Delicate Resin Flowers Bloom with an Unusual Dip-Flower Technique

Dip flowers are made by stretching UV dipping resin across closed wire loops, curing the thin films, and assembling them into blooms. Learn how the process differs from dried-flower epoxy art and why resin formulation and careful handling matter.

Dip flowers are made by dipping a closed wire loop into specially formulated UV dipping resin and slowly withdrawing it so a thin film spans the frame. Cure the film, add color, and assemble the petals into a bloom; this is different from embedding dried flowers in epoxy or making molded resin blooms.

The featured tutorial uses small wire loops, UV dipping resin, and a UV lamp. Its process is specific to that resin: it says not to substitute standard UV resin or epoxy. The finished petals are delicate, especially before curing.

What makes these resin flowers unusual?

Many projects called “resin flowers” preserve real flowers by coating or embedding them in solid epoxy. Dip flowers are constructed from wire and a thin resin film instead.

Form fine wire into a fully closed petal loop, dip the looped portion into UV dipping resin, and withdraw it slowly. The resin forms a membrane across the wire frame. The featured tutorial says loops around 2 cm or smaller are easier to film; larger loops can be harder to cover evenly. Treat that size as guidance from this particular tutorial, not a universal limit.

After curing, the separate petals can be colored and assembled around a center. Their narrow wire edges and translucent films let light through, giving the flower an airy, glass-like appearance. Small differences in petal shape can help the finished bloom look more natural.

Make’s 2015 feature on Sakae’s work identifies the materials as wire and liquid synthetic resin and describes the pieces as suitable for hair ornaments, while emphasizing their fragility.

The artist behind the featured work

Make identified the maker as Sakae, a Japanese kanzashi artist. Sakae’s artist profile likewise describes “Dip flower,” using wire and resin to create kanzashi and other finely constructed pieces. Her work is distinguished by its wire-and-resin construction and original coloring technique.

The available sources do not document the precise formula, layering order, or color additives behind Sakae’s coloring method. It would be misleading to present it as a known recipe or to claim that she uses a particular commercial resin.

The profile places Sakae in Tokyo and contains historical information about sales through Yahoo auctions in Japan. That information is not evidence of current availability, international shipping, or active sales.

How dip flowers are made

  1. Shape a closed wire loop. Bend wire into a small petal outline and twist the ends together to seal the loop. An open join can prevent the resin from spanning the frame. The featured tutorial uses loops about 2 cm or smaller, but that measurement is specific to its project.
  2. Dip and withdraw slowly. Dip only the looped portion into UV dipping resin, then draw it out gently and slowly. The tutorial compares the motion to dipping a bubble wand.
  3. Keep the uncured film clear. Support the petal so the membrane does not touch a lamp, foam, another petal, or nearby objects. Before curing, the film can stick or tear if it contacts something.
  4. Cure the base film. Cure it under a UV lamp until it is no longer sticky, following the resin product’s instructions. The tutorial’s curing process is for UV dipping resin only; it explicitly excludes standard UV resin and epoxy as substitutes.
  5. Add color and cure again. The tutorial brushes colored resin onto the cured film and cures it again. Confirm that any coloring material is compatible with the specific product.
  6. Assemble the bloom. Arrange the finished petals closely around a small central support to hide the core. Vary their angles rather than placing them in rigid rows.
  7. Treat real leaves differently. In this tutorial, naturally dehydrated leaves are brushed with UV resin on both sides and cured, rather than dipped. The author reports that an air fryer made leaves crumble and warns that retained moisture may degrade or yellow clear UV resin; these are the author’s process notes, not universal guarantees.

The TOHPE Dip Art Association describes dip art as a wire-and-resin-liquid craft in which dipping creates a resin film. It says the technique originated in the United States in 1969 and was brought to Japan, where flower-focused work became known as American Flower. The association also describes dip-art courses and jewelry.

Dip flowers are not dried flowers in epoxy

Feature Wire-frame dip flower Dried-flower epoxy art Molded resin-bloom effect
What forms the shape? A thin film spanning a wire loop A real dried botanical embedded in or coated with epoxy Resin, inks, and other materials arranged in a mold
Resin type in the cited examples Specialized UV dipping resin; traditional dip art may use other dip liquids Two-part epoxy Epoxy
Basic workflow Dip a wire frame, cure the film, and assemble petals Dry and position botanicals, then seal or pour resin Layer materials in a mold to create a bloom-like effect
Key distinction Artificial petal made as a film on a frame Real plant material preserved in resin A decorative resin effect, not a wire-framed petal

The phrase “resin flowers” can refer to these different crafts, but their materials and processes are not interchangeable. ArtResin’s flower-preservation guidance covers drying real flowers before encapsulation. Its 3D resin flower project uses epoxy and a mold to create a different bloom-like effect.

Materials and tools for a first experiment

Start with a simple flower rather than trying to reproduce a complex artist’s work. For the UV method described in the featured tutorial, gather:

  • Flower-making wire: the structural material for petal loops and supports.
  • Wire tools: cutters and needle-nose pliers can help shape and close the loops.
  • UV dipping resin: use a product intended for dip-flower work. The tutorial explicitly says standard UV resin and epoxy are unsuitable substitutes for its process.
  • Coloring materials and brushes: follow the resin maker’s compatibility guidance and test a sample.
  • UV lamp or torch: use the curing equipment and procedure specified for the chosen resin.
  • Stable support and protected work surface: keep the uncured film from touching nearby objects while it is handled and cured.

A kit may be convenient, but check that it includes resin specifically formulated for wire-frame dipping. A dried-flower epoxy kit does not establish suitability for this technique, and product availability has not been verified by the cited sources.

Safety depends on the resin formulation

“Resin” is a broad category. Ventilation, protective equipment, curing conditions, and disposal depend on the particular product. Read its technical and safety documentation before use, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for ventilation, skin and eye protection, and waste disposal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep liquid resin away from food, children, and animals. Do not pour leftover resin down a sink; follow the product’s disposal guidance. If resin contacts skin or eyes, use the response specified in its safety documentation and seek medical advice when appropriate.

Rules for epoxy flower casting should not be assumed to apply unchanged to UV dipping resin. Follow the selected product’s own directions for handling and curing.

A practical beginner workflow

1. Make one small test petal

Form a small, closed wire loop and test the selected UV dipping resin before making a full flower. A smaller loop is easier to film according to the featured tutorial.

2. Withdraw the loop gently

Dip the looped portion and draw it out slowly. Avoid sudden movement that can disturb the film.

The featured tutorial cures the base film until it is no longer sticky, then brushes on colored resin and cures again. Confirm compatibility rather than assuming any colorant will work.

5. Assemble gradually

Arrange petals closely around a small central support, varying their angles to avoid a rigid, flat appearance.

6. Handle the finished flower gently

Dip flowers are delicate ornamental pieces. Protect them from crushing, abrasion, excessive heat, prolonged moisture, and rough handling.

Common failure modes

The resin does not span the wire

Check that the loop is fully closed and small enough for the selected product and method. Confirm that you are using UV dipping resin, not standard UV resin or epoxy as an unverified substitute.

The membrane tears or sticks during curing

The uncured film may have touched the lamp, foam, another petal, or nearby object. Support it so it remains clear of contact until cured.

The film is uneven

Try a smaller loop and a slower, gentler withdrawal. The featured tutorial identifies loop size and dipping motion as important to forming a complete film.

The color damages or clouds the film

Check compatibility with the selected resin and test the combination on a separate petal before coloring a finished bloom.

A real leaf becomes thick or unevenly coated

For real leaves, the featured tutorial brushes UV resin onto both sides rather than dipping. Its author says dipping can create a layer that is too thick and uneven.

Kanzashi terminology matters

Kanzashi describes a Japanese hair ornament format; it does not identify how the ornament was made.

Traditional tsumami kanzashi is a fabric-based craft. The featured Sakae pieces are instead described as wire-and-resin dip flower art.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A wire-and-resin flower worn as a hair ornament can be called a dip-flower kanzashi. It should not be described as folded-fabric tsumami kanzashi or as a preserved botanical flower.

Where to learn more

The TOHPE Dip Art Association provides terminology and information about dip-art instruction. Specialist artist Kayo Okada’s materials guide lists wires, dip liquids, coatings, and hand tools; its English text is machine translated, so technical details should be interpreted cautiously.

When looking for supplies or instruction, verify that the method is wire-frame dipping and that the resin is appropriate for the specific technique. The UV dipping tutorial’s resin is not interchangeable with standard UV resin or epoxy.

FAQ

Are dip flowers made from real flowers?

No. These dip flowers are artificial constructions made by forming wire loops and coating them with a thin resin film. Dried flowers embedded in epoxy are a different craft.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use ordinary UV resin or epoxy for this dip-flower process?

The featured tutorial says no: its process is for UV dipping resin only and excludes standard UV resin and epoxy. Follow the instructions for the particular product you choose.

How do I keep the film from tearing before it cures?

Keep the uncured membrane from touching the lamp, foam, other petals, or nearby objects. Support it carefully and cure it according to the resin maker’s instructions.

How large should a wire petal loop be?

The featured tutorial uses loops about 2 cm or smaller and says larger loops are harder to film. That is guidance from its method, not a universal standard for every product or design.

Can I dip real leaves the same way as wire petals?

Not in the featured tutorial’s method. It brushes UV resin onto both sides of naturally dehydrated leaves, noting that dipping can make the coating too thick and uneven.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is dip flower the same as tsumami kanzashi?

No. Dip flower describes wire-and-resin construction; tsumami kanzashi is a folded-fabric craft. Kanzashi describes the hair ornament format, so a dip-flower kanzashi need not be tsumami kanzashi.

Dip flowers get their unusual look from a closed wire frame, a thin resin membrane, careful curing, and thoughtful assembly. For the featured UV method, use UV dipping resin rather than standard UV resin or epoxy, keep the uncured film clear of contact, and treat the finished bloom as delicate ornamental art.
