House, each addressing domestic space in a different way.

Regatta Foreshore Walk Pavilion: recreation as civic connection
Completed in 2009, the Regatta Foreshore Walk Pavilion redevelops public recreation space at the southern end of a foreshore reserve in Toronto, New South Wales. ArchiDiaries records a 250 m² gross built-up area. The project is positioned between the lake and the town centre, so its role is larger than that of a standalone amenities block: it helps connect the everyday life of the town with the water’s edge.
A practical programme
The building combines a kiosk and storage area with separate men’s and women’s toilets, changing rooms and showers. These facilities support people using the reserve and lake swimming baths, making the pavilion an operational piece of public infrastructure as well as an architectural object.
Outside the enclosed building, a paved and terraced plaza provides seating and gathering space. A timber boardwalk runs along the foreshore, with access from the boardwalk to the lake swimming baths. The sequence—town, plaza, pavilion, boardwalk and water—makes circulation and social use part of the project’s architecture.
Landscape and cultural meaning
The project description presents the foreshore as a visual, physical and cultural connection for the community. Its significance comes from how recreation, landscape and local history overlap, not from a specialist cultural collection or exhibition programme.
“The design aims to incorporate the unique lakeside environment by extension of the land’s and bush’s inherent physical forms.”

This sentence is attributed to the architect-submitted project description; no individual speaker is named. It explains the intended relationship to the site, while the documented programme explains how visitors actually use it. The available account does not provide an independently measured environmental-performance result, so the pavilion should not be presented as having a quantified energy or water saving.

Builtworks identifies Day Bukh Architects as the designer of Mamre Anglican School’s senior study centre, completed in 2014. The centre supports Years 11 and 12 and contains specialist laboratories, classrooms, staff accommodation and an open learning area. Builtworks reports a 1,000 m² project size on a 40,000 m² site and a $2.7 million project budget. Those figures describe this project as reported; they are not a current tender price or a cost comparison with other schools.
The central communal space
The plan is structured around a communal learning space rather than a corridor serving isolated rooms. Builtworks describes seating, built-in niches, a kitchenette and a circular meeting room within this shared area. Operable doors allow classrooms to open into it, so the centre can support larger school activities as well as ordinary lessons.
This arrangement gives the school several scales of use. A student can work in a more informal niche, a class can occupy a conventional room, and multiple classes can combine in the central area. The design therefore treats circulation space as usable learning space.
Adaptability and environmental measures
Non-load-bearing removable walls are intended to allow future reconfiguration. That approach can extend the useful life of a school building when teaching methods, enrolment patterns or specialist requirements change. It also avoids treating the initial room arrangement as permanent.

Operable glazing supports cross-ventilation. The specification described by Builtworks also includes low-emissivity glass, water-saving fixtures and efficient lighting. Materials were selected with texture, environmental impact, graceful ageing, thermal performance and durability in mind. These are stated design considerations, not a published rating or measured post-occupancy result.
Annandale House: passive comfort, efficient systems and added density
The Local Project describes Annandale House as a Day Bukh Architects residential project that combines passive design with active resource-saving systems. Its documented passive strategies are solar design, evaporative cooling, natural ventilation and insulation. These measures address the way the building gains, moves and retains heat before mechanical equipment is considered.
Passive strategies first
- Solar design: the house is planned in response to the sun, helping manage useful winter warmth and unwanted summer heat.
- Evaporative cooling: cooling is provided through a system that uses water evaporation rather than relying solely on conventional refrigeration.
- Natural ventilation: air movement can be supported by opening the building to breezes when conditions allow.
- Insulation: the envelope is better able to resist unwanted heat transfer.
The source does not quantify how much energy these measures save, identify a formal rating or provide a monitored indoor-temperature study. They should therefore be read as documented design features, not as proof of a particular performance level.
Active systems and material choices
Active measures include LED lighting, energy- and water-saving devices and rainwater collection. The Local Project also notes sustainably sourced and renewable materials. Together, these choices address operational demand and the resources embodied in the building, while the passive measures address comfort through orientation, airflow and the envelope.
A granny flat as an urban decision
A granny flat at the rear increases the number of homes accommodated on the site. This is a small but consequential form of housing density: the project adds an independent dwelling without requiring a larger suburban parcel. The documented coverage does not state the granny flat’s area, cost or occupancy, so its contribution should be understood as additional capacity rather than a quantified density outcome.

Dolls House: a compact addition that reorganises family life
ArchDaily identifies Dolls House as a 2016 Day Bukh Architects project in Sydney with a stated area of 150 m². It is an addition to a semi-detached home, not a new detached house. The intervention creates a bright family home by connecting a new open kitchen and living area to the rear garden. Two bedrooms and a bathroom are located upstairs.
Connecting the interior to the garden
The open kitchen and living area makes the rear garden part of the daily living sequence. Instead of treating the addition as a set of enclosed rooms, the project uses openness and a visual connection to extend the perceived living space. The upstairs bedrooms and bathroom provide a compact second level while leaving the principal shared space connected to the garden.
Where the name came from
Habitus Living reports that Matt Day recalled his daughter seeing the project model and saying, “that looks like a dolls house, it’s beautiful.” The clients adopted the name. This is a reported naming anecdote, not a claim that the project is a literal miniature or that the quotation is an independently verified interview transcript.

Design themes that connect the portfolio
Buildings as links between people and place
At Regatta, the link is literal: the project joins town, lake, reserve and swimming baths. At Dolls House, the rear garden becomes an extension of the family’s living space. Mamre’s communal centre links classrooms and students, while Annandale’s environmental design links domestic comfort to sun, air and water. In each case, the building is described through relationships rather than as an isolated form.

Shared space is programmed, not leftover
The foreshore plaza is furnished public territory, not merely circulation. Mamre’s central area contains seating, niches, a kitchenette and a meeting room, giving it a defined social and educational role. Dolls House places the kitchen and living room together to support family life. These examples suggest that Day Bukh’s shared spaces are designed around activities and movement.
Adaptation over time
Mamre makes future change explicit through removable walls. Annandale adds a second dwelling, allowing a single site to support more than one household. Dolls House extends an existing home instead of replacing it. These are different forms of adaptation—reconfiguration, intensification and addition—but each works with an existing context.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Sustainability as a set of decisions
The projects document a range of lower-impact decisions: cross-ventilation, low-E glazing, insulation, efficient lighting, water-saving fixtures, rainwater collection and renewable or sustainably sourced materials. The evidence does not support a single portfolio-wide performance claim, a rating comparison or a numerical savings estimate. The defensible conclusion is that environmental considerations are integrated into several projects’ planning, envelope, systems and material choices.
What the published evidence does—and does not—establish
These are selected documented projects, not an exhaustive list of every cultural, public or housing building designed by Day Bukh Architects. The available coverage does not establish a current complete portfolio from the practice itself, nor does it provide standardized lifecycle costs, energy monitoring, water-use data or certification results for the four examples.
- The Regatta dimensions and completion year come from an ArchiDiaries project listing.
- The Mamre area, site area and reported budget come from Builtworks’ project details.
- The Annandale environmental strategies and granny flat are described by The Local Project, without quantified savings or a rating.
- The Dolls House area and year are ArchDaily metadata; its programme is described on that project page, while the naming story is reported by Habitus Living.
That distinction matters when comparing buildings. The projects can be compared meaningfully by use, landscape relationship, shared-space planning, adaptability and documented environmental measures. They cannot be ranked fairly on energy efficiency, construction value or lifecycle performance because the sources do not provide equivalent data.
Why these projects matter together
Read as a group, the projects show a practice moving between civic infrastructure, education and housing while keeping attention on how buildings support collective life. Regatta turns a lakeside amenities programme into a public connection. Mamre makes communal learning and future change central to a school building. Annandale combines comfort strategies with an additional dwelling, and Dolls House uses a compact addition to connect family life with a garden.
