If you do not have a firm, near-term move planned, decorate for the people who live in the house today. Choose colors and finishes that make daily life better, then reserve restraint for choices you know you will soon have to undo or explain to a buyer.
That is a personal judgment, not a promise about sale price. The useful decision is how certain your move is, how soon it could happen, and how difficult a choice would be to change.

“But aren’t you concerned about resale?” sounds like a question about paint, tile, or cabinets. It is really a question about whose preferences should control a home: the current occupants’ or an unknown person who may buy it later.
Those priorities can conflict. A deep green kitchen, black wall, or dramatic wallpaper may be exactly what makes a room feel finished to you. A future buyer may love it, tolerate it, or plan to replace it. A pale, conventional finish may be easier for some visitors to picture themselves living with, but it can also feel like a compromise you have to look at every day. No decorating choice can guarantee a buyer’s reaction.

The practical answer starts with your timeline rather than with a supposedly universally safe color. A possible sale “someday” is different from a signed work contract that ends next year. Treating both situations the same can lead either to years of bland rooms or to a major project that you immediately have to reverse.
What Kristi Linauer argues—and what she does not claim
In her Addicted 2 Decorating essay, “Do You Decorate For Yourself, Or For Some Unknown Future Owner?”, Kristi Linauer argues that a home should reflect its current residents when there is no definite move date. The page displays October 21, 2014, and December 24, 2015. She describes remodeling a 1948 house she bought in 2013 and doing most of the physical work herself.
Her examples are deliberately personal. She chose green kitchen cabinets and black walls, considered white-and-gold mosaic bathroom tile, and discussed bold paint and wallpaper. Questions about resale did not persuade her to abandon those choices. Her stated exception is a household that knows it will leave in a year or two—for example, when a job contract ends. In that case, she understands choosing simpler, more neutral finishes.
“Unless you fit into that category that I spoke about earlier, and have a definitely sell date due to a job contract ending or something like that, decorate your house for you.”
That sentence is the essay’s conclusion, not a finding from a housing study. It does not establish that a color raises or lowers a sale price, shortens time on market, or attracts a measurable share of buyers. The comment thread contains anecdotes and competing opinions, but those comments cannot be treated as representative evidence.

A decision framework for your own rooms
Use four questions before you buy paint or commit to a finish. They turn an abstract resale worry into a choice you can explain.

1. How certain is the move?
Separate a vague possibility from a known departure. People who might move after a promotion, inheritance, or change in family size have a different decision from people whose lease, contract, or planned relocation already has an end date. If the date is unknown, do not sacrifice years of enjoyment for an event that may never occur.
2. How soon could it happen?
Linauer’s exception is a move expected in roughly a year or two. A short horizon makes the time available to enjoy an expensive or labor-intensive choice small. A five- or ten-year possibility, by contrast, leaves many years in which your household experiences the room before a sale is even relevant.
3. How difficult is the choice to change?
Paint is the clearest reversible example in the essay: a wall can be painted again. Cabinets, countertops, tile, and extensive wallpaper involve more planning and physical work, although the essay supplies no cost or labor comparison. The more commitment a choice demands, the more important your timeline and confidence become.
4. What benefit do you receive now?
Write down the everyday benefit instead of treating “liking it” as trivial. A color may make a dark room feel intentional, help a workspace feel separate, or make a kitchen feel like your own. The source favors this present value when a sale is uncertain; it does not quantify it, so you must judge it for your household.

Why paint is a useful test case
Paint makes the conflict visible because color changes a room’s character while remaining comparatively straightforward to alter. Linauer’s phrase “After all, it’s just paint!” captures the emotional permission she gives herself: a strong color is not automatically a permanent mistake.
Walls and ceilings
Use a sample on the actual wall and view it in the room’s daylight and evening light before committing. That is practical risk control, not a claim that one hue is better for resale. If you later decide the color no longer works, the remedy is a new paint decision rather than a prediction about what a buyer might have preferred.
Cabinets and trim
Painting cabinets or trim is still a color decision, but it affects more surfaces and requires more preparation than a single accent wall. Linauer’s green kitchen cabinets illustrate the point: a personal color can define the entire room. Choose it because you want to see it daily, and be honest about the work involved if you might leave soon.
Rooms with a specific purpose
A home office, child’s room, or hobby space can support a more individual palette because the room serves a clear user. The essay mentions bold wallpaper for an office. If that room may need to become a bedroom or selling point shortly, consider whether the treatment can be removed or painted over without turning a deadline into a crisis.

The essay places countertops and bathroom tile alongside paint and wallpaper but does not compare their prices, installation time, durability, or resale returns. That absence matters: do not use the essay to claim that one material is financially safer.

For a countertop, tiled wall, or mosaic floor, ask whether you would still choose it if no buyer ever saw the house. Ask what happens if your taste changes, a repair is needed, or the room’s function changes. White-and-gold mosaic tile may be exactly right for one bathroom and wrong for another; the relevant evidence is your room, your maintenance tolerance, and your horizon—not a universal neutral-versus-bold rule.
Wallpaper sits between paint and a fixed surface. A removable or limited application can preserve more flexibility than covering every room, but the source does not provide installation or removal instructions. If you know you will move soon

- Use samples and a written room plan so a last-minute repaint is less likely.
- Keep distinctive choices to areas where you will receive enough present enjoyment to justify them.
- Do not describe a neutral finish as a guaranteed selling advantage; the source offers no such evidence.
The goal is not to stage a house for an imaginary buyer years early. It is to avoid taking on a major, personal project when you already know your time in the home is brief.

When there is no firm date, postponing every personal choice can become its own cost: you live in rooms designed around a hypothetical stranger. Linauer’s position is to make the home yours. That can include green cabinets, black walls, red or pink paint, or a bold office treatment when those choices genuinely suit you.

Keep flexibility as a design quality, not as a command to stay neutral. You might concentrate a strong color in one room, retain existing surfaces that are still serviceable, or choose a finish that can be changed without rebuilding the room. These are ways to preserve options while still making a present-tense decision.
A room-by-room process
- Write the horizon. Record “no planned move,” “possible in several years,” or “known move in about one or two years.” If the answer is uncertain, say so rather than inventing a date.
- List the daily problem. Identify what the room needs from the change: more energy, a calmer backdrop, a dedicated work zone, or a finished look.
- Classify the commitment. Mark the idea as easily changeable, moderately involved, or difficult to replace. The essay specifically gives paint as the easy-to-change example and treats countertops as more substantial.
- Test the actual room. Sample colors or patterns where lighting, adjoining finishes, and furniture will affect them. Look at the sample at different times of day.
- Set a regret test. Ask, “Would I choose this if I knew I would never sell?” Then ask, “Would I resent doing this if I had to move next year?” The answers expose which priority is driving you.
- Choose and document. Keep the color name, finish, and location in your home records. That helps with touch-ups now and with an orderly handoff later, without requiring you to decorate for a buyer who may never arrive.

Decorate for yourself when your household expects to stay and no definite departure controls the calendar. Use restraint when a move in roughly a year or two is certain and a major choice would deliver little time to enjoy it. Between those extremes, favor personal choices that preserve reasonable flexibility.
The unknown future owner is not a decision-maker who can tell you what to paint today. Your timeline, the commitment of the finish, and the value the room provides now are the information you actually have. Make the choice that fits those facts, and describe any resale effect as uncertain rather than promised.
