December 2024 began on Sunday, December 1, and ended on Tuesday, December 31. Christmas Day fell on Wednesday, December 25. In the U.S. calendar, Christmas Eve was Tuesday, December 24; federal executive departments and agencies also closed that day under a one-time order—not because Christmas Eve is a permanent federal holiday.

U.S. holidays and observances in December 2024
Federal holiday: Christmas Day
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) lists Wednesday, December 25, as Christmas Day in its 2024 federal holiday schedule. OPM explains that federal law establishes the public holidays listed for federal employees. The U.S. Naval Observatory’s date table also gives Christmas Day in 2024 as Wednesday, December 25.
One-time federal closure: Christmas Eve
A separate executive order closed federal executive departments and agencies on Tuesday, December 24, 2024. In a December 20, 2024 budgetary-impact statement, OMB Director Shalanda Young said the order’s benefits included “providing the Federal workforce with an additional holiday the day before Christmas Day.” This was a one-time closure; Christmas Eve was not thereby added to the permanent statutory federal holiday list.

Other dates on the U.S. calendar
Timeanddate lists Christmas Eve on December 24, Christmas Day on December 25, and the first day of Chanukah/Hanukkah on December 26. It also lists the First Sunday of Advent on December 1, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12, and the December Solstice on December 21. These are calendar observances, not a list of federal holidays. Regional listings and religious calendar conventions can differ; the page notes that Jewish holidays begin on or after sunset the day before the displayed date.

OPM’s schedule is the relevant reference for federal employees. Its general rule for most Monday–Friday federal employees addresses holidays that fall on weekends; it does not change Christmas Day’s Wednesday date in December 2024. The federal schedule does not establish what private employers, local governments, or businesses observe. The calendar grid and observances here are U.S.-oriented and should not be treated as a universal or country-specific schedule elsewhere.
