Decorate a real Christmas tree in this order: choose a safe location, confirm the tree is fresh, make a new cut on the trunk, secure it in a water-holding stand, inspect and install the lights, add ornaments and optional garland, then finish with a topper. Keep the tree at least three feet from heat sources, keep the trunk’s cut end underwater, switch lights off when you leave or sleep, and remove the tree as soon as it becomes dry.

What to do before the tree enters the house
A live cut tree is both a seasonal decoration and a drying plant. The setup decisions made before the first ornament goes on determine whether it stays stable, hydrated and clear of the most serious fire hazards. Use this preparation sequence before unpacking decorations.
Choose the location first
Measure the ceiling height, including the height of the stand and topper, and check the floor area needed for the tree’s widest branches. Keep the tree and its stand out of doorways, halls and other exits. Leave at least three feet between the tree and fireplaces, radiators, heat vents, candles and other heat sources, as advised by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA).

Look at nearby outlets and cable routes before you commit to a spot. A location that requires a cord across a walkway creates a trip hazard and makes it harder to switch the lights off. Keep the tree where household members can pass without brushing against branches or pulling on the stand.
Check the tree’s freshness
Choose a tree with green needles that do not fall off easily when you gently handle a branch. Pliable branches are another useful freshness sign. The NCTA’s selection guidance explains these checks and other considerations when selecting a cut tree. Avoid a tree that is already shedding heavily or has brittle, snapping branches; it has less moisture reserve for the weeks it will be indoors.
Make the fresh trunk cut and set the stand
Cut the base immediately before mounting
Before putting the tree in its stand, make a fresh, straight cut across the bottom of the trunk. NFPA’s safety sheet says to cut two inches from the base. NCTA care guidance advises removing a disk about one-half inch thick. These are different recommendations from two organizations, not two measurements to add together; follow one of the published fresh-cut approaches and make the cut cleanly across the trunk.
Do not bevel the cut, drill holes in the base or shave the trunk’s outer sides to force it into a stand. The outer wood is part of the tree’s water-conducting structure. If the trunk does not fit, use a larger compatible stand rather than whittling the trunk.
Choose a water-holding stand that fits
Use a stand designed for the trunk’s diameter and with a reservoir large enough to keep the cut surface submerged. NCTA gives a rule of thumb of one quart of stand capacity for each inch of trunk diameter. For example, a trunk measuring three inches across calls for roughly a three-quart reservoir. Measure the trunk and check the stand’s stated capacity before buying or assembling it.
Set the tree upright, center it in the stand and tighten the hardware evenly. Ask another person to steady the tree while you secure it. Confirm that the stand does not rock and that no screw or clamp is biting into a way that could split the trunk.
Add plain tap water promptly
Get the freshly cut trunk into water as soon as possible and keep the cut end submerged. NCTA’s FAQ recommends plain tap water; it does not recommend adding aspirin, bleach, fertilizer or other homemade preservatives. Fill the reservoir to the stand’s marked level, then check it again later the same day because a fresh tree can draw water quickly.

Inspect and plan the lights
Check every string before it goes on the tree
Examine cords, plugs, sockets and bulbs for fraying, cracked insulation, loose connections or other damage. Replace a damaged set instead of taping it and putting it back into service. Use lights listed by a qualified testing laboratory, select sets rated for the intended indoor or outdoor use, and follow the manufacturer’s limit for how many strands may be connected.

NCTA recommends low-heat lights. Never use lit candles on a tree. Electrical problems cause nearly half of home Christmas tree fires, according to NFPA’s 2025 Christmas Tree Safety sheet; that statistic concerns Christmas-tree fires specifically, not every type of holiday fire. NFPA also warns: “A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly.”
Plan the route and controls
Identify the outlet, the direction the cord will travel and the location of any timer or switch before you start wrapping. Keep cords away from doorways and places where they can be pinched or pulled. The National Park Service’s decoration-safety guidance also addresses cord placement and keeping decorations from creating hazards.
How to compare light sets
When choosing between light strings, compare the safety information rather than relying on bulb color or package appearance. Confirm that the set carries a qualified laboratory listing, is marked for indoor or outdoor use as appropriate, has intact insulation and plugs, and states how many strands may be connected. Low-heat sets are the NCTA recommendation for a real tree. A set intended for outdoor use is not automatically a reason to ignore the manufacturer’s instructions indoors; use it only in the locations and configurations on its label.
| Check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Listing | A recognized, qualified testing-laboratory mark |
| Location rating | Indoor or outdoor rating matches where the string will be used |
| Condition | No frayed cord, cracked socket, loose plug or damaged bulb |
| Connections | Stay within the maker’s maximum number of connectable strands |
| Heat | Prefer the low-heat type recommended by NCTA |
Decorate the real tree step by step
The sequence below is a practical styling workflow, not a tested safety standard. The safety requirements are the placement, water, equipment and monitoring rules described above; the order of ornaments and garland is a flexible design choice.
1. Shape the branches
Once the tree is stable and watered, gently separate compressed branches. Work around the tree rather than pulling one limb sharply downward. This reveals open spaces for lights and ornaments and lets you see the tree’s natural outline. If a branch is brittle or breaks with little pressure, remove the broken piece and reconsider whether the tree is already too dry.
2. Install the lights first
Starting near the trunk or the plug end, work upward and around the tree so light is distributed through the depth of the branches rather than only on the outside. Place some sections toward the trunk and some near the tips, keeping the wire supported by branches instead of stretched tightly. Leave the plug and any connector accessible for switching off.
Step back every few feet to look for dark pockets, overloaded areas or a visible line of cord. Keep connectors away from water in the stand and do not exceed the strand limit printed by the manufacturer. When the whole string is in place, turn it on briefly to confirm that bulbs and connections still work.

3. Add large or important ornaments
Hang the largest ornaments first, spacing them around the tree and at different depths. Heavier pieces belong on sturdy inner branches, while lighter pieces can sit near the tips. Keep breakable ornaments away from the floor, high-traffic edges and places accessible to toddlers or pets. If the tree is near a seating area, turn sharp hooks and protruding pieces toward the interior.

4. Balance medium and small ornaments
Fill visual gaps with medium ornaments, then use small pieces to refine the pattern. Rotate the tree as you work so one side does not carry all the color or weight. Repeated colors can create rhythm, while a few contrasting pieces provide focal points; neither approach is a safety requirement or an objectively best style.
5. Add garland or other optional decorations
Place garland after the ornaments if you want it to weave between them, or before ornaments if you prefer a visible continuous line. Use lightweight material and support it at several branches rather than pulling one branch down. Keep any ribbon, metal edge or dangling element away from light sockets and from locations where children or animals can grab it.
6. Secure the topper last
Choose a topper that the upper branches can support without bending the tree or making it unstable. Attach it with a discreet, non-damaging tie if necessary. Recheck the tree’s balance from several angles; a tall topper can make a marginally stable tree lean.
Keep the tree hydrated and safe every day
Check water daily
Look at the stand’s water level every day and refill it before the cut base is exposed. The trunk must remain submerged. A tree can stop taking up water if the cut surface dries, so do not allow the reservoir to run empty and assume a later refill will restore normal uptake.
Keep the stand on a level, protected surface and wipe up spills promptly. Do not add chemicals, sugar, soft drinks or fertilizer; plain tap water is the NCTA recommendation.
Turn lights off when you leave or sleep
Switch the lights off before leaving home and before going to bed. A timer can help you follow that routine, but it does not replace checking cords, plugs and connections. If a bulb, plug or wire becomes hot, discolored or damaged, turn the set off, unplug it and replace it.
Watch for drying
Dry needles that shed easily, brittle branches and a tree that no longer takes up water are warning signs. Maintaining moisture matters because dry evergreen material ignites and burns more readily; the National Institute of Standards and Technology explains how moisture affects holiday-fire behavior. Keep heat sources at least three feet away even when the tree appears fresh.
When and how to remove the tree
Remove the tree after Christmas or as soon as it becomes dry. NFPA and the U.S. Fire Administration advise against leaving a dry tree in the home or garage. Unplug and remove lights and decorations carefully, then have another person help carry the tree out if it is tall or heavy.

Remove every ornament, hook, light and stand before placing the tree in a community program.

The trunk will not fit the stand
Do not shave the trunk’s sides or drill into it. Return to a stand with a larger opening and adequate reservoir capacity. Make a clean fresh cut across the base, then secure the tree without damaging the outer wood.
The water level keeps falling
High initial uptake is normal for a fresh tree, but the reservoir must never run dry. Check the level at least daily and more often during the first day. If the stand leaks, replace or repair it immediately; a leaking stand cannot keep the cut end submerged.

Remove the topper and the heaviest ornaments, loosen and recenter the stand hardware, and retighten it while someone holds the trunk upright. If the stand remains unstable, move the decorations to a compatible stand rather than wedging objects under the base.
A light string is damaged or will not work
Unplug it before inspecting. If insulation is frayed, a socket is cracked or a connection is loose, replace the set. Do not exceed the manufacturer’s connectable-strand limit, and verify that the replacement is listed by a qualified testing laboratory and rated for the location.
Needles are dropping rapidly
Confirm that the cut end is underwater and that the tree is not near a heat source or vent. If the tree is dry and brittle despite a full reservoir, remove it promptly rather than trying to extend its indoor life with additives.
A quick pre-lighting and daily checklist
- The tree is at least three feet from heat sources and does not block an exit.
- The selected tree passed the green-needle and pliable-branch freshness checks.
- A fresh, straight trunk cut was made before the tree entered its stand.
- The stand fits the trunk without shaving its sides and has sufficient reservoir capacity.
- Plain tap water covers the cut base.
- Every light set is undamaged, laboratory-listed, correctly rated and within the manufacturer’s connection limit.
- No candles are on or near the tree.
- Lights can be switched off easily and will be turned off when the home is empty or everyone is asleep.
- Water is checked every day and the tree will be removed when it dries.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much water does a real Christmas tree stand need?
Use a stand with about one quart of reservoir capacity for every inch of trunk diameter. A three-inch trunk therefore calls for roughly a three-quart reservoir. Capacity is only useful if the stand fits the trunk and the cut end stays submerged, so check the water level daily and refill before the base is exposed.

Should I add aspirin, bleach, sugar or fertilizer to the tree water?
No. The National Christmas Tree Association recommends plain tap water and does not recommend aspirin, bleach, fertilizer or homemade preservatives. Keep the stand level, repair leaks promptly and make sure the water reaches the freshly cut base.
Why do safety guides give different fresh-cut measurements?
NFPA says to cut two inches from the base, while NCTA advises removing a disk about one-half inch thick. Those are separate published recommendations, not measurements to combine. Use one clean, straight cut immediately before placing the tree in its stand.
Can I shave the trunk if it is too wide for my stand?
Do not shave the trunk’s outer sides, bevel the base or drill holes. The outer wood helps conduct water. Use a stand with a larger opening and adequate reservoir capacity, then tighten its hardware evenly while another person steadies the tree.

Compare the rating on the package with the place where you will use the lights and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Whichever type you select, look for a qualified testing-laboratory listing, intact cords and plugs, and a stated limit on connectable strands. NCTA recommends low-heat lights for a real tree.
How far should a real Christmas tree be from a fireplace or heat vent?
Keep it at least three feet from fireplaces, radiators, heat vents, candles and similar heat sources. That clearance still applies if the tree looks fresh. Keep the tree out of exits and route cords so they do not cross walkways or become pinched.
When should I take down a real Christmas tree?
Remove it after Christmas or as soon as it becomes dry. Rapid needle shedding, brittle branches or a tree that no longer takes up water are warning signs. NFPA and the U.S. Fire Administration advise not leaving a dry tree in a home or garage.
Can I burn the old tree in a fireplace or wood stove?
No. Do not burn it in a fireplace or wood stove because resin and rapid burning can create dangerous conditions. Instead, check your municipality’s current recycling or collection rules, and remove every ornament, hook, light and stand before placing the tree in a program.
