Dental Veneers vs. Inlays: What They Treat and How They Differ

Veneers cover the front of teeth for appearance; inlays restore damage within a tooth. Here’s how their purposes, materials, placement, and trade-offs differ.

A veneer covers the visible front of a tooth to change its appearance. An inlay fits inside a prepared tooth to restore damage that is too extensive for a routine filling but does not require a crown. They treat different problems, so the right choice depends on the tooth’s condition and a dentist’s examination.

What is the difference between a veneer and an inlay?

Feature Veneer Inlay
Main purpose Improve the appearance of a tooth’s visible front surface. Restore damage within a tooth, often when a regular filling is not sufficient.
Where it sits Bonded to the facial, or front, surface. Fitted into the prepared tooth; it does not cover a cusp.
Typical materials Porcelain or composite resin. May be made from gold or porcelain/ceramic.
How it is made Porcelain veneers are custom-made; composite can be shaped directly on the tooth. Often made indirectly, outside the mouth, then fitted to the tooth.
Typical concern Enamel may need to be removed; that makes treatment irreversible. How much tooth structure must be prepared depends on the extent and location of damage.

An inlay is not the same as an onlay or crown. An onlay extends over one or more cusps—the raised points on a tooth—while a crown covers the entire tooth. These restorations differ in how much of the tooth they cover.

What are veneers used for?

A veneer is a thin, custom covering bonded to the front of a tooth. Dentists may use veneers to mask chips, stains, gaps, or teeth with an unwanted shape. They primarily change appearance; they do not necessarily strengthen or repair a tooth. A veneer is not a way to treat every damaged tooth.

Porcelain and composite options

  • Porcelain: Custom-made and tooth-colored, with good resistance to staining and wear. It generally costs more, and preparing the tooth may involve removing enamel. If enamel is removed, the change cannot be reversed.
  • Composite resin: Applied and shaped directly on the tooth in many cases. It may require less enamel removal and fewer visits, and it can be easier to repair. It is less resistant to staining and wear than porcelain.

Neither material is best for every patient. The dentist considers the tooth, appearance goals, bite, oral health, and treatment trade-offs.

What are inlays used for?

An inlay is an indirect restoration: it is made outside the mouth and fitted into a prepared part of the tooth. It may be considered when decay or other damage is too extensive for a simple filling but does not call for a crown. Whether an inlay is suitable depends on the amount and location of remaining tooth structure.

Gold and porcelain or other ceramic materials may be used. Restorative materials have different strengths and limitations: alloys can be durable but may have aesthetic or cost disadvantages; ceramics provide a tooth-colored option but can chip or fracture; and resin composites can be repaired but may wear or discolor. Material choice is specific to the tooth and clinical situation, not a universal ranking.

The ADA describes gold fillings, also called inlays or onlays, as often lasting “20 years or more.” This is general guidance about gold restorations, not a lifespan guarantee for an individual inlay. Longevity depends on the restoration, the tooth, and the patient’s circumstances.

How are veneers and inlays placed?

Veneer placement

  1. Assessment and preparation: The dentist examines the tooth and oral health. For a porcelain veneer, a small amount of enamel is removed to make room for it.
  2. Impression or scan: The dentist records the prepared tooth so a custom porcelain veneer can be made.
  3. Fit and bonding: The dentist checks the veneer’s fit and shape, then bonds it to the tooth. Composite may instead be bonded, sculpted, light-cured, smoothed, and polished directly.

Inlay placement

  1. Prepare and record the tooth: The dentist removes damaged tissue as appropriate and takes an impression or digital scan.
  2. Make the restoration: In a common laboratory workflow, the inlay is made outside the mouth between appointments. Some practices use CAD/CAM equipment to design and make an inlay for placement in one appointment.
  3. Fit and place: The dentist checks the inlay and places it in the prepared tooth.

Visit counts and workflows vary by case and practice. A dentist can explain the expected process for a particular tooth.

How do you decide which treatment to discuss?

The location and purpose of treatment are the first distinctions: veneers are considered for the front appearance of a tooth, while inlays restore damage within a tooth. A dentist can determine whether either is appropriate after assessing the tooth and the patient’s oral health.

  • Ask how much healthy tooth structure would need to be removed and what alternatives are suitable.
  • Discuss material appearance, expected durability, possible repair, and cost. Costs and insurance coverage vary by location and individual plan.
  • Tell the dentist about tooth grinding, bite problems, decay, or gum disease. Decay and gum disease should be treated before veneer placement.
  • Ask how many visits the specific procedure is likely to require and what could change that plan.

What risks and care should you know about?

Veneers can chip, crack, loosen, or wear, and may need repair or replacement. Decay can still develop around or under a veneer. If the bite feels uncomfortable after placement, contact the dentist rather than trying to adjust the restoration yourself.

To care for teeth with restorations, brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth, avoid biting hard objects, and use a sports mouthguard when appropriate. Seek care from a licensed dentist for diagnosis and treatment. The ADA warns that services that remove the dentist from veneer treatment can carry risks, including infection and nerve damage; DIY veneer products are not a substitute for dental care.
