To design a Nintendo Switch skin, start with a template made for your exact console model, place your artwork inside its cut lines, then either make the skin yourself or send the file to a custom-skin service. Standard Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED templates are not interchangeable by default. Check the template’s model coverage before designing or cutting.
Choose a template for your exact Switch model
First identify whether you have a standard Nintendo Switch, a Switch Lite, or a Switch OLED. Some templates cover the original and OLED models; others are specifically for standard Switch V1/V2 hardware. A file for one variant should not be assumed to fit another.
- StyleFlip provides a downloadable design template for its custom skin service.
- DecalGirl offers custom skins for original and OLED Switch models and a free Photoshop template.
- Etsy template listings include seller-created standard Switch V1/V2 bundles and vector cut files for various hardware and accessories. Check each listing’s model coverage, file formats, cut lines, and license terms before buying or using it.
For any template, verify the included parts: console, Joy-Cons, dock, and accessories are not necessarily all covered by one file.

Build the artwork without compromising the cut lines
- Download the model-specific template. Open it in the software required by the file format. StyleFlip asks customers to submit finished artwork as layered PSD, PDF, or AI files so its designers can adjust the manufacturing template.
- Keep guides separate from the design. Put cut lines, holes, and alignment guides on their own layers; do not merge them into the artwork. Keep the original template intact so the outlines remain available for production.
- Place artwork inside the safe area. Keep important text, faces, and other focal details away from joystick and button openings, vents, ports, speakers, and outer edges indicated by the template. These cutouts vary by part, so follow the file rather than relying on a generic Switch measurement.
- Check scale and orientation. Do not resize the template unless its supplier explicitly says to. Print a paper proof or inspect the cut file at 100% scale, then align it with the device before committing vinyl. The sources do not establish one universal Switch-skin dimension.
- Export for the route you chose. For a custom-skin provider, follow its accepted file formats and preserve editable layers where requested. For a personal cutter workflow, use a compatible vector cut file and confirm its settings and material support with the equipment manufacturer.
Choose between making it yourself and ordering a finished skin

DIY offers more control but leaves you responsible for the template’s scale, cut accuracy, materials, and application. Ordering a finished skin reduces production work, though you rely on the provider’s model-specific template and need to confirm it ships to your location.

Use a Cricut or another cutter carefully
Some third-party vector listings advertise SVG, AI, CDR, and DXF cut files for Cricut, Silhouette, laser, or CNC workflows. These are seller-created files, not a universal Nintendo template. Before cutting vinyl, confirm that the file names your exact model, opens correctly in your software, and includes clean paths for the parts you intend to cover. Read its usage license as well.
Make a paper test at full scale and compare each piece with the intended console or accessory. Correct any scale or orientation mismatch before using vinyl. A machine-readable file alone does not establish that a cut will fit; accuracy is specific to the file and workflow.

What to check before ordering or cutting
- Model: standard Switch, Lite, or OLED/original as specified by the template or product page.
- Coverage: whether the package includes the console, Joy-Cons, dock, or accessories you want to decorate.
- File and software: Photoshop or layered PSD for some retailer workflows; vector formats such as SVG, AI, CDR, or DXF for certain cutter files.
- Production responsibility: whether you are buying a digital file or a finished vinyl skin.
- Seller terms: template licensing, current availability, price, and shipping region, which vary and should be checked on the listing.
